Affiliation
Colleagues
Alexander - Matthias owes a great deal of debt to Alexander for what he did to help him. Even Eroola considers him to be an ally.
Foes
Midnight Squad - Three years have passed since Matthias had taken Eroola back from the Midnighter's. With the influx of Rularuuic weapons, it could be safe to say they don't realize it's him or Eroola.
Group
The Warriors - Known as Polyphemus to them, Axemancer has been associated with for more than four years.
Current membership with The Destroyers of Paragon.
Personality
Matthias Merlock: He always had an optimistic viewpoint to life despite his inability to see, but his longing to see got the better of him. Staunch in the belief of not using technological advances to gain sight, he still wished he was super powered where whatever powers he had could compensate for being blind. His mind was dominate initially, but over the years Eroola has been becoming more of a dominate presence in Matthias mind.
Eroola the Blind: Cold and calculating, his psychic bond to Mattias has slowly allowed him to overtake Matthias consciousness. His bitterness is due to his "secondary" status because he requires a host to do anything.
Character History
Quick Overview
Matthias "Polyphemus" Merlock is a resident of Paragon City, RI. He's different, but not in the meta-human type different. He's blind, but he wasn't born that way. His eyesight deteriorated to being legally blind by the age of four. He remembers just enough to long to being four again, being able see everything. Many years pass and he grew accustom to his lifestyle eventually being contacted by a psychic entity, Eroola the Blind. He was able to give Matthias what he wanted the most sight, but at the cost of his mind, but not knowingly. With no will power to resist such a strong psychic link, Matthias' mind was overtaken by Eroola leading him to become affiliated with the group known as the Warriors to be able to properly wield Eroola. The Warrior's gave Matthias the name of Polyphemus, the cyclops from the epic the Odyssey. An altercation happens when Matthias was arrested for bank robbery and shortly thereafter being released and returned home to his former life of blindness. Less than a year later Eroola reconnected with his mind and got Matthias to take a group of Warriors to break him free from the transport leaving the remaining mystical spoils to the Warriors. Eroola with Matthias fled to the Rogue Isles and made camp with the few pockets of Warriors there. Now known as the Axemancer, Matthias and Eroola are preparing for something, working everyday to greaten their skills. But what is unknown.
Sightless
Zigursky Penitentiary March 15th, 2005, 3:00 PM, Psyche Ward
Matthias was about 26 years at the time, he had just been busted for robbing the Talos Island bank. After his capture he kept babbling about not being able to see once his weapon was taken away from him.
"So your name is Matthias "Polythemus" Merlock?"
"Actually it's Polyphemus."
"I stand corrected, why may I ask how a blind man is capable of robbing a bank, because there is no indication that you've ever possessed any meta-human abilities. But on the tapes it looks as if you know exactly what is happening around you. Mind if you tell me how?"
"The axe."
"The axe allowed you to do this?"
"It wasn't my idea, but he'd thought it would be a good test run on how well I've progressed in combat."
"It was the axe's idea?"
"Yeah, he's some sort of psychic entity that can tap into my mind allowing me to see through his eye on the axe."
"Can he talk to you right now?"
"Actually no, there seems to be something blocking him from entering my mind."
"Good, then we won't be getting any feedback other than your own's?"
"Yes."
"So how did you get introduced to this 'axe' per se?"
"I remember seeing, but I lost that by the age of four. No freak accident, no weird mutation, just deteriorating eyesight. It was a hard transition, because I couldn't play anymore, but as the years went on I got used to it. I graduated from high school and that was pretty much it as far accomplishments went. My parents even asked me if I had wanted to enter myself into high tech programs to see if my sight could be restored. I always refused, but something happened. Images. But they weren't of places I remember when I was a child. At first they were faint, it was if someone or something was trying to get my attention. It was a beach somewhere."
Matthias took a heavy breathe, he had never actually told the whole story to anyone, not even the Warriors he associated himself with after discovering Eroola.
"I found the axe on one of the Talos Island beaches, the exact place I still don't know. The axe called himself Eroola the Blind. I remember I couldn't just waltz around with an axe in broad daylight, when I didn't have a Hero ID much less the ability to wield one. Eroola told me of a group of young men that called themselves the Warriors, he said they would be able to help me learn how to use him. He remembered watching Warriors on the beach practicing their skill with their medieval weapons. So spent many nights out with Eroola to properly wield him, gaining the name Polyphemus from them, because it reminded them of the cyclops from the epic the Odyssey. And now I find myself here because I apparently robbed a bank answering questions."
The psychoanalyst took his notes and left the room leaving Matthias to himself. He thought to himself, "Now what?"
