History
Valeria Messalina lived a life of luxury with her husband, Emperor Claudius. Despite him being 30 years older, she seemed content, and the people were well taken with her. She was known to socialize with the subjects, especially the influential upper class and Senate members. One day, she met Gaius Silius, a very handsome man, and a brilliant military leader, whom she appointed head of her personal guard. One day on a journey to Ostia, Claudius's guards turned on him. Valeria was called upon by the Senate to lead the people. She married Gaius, who would not betray them, she said. Many people were suspicious of the situation, but due to her control of the army, none dared challenge her. But the guards had failed in their plot to kill Claudius, who returned, and told the tale. He ordered Valeria to be beheaded, but Gaius helped her escape, though was killed himself. She heard of the land of Cimerora, which was in the middle of a civil war, where Romulus Augustus and his followers were trying to overthrow Lord Imperius, and decided perhaps that could be a good place to start fresh. Her ways with people would certainly allow her to quickly rise into a position of prominence, just as it had in Rome.
Arrival in Cimerora
However, she ran into a snag she had not calculated... Caesar Saladus, the architect who designed and overseer of the construction of much of the Emperor's Palace in Rome was in Cimerora, working for the Imperius Legionari. Of course, he recognized her immediately, and having the knowledge of the house of Rome as he did, she knew he was a threat to exposing her whereabouts. For her own security, she could not let him live. She played the friend though, since she knew he was unaware of the circumstances which had befallen Rome. He showed her about the palace, and she took care to question in great detail, to get in depth knowledge of his workings. After learning all she could from him, including leaders and prominent members of the Legion, she drove a dagger into the back of his skull. After disposing of the body and cleaning up the mess, she forged a note from Ceasar to General Augustus about having to leave for Rome immediately, but that Valeria had come to be his replacement. Saladus had gained much respect among the Legionari, so they accepted her without question, and as she took over construction of the Legion Palace, her fame spread like fire, and before long, Saladus was all but forgotten.
Disappearance
One day, Valeria seemed to vanish though, without word or warning. For months, her whereabouts were unknown. Some feared the worst, and in time, talk of finding a new architect to take her place was suggested. But General Augustus refused to abandon hope. Finally, after being missing for over half a year, she returned. Valeria, by way of Ouroboros, had made an emergency trip to ancient Praetoria, hundreds of years before Emperor Cole, to a time when Catonius Justus was captain of the Praetorian Guard. Her claim was that she was made aware of a plot to have her ancestors assassinated, which of course would drastically affect her future. The truth is that Justus knew of her promiscuous behavior, and was preparing to travel to Rome and alert her husband, Emperor Claudius. Had Claudius known of her infedelity, the coup she later initiated would have surely failed, for he would have known to not trust Imperial Freedmen. The rest of her tale is true however, that she was captured by Justus's guards while sneaking through the palace. Thankfully, they mistakenly took her as a mere thief, and she was imprisoned awaiting trial, so word never got to Justus. She seduced the prison guard and killed him, snuck into the Captain's quarters while he was away and hid until his return, where she then drove a dagger into his chest while he slept. Her task accomplished, she escaped and was long gone before anyone was the wiser.
Return and Reform
Returning to her role as architect, she began fortifying the ranks of the Legionari. Traveling to Paragon City, she found many people who agreed to fight for their cause, having also been warned by the Menders of Ouroboros the dangers that Romulus posed, even to a modern civilization. Her, and the other native Romans trained the modern heroes in the ways of ancient combat, outfitting them with proper armor to blend in to the society. Together, they have grown into a formidable force that Romulus and his traitorous followers have come to fear. Fighting for a genuine cause has seemed to been having a gradual affect on Valeria though, as she has personally experienced a trust and loyalty among her comrades that she had never really experienced before. Having lived most her live seducing and coercing leaders to get what she wanted, actually having people be loyal to her of their own volition was new to her. Seeing how they followed and supported her seemed to soften her, wearing down on the selfish nature that had long driven her course. She found herself caring for others for possibly the first time in her life. Only time will tell how lasting this change will be.
