Personality
"It's like Shaft got reincarnated as a Japanese dude!" -- Lt. Basinns, PPD
Slick, cool and smooth, Watanabe Shinichi charms the ladies and intimidates the bad guys. He walks into every room as though he's the guest of honor and has total control. He moves through the bustle of the city as though he were the only one on the street. Cool and confidence permeate every move he makes and every word he speaks.
If only he didn't sound like a character from a 1970s blaxploitation film... Some of his coworkers think he should work up the impact of the resulting cognitive dissonance until it's a power in its own right, but no one has the guts to say it to his face.
The fact that he's remarkably successful goes a long way toward alleviating his coworkers' reactions to him. Well, that and his remarkable success with the ladies -- sometimes it seems like he can't stop a purse-snatching or shakedown without making a date with the victom.
Powers
All of Watanabe's special abilities extend from the awesome power of the Afro. As long as his hair remains at or longer than its current length, its mystic properties grant him superhuman abilities, including but not limited to the ability to hide vast quantities of weaponry within its bushy depths, and imbuing his punches with a power far beyond that available to a normal human.
Assault Rifle
Watanabe normally carries a high-powered modular assault rifle in his hair, capable of chambering multiple ammunition types. This is the primary weapon he uses when enforcing the law.
Energy Manipulation
The second major gift of the Power of the Afro is a flood of energy that he can channel into his fists during hand-to-hand combat. With this energy he can batter and knock away his foes with greater power and style than any normal person.
Additional Powers
Watanabe also possesses the Sands of Mu, which expresses yet another variation on the hand-to-hand combat abilities granted by his hair.
Teleportation
The Power of the Afro recognizes that a hero must respond promptly to challenges; to this end, it has guided Watanabe through the process of learning how to teleport.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Watanabe is especially vulnerable to only two things: scissors, and ultra-cute aliens. Since the Rikti certainly don't count as the latter, he's considerably safer than he was back in Fukuoka.
Equipment
Watanabe normally carries a Jump Pack, Base Transporter, and Pocket D VIP card.
He currently has temporary use of a Flight Pack of Sky Pirate design and manufacture.
Character History
Watanabe Shinichi was a police detective in the Japanese city of Fukuoka. When a superpowered criminal fled from Japan to Paragon City, Watanabe followed, and like a certain Mountie over in Overbrook, stayed in the United States after the case was completed -- first as a liaison on a kind of "exchange program", and then later as a naturalized American citizen and full-time member of the Paragon Police Department's most elite division, Paragon Special Investigations (PSI).
Trivia
Despite his otherwise complete integration into American society, Watanabe retains the traditional Japanese order to his name -- to wit, family name first, personal name last.