The doctor returned to the room and told Matthias that he was free to go and would send Eroola to M.A.G.I. for further research on what he exactly was.
"You're sure?"
"For one you're a first time offender and if I wasn't I'd have said otherwise, but due to the extreme circumstances beyond your power, you are not a threat upon the city of Paragon. It's that axe you happened to find that seems to be causing the trouble. We'll get someone to call you a cab so you can go home."
"But..." Matthias' voice trails offs, thinking if Eroola would feel betrayed because he was abandoned by him, though not by choice.
Eroola the Blind
Shadow Shard, September 17th, 2004, 12:00 PM, Aloore the Watcher's headquarters
"Your failure is inexcusable," said a booming omnipotent voice.
"B-but, sir, we had no idea that these humans were able to combat against us with ease."
"I do not care, Uthar. I will make an example of you and your men."
"When have my troops ever failed you before? Why must we be punished for something that was unforeseen?"
"Unforeseen, UNFORESEEN? You of all overseer's question that? Very well, unlike Ruladak, I will let you live, but your powers will be but of a fraction of what you knew..." Aloore the Watcher said while grabbing Uthar squeezing the very power out of from his hand creating a small axe in the other. Uthar's mind still screaming heard him continue - " and bind you to these medieval weapons of their world and scatter you in grand spectacle. You are no longer worthy of the name Uthar, you are now Eroola the Blind." Aloore opened portals to Earth Prime depositing him and his men to all parts of the world.
"Let this day be remembered to those that fail, even the greatest of troops can and my punishment will be far worse than this. Good-bye Eroola the Blind."
Word traveled quickly throughout the Shadow Shard, reaching the Chantry. Faathim the Kind took it upon himself to transport any and all willing Rularuu banished this way to be handled by the Midnighter's Club and Paragon's M.A.G.I. to be possibly distributed for a better cause during their former life. Eroola was not so keen on the idea. "There you are Uthar, would you wish to return with me for a shot of redemption," Faathim said quizzically.
"Leave me be Faathim, I am no longer Uthar, but Eroola the Blind. My purpose was served and I'd much rather rot away in the sands of time than to return to another form of servitude to that of someone that defeated me."
"I will head to your request, Eroola, but remember I was never your enemy even when you were Uthar."
Midnighter's Convoy
Talos Island, September 5th, 2005, 4:00 AM, New Thebes Apartments
Matthias was sound asleep in his bed, months have passed since he had been released from his ordeal for his lone offense has adjusted to his life prior to Eroola. Not figuring he would cross paths with this entity again, it faded to the back of his mind.
Wake up, wake up. A familiar voice said. Matthias barely stirred. The voice spoke up a little more. Wake up. Wake up. Matthias rolls over on his bad facing the ceiling answers, "What?"
Good it's about time you realized I was talking to you.
"Dude, I was sleeping it's like 4 o'clock in the morning."
Well you might want to get up and grab some of our Warrior friends, considering I'm being transported to a M.A.G.I. exhibit hall that's supposed to open in a few hours. You do want your sight back don't you?
"Sure, but you think we could not try robbing a bank next time, that really wasn't cool. Everyone thought I was crazy."
Oh, I very well know, I took that liberty when I had the window of opportunity to speak with you. Now hurry up, I'm sure the Warriors would gladly help you because of the other magical spoils in this transport.
Matthias sighs, "Alright."
Fumbling around his room he pieced together his Warriors uniform and headed out to the hill hoping that he'd run into a group of Warriors to help him out, instead found himself in front of three Freakshows. "I don't ever remember Warriors to ever carry canes. Lets see how good you are with it." The Tank Smasher takes a hit at Matthias. It never reaches it point of contact, then a familiar voice said "Polyphemus, what are you doing out here without your weapon?"
"Long story Alexander, I'm glad to hear you guys are here," Matthias said with a sigh of relieve.
After Alexander and his Warrior brothers dispatched the Freakshow, Matthias went into detail as to why he's out and what needs to be done to get Eroola back. "Think you can help me out?"
"Of course, once a Warrior, always a Warrior, I say."
You done now? Argo Highway is the target, they are headed towards Founder's Falls.
"Sorry, he just told me that they're headed towards Argo Highway, know any shortcuts?"
"I can get someone to stall them to buy us some more time," Alexander said grabbing a 2-way radio. "If any of you guys are putzing around near Argo Highway keep an eye out for a convoy, said to be holding some nice mystical artifacts, stall them out if you can, I'll be there shortly."
