((I've done quite a few pages in the past with well developed imagery much like this one; however, I'm trying something a little new with it. This profile is dedicated to see if I can indeed create a complete character story and background using images I've made or found specifically for this purpose somewhere in the vast space of the internet. Please do enjoy, I hope this will be a work of art for many to take pleasure in reading. Thanks for visiting! Sincerely, The guy behind Volkarios))

History

Ahren Ulbrecht is only a human; no mutations, no technology or superhuman genius, no supernatural abilities or toxic vats of nuclear waste.

As a Child...

He was born in Kassal Germany to a wealthy family of four, including himself. His life was no different than most others, two kind and loving parents and an older brother who were always there to look out for him. Ahren's father, Aleric Ulbrecht, was a doctor of archaeology and led a secret society dedicated to the protection and confinement of found magical artifacts. It didn't take too long for those in search of power to learn of the secret society and the treasures that it contained.

One night in the fall of 1991, October 28th to be precise, a militia of hooded men attacked the family residence in search for rumored artifacts of power. Dazed and confused, Ahren fled into a nearby field with his older brother and mother while his father defended their home with his life. Suddenly, he was knocked unconscious by accidentally falling into a deep river bed hidden in the tall weeds of the field. He came-to early the next morning to find that his home was nothing but ash, and his entire family was gone... there was no one left... but him; a useless 8 year old boy with nothing.

Upon returning to his burned and desecrated home, feelings of sorrow and loneliness began to quickly seep into his heart and soul. There were no sirens, no sign of help from the outside world. Days went by that seemed like years to the small boy hiding in the ruins of his home and the bodies of his loved ones. Seven days passed, still no one came. The sorrow that has left him helpless began to change to hatred; loneliness began to transform into an insatiable need for power.

In a sudden rush of fury, Ahren sprang up and ran to his fathers vault that had been so thoroughly pillaged. One item remained under planks of broken and fire-scared wood and rubble, a single gauntlet with a deep blue hue. This was all he needed to gain just a small fraction of power, one step at a time. Ironically, and unbeknown to Ahren, this single metallic glove was one of the most powerful and dangerous artifacts that his father had been keeping from the world, and the hooded-men passed it up.

As Ahren slowly placed the over-sized gauntlet over his small, bony arm, it suddenly shrank to his exact size. Immediately he lost consciousness to awake in a world of nothing but blackness on all sides. In the distance a woman cautiously approached Ahren emanating with such ridiculously vast power, that even a mere eight-year-old human boy could sense it. She spake in a heavy indistinguishable accent, calling him by name and introducing herself as Lady Fulgora ((mature-ish image)), the most mighty goddess of lightning. The conversation between the two is considered to be very sacred to Ahren. She spoke of his divine role, and that accomplishing the tasks in his life - whatever he may choose them to be - will always take him further from society and lawfulness no matter how moral and just his actions may be. That is his curse, to accomplish his goals he must always preform tasks that he considers to be the most offensive of all. But they must be done...

As he regained his vision of his physical surroundings, he quickly noticed that the gauntlet was gone. Instead, his hand and forearm were left discolored, shriveled, and more gaunt than before; much like a raisin or prune.

Thus his journey began.

The Search for Power

And just like that Ahren became an orphan, an orphan with a deep secret and a terrifying hand. His days in the German orphanage were not ones of excitement or intrigue, many days he just sat pondering on where the gauntlet had gone and why his arm looked so terrible. Once rumors of the mark left by the gauntlet began to spread about the orphanage, Ahren became considerably popular with the community of children. He was labeled as a freak and that he brought bad luck to everyone he touched. Already his life of persecution had begun.

About three months after entering the orphanage, a retired Mu Guardian living in peace in Germany, heard the news about the boy's home and immediately knew who the red-hooded men where. He was a good and peace loving man, and the news of the Ahren's misfortune made him feel more guilty than ever. To free himself of his guilt, he took Ahren in as a son and eventually became his mentor. He taught Ahren that the gauntlet was not gone, but absorbed. He taught him how to control the great power that Fulgora left with him, how to use it for good and to protect. For once in a long time, Ahren felt peaceful again.

For eight years they lived together as father and son, but this peace didn't last forever. As more and more of Ahren's power began to surface with his experience, other magically in-tune individuals began to notice. In particular, a traveling scientist that had been possessed by the Circle of Thorns returned home without knowing the evil that lay within his mind and soul. Within that very same week, over fifty Circle of Thorns guardians and mages stormed the small country home of Ahren and his mentor. Being completely overrun, they mercilessly murdered Ahren's new-found father and imprisoned Ahren, now sixteen years old, deep within Oranbega to study the source of his power and how they might obtain it.

Day-in and day-out they tortured him with curses, many times they attempted to possess him and control him, but the power of Fulgora would not allow them to penetrate his mind. Instead, they imprisoned him in a crystal cell for years, only barely surviving by eating the scraps from the hordeling's meals and sucking on a drip of water that trickled down the side of his cell wall. Losing all track of time, Ahren lost himself, insanity tearing away at his insides. When his mind finally began to bend and will to collapse, he was caught up into another vision. This one however, was much different than before. Not only had his vision been removed, but his entire body was physically moved. He found himself surrounded in light for a few moments, then suddenly thrown briskly onto a the dusty ground at the base of a great pyramid.

