Powers
The Skin: That's really the best way to describe it. Shelly can grow an extra layer of dermis that is as tough as Kevlar, with the flexibility of normal human skin. On top of that, it has the ability to draw on dark energies, possibly even the Netherworld itself, to create defensive fields around her person, and protect her mind from psionic assault. The final, most puzzling property of the skin, is that it nourishes Shelly while it's extended. She doesn't need to sleep, eat, or drink. It may even have a side effect that locks her body in time, not aging while active. The applications possible for a dedicated college student are endless.
Increased physical strength: A side effect of her mutation is an ever present increase in physical strength. Regardless of whether or not the skin is active, she is considerably stronger than your average human.

Weakness and Limitations
Molting: While the skin is an enormous boon on Ms. Pierce, activating and deactivating are a whole other story. It grows in such a way, that Shelly needs to be entirely nude, to prevent clothing and other things close to her skin from literally melding in. She can wear clothing before and after, but not during it's formation. To deactivate it, she needs to physically shed the layer, like a reptile. It comes off easy enough, but given the prior issue of nudity during the growing process, it's something she prefers to do in private. While both processes are quick, they are involved and require concentration to perform.