"Odd, there doesn't seem to be any PPD hanging around this," a Warrior said watching it through his binoculars. A group of twelve Warriors set camp up to blockade the transport. The convoy slows up and stops, various men and women of all sizes get out of their cars. Five minutes pass and the 2-way radio comes back to life. "We've got a problem, a big one, Midnighter's, I repeat Midnighter's."
Kadabra Kill and Sigil had their hands full with Warriors. "How did anyone know about this?" Sigil said firing of an energy blast at a Warrior. "Wish I could tell you," Kadabra Kill said in return. "Everyone, focus your attention on keeping the truck's contents from the Warriors, " Kadabra orders. The Warriors were out numbered, but not by much, once Alexander and the others came they would have the advantage. "HELP IS ON THE WAY, CHARGE!" Alexander yells at the top of his lungs charging forward with twenty-four others and Matthias. Mattias was the only one to see it, but a pink glow blasts through the truck and he could suddenly see again. Quickly, you should be able to fight your way with your cane now. Matthias takes a deep breathe and charges head long into the fray knocking down two Midnighter's in his way. "Need someone to break this lock." "My pleasure," Alexander said with a quick swipe of sword breaking the door open. Matthias grabs Eroola by his handle and falls to the ground in blinding pain. "Polyphemus, you alright in there?" "I am Eroola the Blind, out of my way," Eroola said pushing away a Warrior. Eroola has had enough of this fight taking over Matthias consciousness and laying waste to any Midnighter and splitting vehicle into in his wake. Expending Matthias to his limits he falls unconscious. Being carried away by Alexander to a safe house until he regained his strength. Good, you've awoken. Our time here must be short. We must relocate away from Paragon, away from their watchful eyes.
Away From Watchful Eyes
Talos Island, Siren's Call, Striga Isle, and Nerva Archipelago, September 6th - 9th, 2005
It had been a long five days for Matthias. He and Eroola had gone back to his apartment complex to pack a few necessary things. Taking what little disability money he had stored away he also called his parents to come by and pick up his furniture and store it away until a later time. "I'll tell you when I'm at my new place so you can get my checks sent there, okay." With the help of his fellow Warriors they took a small motor boat out to Siren's Call to make there way to the Rogue Isles. Making a stop at one of the Warrior safe houses in Striga Isle to rest for a day. Eroola was restless with Matthias. We do not have time to take a break and we are not out of sight yet.
"Well, we'll at least stock up on fuel, rations and bolts. No telling what we'll run into out here."
Treacherous waters indeed, finding themselves in the Coralax and Captain Mako's territory. Fortunately Mako never made an appearance, but the constant attacks by Coralax become unnerving and the occasional hiss heard whenever one got hit with a Warrior's crossbow bolt. Finally making it to safer waters off of Nerva Archipelago and landing themselves at Crimson Cove. "This looks like a good enough place, thanks for the help, as always y'know I'll return the favor if you need it," Matthias said with a smile as they pushed off into the waters again. Finding a newsstand and buying a copy of the Rogue Isle Protector to look for a place to live. Here's one close by, I think I'll go take a look. Really don't want to have to sleep in a safe house again.
Nerva Archipelago, September 10th, 2005, 6:00 PM, Crimson Cove
The landlady's keys rattled as she walled down to the hallway to unlock the door, "It's not much but it's a nice place for a single man like yourself. Here's your key."
"Thanks."
She closes the door behind her leaving Matthias standing alone in the apartment room hallway with his bags, "At least it's already furbished.. So why did we leave Paragon?"
Quite simple really. You see there is a minimal presence of Rularuu here, and we shouldn't be getting any M.A.G.I. or Midnighter visits since they wouldn't dare touch foot on Recluse's lawless isles, the Rogue Isles. And it's all the better to train, survival of the fittest rules here.
"More training? For what?"
You'll know in due time. I have some unfinished business and I need you at peak condition so we can be ready to strike.
Matthias sighed, "Okay, whatever. I'm going to get some sleep, It's been a long week."

Creator Notes and Trivia
- Typhlotic was originally only made for two reasons. First making a brute using the Super Reflexes power set, and secondly using the new weapon customization of the Battle Axe specifically for the Rularuu set.
- Typhlotic influences come from Daredevil, Venom, the Odyssey, and the Shadow Shard and Warrior canon of City of Heroes.
- Typhlotic's axe is known as Eroola the Blind. Eroola is merely Aloore the Watcher's name backwards.
- Typhlotic was originally known as Axemancer, I never liked the name, and really wanted Polyphemus, but could never get a hold of the owner of the name.
- Unofficial Theme Song: "Nothing Going to Stand in Our Way" - Kick Axe
