Motivation
Neil is a fairly shy and reclusive figure much of the time, but deep down he possesses a strong motivation towards adventure. From an early age he was often buried deep in a book, living out adventures in his mind and dreaming of experiencing them himself. Even after changing, his habits did not change.. in fact they grew even stronger. It was escapism, pure and simple. It was only as he became an adult that he realized that he had to change; he was losing his life squirreled away from the eyes of others, his only links to the outside world being the internet, TV and radio. Seeking advice form his family and his few friends, he decided to use his powers to help others: to become a Hero. Perhaps, as a Hero, he would find the recognition: and the acceptance, he craves. He thinks that if he can become well known, he wont find the open fear that he often finds when encountering strangers, that he might be able to start living a 'normal' life.
History
Neil grew up in quite a loving household. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a mutant councillor. A dreamer, Neil often buried himself in books, entranced in story after story of adventure. A smart kid, he was often very unmotivated at school, often dreaming in classes and being thought of as a geek, with only a handful of friends. He cut C's and B's in most classes due to his lack of motivation, hardly paying attention in class. His dreamlike childhood was only marred by two happenings. Firstly, his father died in a shooting when visiting the city, in a bank robbery gone wrong. Unlike many of those who call themselves heroes, this event did not spark feelings of rage, or a call to avenge his loss on all criminals: Neil for his part retreated further into himself in his grief.. losing himself in books, the internet and other such activities, a denial of real life. The second was more profound, on his lifestyle that is..
Despite this, he did make time for friends, and he did leave his house for some things as life tends to make you do. There was of course, school, and the visits to friends houses after school or on weekends, to play video games or hang out around the area. However such an idealistic childhood was to end all too soon in his teenage years.
Neil had never expected to be a mutant.. his parents were not, and neither was any of his family that he knew of. The X genes though, have a habit of appearing where they are least expected. Upon his fifteenth year of life, in the month of July, Niels powers developed. It was a hot summers day, and Neil and his sister were out in their back yard enjoying the sun together, eating lunch. It was at this time that his powers were triggered. Some mutants trigger their powers while asleep, sinking through the floor or moving objects with their mind. Others develop them in moments of fear, energy blasts or forcefields. Neil's first power was high speed regeneration: healing. He triggered is power by a wound: he was stung by a wasp on his arm, likely attracted by the sugar in his drink. This sting was at first painful, as wasp stings tend to be, but with his power it quickly healed. However, high speed regeneration was not his only power. Not all mutants develop powers they have full control of.. and Niels second power was one of these. This power was the ability to take on the characteristics and form of another animal by contact. However, unfortunately this power was a single shot ability, and it was uncontrolled. It was activated by touch, and the sting of the wasp was what triggered his powers, and unfortunate occurrence, but Murphy does like to laugh at events in life.
Before the eyes of his horrified mother and sister, Neil changed in an agonizing manner before them. he change was over in less than a minute, and Neil lay before them after writhing on the ground in pain, changed into a humanoid wasp. His sister passed out from shock, but his mother kept her wits about her and guessed what had happened to him, after dealing with so many mutants in her job. From that day on, life was strained and difficult for him as he adjusted to his new life. If he was reclusive before, he was doubly so now and it took him many months to get used to himself. His relationship with his family was strained at first, but they slowly adjusted to him and gave him all the support they could. His relationship with his friends was damaged at first, as they were understandably freaked out, but slowly adjusted to him. He also dropped out of school, switching to home tutoring.
His life from that point onwards was forever changed, and the years slipped by as he led a life of escapism in books, TV and the internet, rarely venturing form his room, yet alone the house. Life has a habit of catching up with us though, and by the time of his 21st birthday, even he realized that life was slipping him by and that he could not continue as he was doing and still live. Fortunately, he had his family and friends to fall back on and after speaking with them he decided to change to try and move his life forward. After speaking with them over several days he finally took their advice and decided to move to Paragon city, after talking with Hero Corps on the phone, who had offered him a place there and training to use his powers for the better. He was offered a generous salary and a place to live while being employed as a Hero. After a few months training with help from his friends, he packed his things and journeyed to the city to make an attempt to move his life forward.
Appearance
Being a humanoid wasp, he stands a only 4' 2" tall, having shrunk during the change. He bears four arms and has a proportionately large abdomen behind. His head is identical to that of a normal wasp, a pair of Antennae are atop his head above and between large insectoid eyes. His mouth is now a pair of mandibles. Overall, he likely appears quite alien.
Powers
- Regeneration
As his principle power, Neil's regeneration is a strong one, being high speed and strong enough to recover from any wound or damage, even burns from fire or acid. It renders him immune to poison, disease and will lengthen his lifespan possibly indefinitely, as his cells repair themselves perfectly. He will even recover from death, and his body will recreate itself even as long as part of him remains, even a single cell. He also possesses the ability to focus to give himself an instantaneous heal, though this is tiring. (Dull Pain, Reconstruction)
- Flight
As a humanoid wasp, he possesses a set of wings on his back. These give him the ability to fly. though not quite as fast as one who possesses avian wings, they offer better air control and the ability to hover. His capped flying speed is roughly 100mph.
- Acid/Toxic Sting, Creation and Blasts.
As a humanoid wasp, Neil has a stinger on the end of is abdomen that gives him the ability to sting his opponents, injecting them with a small amount of toxin. The stinger is extremely hard, roughly to the level of titanium and can puncture even metals and body armor.
Not only on the stinger, his mutant abilities have given him the ability to sheathe his claws in acid or various toxins, depending what he needs. He is able to shoot/spray it from his claw tips, jaws or stinger at range for attacks. Generally he creates acids for use in combat, but can also create different toxins that can do various things such as slow his opponents muscles or briefly paralyse them. He usually mixes these in with the acids he creates on his claws for extra effect, or uses normal poisons alone.
- Insect control and communication via telepathy
After transforming, he found himself able to communicate telepathically with insects. Though they are not exactly smart enough to discuss Shakespeare with, he is nevertheless able to learn some things from them if need be. He is also able to control them via this telepathy.
- Animal change (gone)
Neil possessed this power when he first became a mutant. It was an uncontrolled power, and a one shot change. the first animal he touched was something he would take on the physical characteristics and a humanoid form of. Unfortunately it was a wasp sting that triggered his powers and with this being the case, it was the first creature he came into contact with.
- Super Strength and Toughness
As an insect type, Neil has enhanced strength and resilience. He can lift up to about 12 tons total, as insects possess strength enough to lift huge weights compared to their body size. His body is also capable of taking the strain of these kinds of weights and blows.
- Armor shell
As a humanoid insect, his body has a hard chitinous shell. This is stronger than that of an ordinary insect and is tough enough to provide good protection against attacks, providing protection to about Iron level. It can deflect the blows of a hammer, the stab or a knife or gunshots. It does not make him impervious, but does give some manner of defence.
