When the first message came in, the receptionist didn't think twice about it. They had strange messages left before, it usually proved just to be a wrong number. It wasn't out of the ordinary which is why they followed standard procedure and filed the electornic recording into their databanks.
These days everything was recorded and filed away. Even businesses such as theirs received a range of suspicious calls, from death threats to 'persons of interest'. They complied with the board of director's request to record and maintain a database for every call made in or out of their establishment and office branches.
The initial message was filed away and forgotten. No one thought twice about it.
Not even when the second message came in.
First Message
[beep of an answering machine]
"Daddy? It's me. I'm out! That's good news, right? I want to come visit as soon as I can but I'm kinda busy right now. Soon, okay?"
[sounds of cars going by]
"I'm doing good, Daddy. I'm staying busy. It keeps me safe. Keeps me tied up so I don't get into trouble."
[sounds of chains clinking]
"People aren't mean to me, Daddy. Not anymore. Not like they used to. I think I'm happy. Isn't that a good thing, Daddy?"
[sounds of chains clinking followed by sirens]
"I gotta go, Daddy. I promise I'll come visit you soon, okay? Okay, Daddy? Real soon, I promise."
[voice gets softer with a saddened tone]
"I love you, Daddy."
[sound of handset being clumsily hung on its cradle followed by quiet, muffled sobs seconds before the phone is hung up, followed by the dial tone]
Second Message
[female voice, volume raised to be heard over sirens in the background]
"Daddy? Hi, it's me again. Keeping in touch, like you always say to do. Been keeping real, real busy. Got to see a lot of new places! Even met some people, Daddy!"
[loud explosions heard not too far away]
"The Rikti are invading, Daddy! Isn't that exciting? I get to be good and fend them off! I'm doing good things, Daddy. Good. G-o-o-d! You're proud of me, right Daddy?"
[sound of an almost metallic humming heard, then gunfire and other explosions amidst yelling and battle cries]
"Oh oh! I have to go now, Daddy! I have to go kill things, but .. they're bad alien things, so that's alright, right Daddy? I'll visit you soon. I promise, Daddy. I love you."
[phone handset falls, battles go on in the background until the connection is suddenly terminated by a loud explosion]