He wasn't sure where he was, why, or how he got there, but he didn't care. He was free! He could smell clean air again and walk upright under the vast sky! Minutes turned to hours, and Ahren explored this new land learning that he had somehow arrived in Egypt and that his prized gauntlet of Fulgora was gone. Hours turned to days, and he realized that he did not know the language or what to do, but he found a job and a place to stay. As the days rolled on and turned into weeks, Ahren realized that he was not only in Egypt, but ancient Egypt. After months passed, he began to learn their language and their ways. His life here was that of a peasant, but he learned about many new magics and was fortunate enough to read ancient texts that could no possibly exist where he was from.

Ahren gained a new name to the natives, they called him "Nuru", meaning "Born of the Day". Years began to fly by and he began to grow very old. He became bedridden as sickness coupled with age began to affect his health. Then finally one night as he began to fall asleep, he could feel the touch of death at his door step. Accepting its embrace, he closed his eyes to sleep. In his dream he had a vision of an Egyptian God ruling over great plains and a kingdom of obelisks. He turned to Ahren, pointing at him through blue swirls of magic, and said simply this in a deep roaring voice that shook the very earth:

"You have now gained great wisdom and are of sufficient power. To you, my son, I commend my most prized mantle."

And with those words, once again he was surrounded by light and shortly after, swiftly thrown onto a hard cold floor. As he regained his composure, he recognized the all-too familiar surroundings. He was back in the cell deep within Oranbega, the Circle of Thorns hideout. But he was no longer the old man he had grown to be, he was back where he started as though not a moment had past since he left. In the corner of the cell lay a wadded up piece of cloth, covered in dust. With nearly 100 years of experience, Ahren immediately understood the importance of the mantle that he had been using as a pillow all that time while imprisoned. He placed the grungy mantle over his head and it immediately transformed into a beautiful tapestry-design with a flowing cape and hood. Quickly the power of the mysterious Egyptian God began to fill him to his utmost capacity. With his great experience and his new-found power, he destroyed the cell wall and blasted his foes with the might of Fulgora's lightning until he emerged under a cloud-covered sky somewhere in Nerva Archipelago.

Equipment

Ahren has an insatiable desire for arcane relics and runes. The following subsections list and explain known artifacts that he currently uses.

Gauntlet of Fulgora

Gauntlet of Fulgora.jpg

The Gauntlet of Fulgora is known to have been made in ancient Rome during the reign of Ancus Marcius between 642BC and 600BC. During this time period the holy priests of Rome were established. With that great movement, many powerful artifacts were created, using long lost magic, as a display of Rome's power to the rest of the world.

According to legend:

Fulgora, the Goddess of lightning, commissioned the gods to make the gauntlets for her loyal priest as a sign of the priests unhindered dedication and to display her unparalleled power of lightning as a beacon for the Holy Empire of Rome. Once the original owner of the gauntlets passed away, the Goddess Fulgora reclaimed the gauntlets and returned their godly power to the heavens, where they belong.

At least, that's how legend tells it. However, In 1965, during an archaeological dig in Sicily, Ahren's grandfather found one of the gauntlets of Fulgora and immediately knew what it was from ancient paintings and writings. To prevent any miss use of such great power, he hid it in the vaults of the secret society's headquarters where it remained, waiting for that fateful day that someone would come and claim its power.

Currently the location of the other gauntlet is not known. According to Ahren, only one of the gauntlets were retrieved by Fulgora. The one that was retrieved was pure and sanctified, while the other had absorbed lethal doses of corruption and evil. The Goddess Fulgora would not have anything to do with the soiled gauntlet. So instead, she left it on earth for selfish and evil humans to fight over it as an "artifact of power".

Mantle of Septu

Mantle of Septu.jpg

The Mantle of Septu originates from Egypt. It was found in the early 1900's in an Egyptian tomb and was later put on display in the Paragon City Museum of Ancient History. It was never thought to be anything of any magical importance until the Circle of Thorns were able to detect it and attempted to forcibly steal it from the museum. Their fist attempt to rob the museum was thwarted by a no-name hero called Malcortic; however, their second attempt two weeks later was successful. For More information regarding how Volkarios obtained the Mantle of Septu from the Circle of Thorns, refer to the history section.

Volkarios named this artifact after entering a contract with its owner: an Egyptian demi-god of protection and defense, Septu. The mantle provides protection from physical and magical damage, as well as death. Defeat is possible, but as soon as the user of the mantle "dies", he is immediately returned to life via the power of Septu ((hospital teleportation devices)). It does not protect against aging. The power of Septu converts a portion of all kinetic energy acting upon the mantle into magical healing energy. This healing energy is used to soothe the wounds of the contracted user from the attacks that do get through. Of course, it isn't 100% effective; the effectiveness of the mantle is determined by the potential abilities of its contractor. Along side the protection it offers, it also dramatically boosts the magic ability of the contracted individual. The Mantle of Septu is the most powerful known artifact that Volkarios currently possesses, however it comes at a cost. In return for the amazing protection that Septu offers with his mantle, the contracted user is rendered completely sterile.

General IC Notes:

  • Always looks very clean and business-ready.
  • Has near perfect skin. Hair is also silky/smooth for a guy. A naturally very good-looking guy. Girls who prefer the rugged/rough-looking types won't find much of that in him.
  • Though he is naturally good-looking, he doesn't take pride in it. His pride lies in his aquired artifacts and his knowledge of magical history, though he doesn't boast about it.
  • Easy to talk to.
  • He is a scholar and is always interrested in learning something new, and is very open to criticism.
  • Is a villain because the things he must do to gain power are often considered cruel/evil/illegal. Has nothing against heroes.
  • Does not always agree with the things that he does or the crimes he comits, though he must do them.
  • Doesn't have many connections in the Isles at the moment...
