Affilitations

Matthew Larson is loyal to the Circle of Dawn and to his own redemption. His compassion tends to the silent and unnoticed.

Personality

Matthew Larson is reclusive and quiet. His rage is tightly controlled, his expression often pensive, and he tends to keep company only with the Wraith of Anguish and Seth Peterson. He is incredibly competent with Kithar technology, and seems to prefer its presence to most intelligent beings.

His alternate personality, Thunder is best described as "savage". Ruthless, bitter, and hateful, he possesses no grace to his person - indeed, this savagery often leaves one asking why the Circle of Dawn is willing to run the risk of allowing that personality to get loose. He displays, on his best days, a sociopathy to rival the worst of serial killers. On his worst, he takes pleasure in simply inflicting pain on others, without remorse or regret, wantonly savage in casual cruelty. The method by which this personality is brought forth is currently unknown; when it is dominant, the Matthew personality is able to regain control during the week before and after the Christian celebrated holidays of Easter and Christmas.

Thunder's arrest record includes charges of rape, murder, and assault. These charges and their corresponding sentences have been suspended as long as Thunder remains a registered hero under the aegis of the Circle of Dawn.

History

Matthew Larson's psyche snapped in two when his powers manifested on his sixteenth birthday. The vicious personality given the name Thunder took control, then, unbeknownst to all parties involved. In order to attempt to placate him, an unknown source installed certain implants that could theoretically dampen his powers - these implants were then damaged, permanently suppressing the soma transference aspect of his powers, but enhancing the electrical control. His whims became more vicious; his parents attempted a Catholic exorcism upon him. This was mostly ineffective.

Thunder was incarcerated in 2001 for the crimes of rape, murder, and assault, sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. For some reason, the court records from the case are sealed, and no attempt has been made to reopen them. During the Big Zig Breakout of 2005, Thunder escaped with the Arachnos assault team, reclaiming his powersuit (See equipment section) and fleeing to the Isles. Since then, there was been little information on him found, other than his close association with the Wraith of Anguish.

The Wraith, however, being a young girl instead of a vicious murderer, developed something akin to Stockholm Syndrome, which was reciprocated by the part of Thunder that was locked away by his own viciousness. This relationship ultimately culminated in the Thunder personality losing control to Matthew - then being - theoretically - destroyed permanently.

Powers

Matthew possesses one interconnected genetic mutation - the power to sacrifice of his spirit to heal others, and the power to wield the spark of intelligence to attack his opponents. His powersuit acts as both focus and armor, allowing him to wield his powers efficiently; unlike Seth, however, Matthew is not reliant upon his armor to be effective in combat.

Electrical Control

Matthew possesses exceedingly fine control over his synaptic impulses, able to, in a limited fashion, infuse his body with electricity both to unleash it on impact (or use his body as a tesla coil in order to strike enemies) and to protect himself from harm. His synaptic control allows him to fool telepaths, resist mental invasion, and insulate himself against pain and cold and heat by modifying his body's reaction to each. In melee, Matthew's combat style is fast and vicious, using a rain of fast, effective blows instead of using his electricity to torture his enemies into submission as Thunder does.

Life Force Transfer

Found during standard genetic testing at Zigursky, Thunder possesses the ability to, via skin-to-skin contact, absorb the pain of others, replacing it with his own life energy. This power has been suppressed by a series of implants of Kithar origin, presumably the same source as his powersuit. He may consciously lower this suppression, but this takes too long to be effective in any combat situation. It is theorized that his ability to regenerate any wound or broken bone cleanly is part of this power.

When the Matthew personality is dominant, a dissonance between pain and pleasure is noted - Matthew seems to feel no pain, instead reveling in it. The connection between this power and his life force transfer is unknown.

Matthew's Powersuit

Matthew's powersuit is of the same make as Gentle Guardian's, though slightly different models. They both allow flight, they both allow them to focus electricity (though in different ways), and they both have similar telltale designs.

There are, of course, also differences. Thunder's powersuit is reinforced for protracted melee combat, lacks biofeedback buffers, and seems pristine new, working flawlessly in the midst of heavy combat. Guardian's powersuit is lightweight and balanced for maneuverability, lacks shield buffers, and is prone to crippling malfunctions, sometimes even requiring field repairs - Matthew's powersuit remains in pristine condition thanks to its disuse.

Rage

Thunder's rage often seems supernatural, allowing him to overload his suit's combat functions in order to cause devastating amounts of damage in melee. He revels in inflicting pain, and a victim that does not die enrages him, allowing him to inflict more and more. Matthew's rage is nonexistent - his fervor grows from pleasure, the willingness to suffer sweet pain in order to protect others letting him throw himself into the fight with ever increasing zeal.
