While Cassie comes off as a total airhead, she's actually well-versed in math and science |
Cassie was once a world-class figure skater until one world tournament, her mutation surfaced and she accidentally froze over the arena and sent her competition to the hospital with frost bite, abruptly ending the competition. She was banned from figure skating for life. She fled to Paragon City to get help her with her mutation and ended up running into fellow skater and BFF, Alexei Smirnov, and the two decided to become super awesome mutant heroes!

A History on Ice
Cassie was born into a small family in La Tuna Canyon. From a young age, Cassie was taught both Spanish and English. Her mother, Julia, was well known in the area as an expert marksman as a lieutenant in the local police force, capable of wielding two pistols with incredibly accuracy. Cassie had watched her mother at shooting ranges and attempted to mimic her skills with water pistols. Seeing this ambition, Julia began teaching Cassie her techniques.
When Cassie was 8, her parents took her and her brothers out to a local ice skating competition. Cassie watched in amazement as the skaters glided by gracefully. She wanted to do that too! Believing that she could do anything she put her mind to, Cassie begged her parents to let her take figure skating lessons. At first Julia had said no. Cassie had a tendency to not stick with something after she'd succeeded but Henry convinced Julia to give her just one lesson.
Skating was much harder than she'd thought, but Cassie drove on, wanting to be the best. Surprisingly enough, two years passed and she was still skating. It had turned from just a desire to be best to a passion for skating. And to be the best in the world, of course. That would be the Olympics. When Cassie wanted something, she shot for the stars.
And soon they felt reachable.
Her trainer recommended Cassie start partaking in competitions. And so she did. At first she barely placed but soon enough, with that drive and determination, she began placing first. Frequently. Almost every time. She was soon offered an endorsement by a local company to skate and compete. They paid for the lessons in skating and school in return for her doing a few advertisements every so often. At first her parents were hesitant to wrap Cassie into a contract but given Cassie's incessant begging, they soon conceded, telling Cassie she had to keep up with her studies as well, else that would be the end of it all. Cassie was able to skate along side studying academics and marksmanship techniques.
Cassie placed first in several state-wide competitions and nationals, becoming known for her grace and ability to pull off triple lutzes at a young age.
A few years later, Cassie entered her first international tournament where she bumped into a young Alexei Smirnov from Russia. He barely spoke English but somehow, despite also being complete opposites, the two hit it off. The international tournament was much more difficult than nationals and she placed far down on the list. Instead of being bummed out, Cassie wanted to be the best and worked even harder. And she wanted to bump into her strange Russian friend again. And she did. She bumped into Alexei several more times and became close friends.
At 16, Cassie took the GED and received her high school diploma, completely devoting all her time to skating (and a little to marksmanship, because she still wanted to be best at that too). 2009 marked the Olympic tryouts in Spokane, Washington. Cassie trained long and hard for the tournament, putting herself under huge amounts of stress to reach the stars. The short program went phenomenally well, placing her relatively high on the ranks. The long program, however, did not. In the middle of a lutz, she felt this overwhelming amount of cold surge from her body as she fell from the turn and straight into the ground. When she pushed herself to her feet, she saw the entire arena had been encased in ice, all emanating from where she was standing. She was unfortunately disqualified from the competition and banned by the International Skating Union for trying to take an unfair advantage over her competition. Humiliated, Cassie fled from the rink and withdrew from ice skating. She was found several hours later in a nearby hospital when she collapsed in the middle of the street covered in ice.
The hospital performed countless tests and found nothing wrong. With her parents' permission, the doctors performed genetic tests, revealing this may be a mutation. They referred her to a city on the east coast that may be able to help her learn what was going on.
And so Cassie moved across the country in hopes of learning what was going on and how to control it. She would, of course, be the best at manipulating ice too (though it turned out to be just cold in general). To her surprise, she ran into long-time friend Alexei, who was also dealing with a mutation. Cassie suggested (more like forced) that the two of them become a heroic mutant duo! After all, while her skills were rusty, she still had the marksmanship techniques her mother taught her. The plan was brilliant!
Competitive personality
At first glance, Cassie seems like a typical valley girl airhead, speaking with a thick accent, twirling her hair, and talking about fashion. She's very fashion forward, wearing stylish clothes, usually with lots of pink. She talks about shoes, gossips, and checks out girls (and gets hit on by guys all the time).
Cassie has a more intelligent side to her, however. She graduated from high school at 16 and has a fascination with math and science. To help improve her skating, she studied the physics of figure skating, rotation dynamics, and the different effects fabric can have on mobility and speed. Cassie also has a strong understanding of biology, often going into detail about how disgusting and unsanitary sewers are. She also thinks calculus is like totally awesome. Also, growing up in SoCal, Cassie became fluent in both Spanish and English. Given the opportunity, she'll mix both languages together in a sentence, along with the thick valley girl accent. She typically speaks solely English.
Cassie is also extremely competitive. She wants to be the best at everything she puts her mind to. The key to this is, she must be interested in it first. Her primary interests are skating, academics, and heroing. She takes the roll as Triple Lutz Shot quite seriously, defending the innocents and making sure her teammates are safe. She is a fierce competitor but a loyal friend. She would defend the Watchers with her life, if it came down to it.
