My family was one of the first to settle in this new land, fleeing Inquisitors in Portugal. From a small carrack, the family created an empire of fishing and whaling vessels, docks, warehouses, shipyards - yes, the city has been very good to us. Our small house in Salamanca grew into a vast, sprawling estate. An estate that held secrets - dark secrets. I never learned of my peculiar legacy until later in life...my father died when I was still a child, my mother when I was born. I was raised by servants. Eventually, I learned of our dark secret. Since time immemorial, our family has held a relic known as the masque of shadows. This talisman, combined with the proper training, allowed the holder to summon the powers of shadow, of darkness, death and madness. This is why the family fled Portugal. This is why we grew so powerful, so wealthy.
Perhaps it is because my father died before he could initiate me into becoming a Slave of Shadows. I don't know - and likely never will. I must make amends for the sins of my forefathers. I have spent long hours learning to master the powers of the Masque and of my blood. I shall use the powers of darkness against the Dark, I shall be that which evil fears in the shadows. I am the Lord of Shadows.
