Background

Bright Just Light

The Kheldian, Bright Just Light, was a watcher. Basically a scout and social observer, it traveled from planet to planet to watcher the indigenous life. Searching for signs of sentience and studying such life was its primary duties. It found Earth and began studying various Pacific cultures before it was imprisoned in a special gemstone created specifically for entrapping Kheldian life forces. While fighting a Nictus on the island of Juktara, the young Kheldian was lured to the trap and was imprisoned on an island with primitive humans. The Nictus hid the prison in a cavern and caused the section to cave in.

The Prophecy

On Juktara there resides a tribe of people. One of these people, a Juktari tribal shamaness, had a vision and recited the prophecy to the Keepers of History and Prophecy. This prophecy concerned a future time when the people were oppressed by the rich. During such a time, a boy with horns would break the shackles of oppression and bring prosperity to the people.

When the Chieftain heard of this prophecy, he conspired with the Keepers to change it. Instead of saving the people, the boy would now bring disaster and ruin. This false prophecy would be key to the Chieftain's plans of instating his plans for domination of the island.

The Chieftain had a cloaking field magically spread over the island to hide it from the spirits. Though he didn't know of a whole world, this field also his the island from the rest of the world for ages to come. The magics of this invisibility field were strong and interacted with a latent recessive gene that would give boys who inherited the gene a pair of horns.

Vryn

Several thousand years later, the island remained oppressed by the ruling class. The Chieftain was a tyrant and the Keepers had become false representatives of their religion. Life was unpleasant for the common people, but for one pair it was about to become worse.

A young couple gave birth to a boy with horn buds. Like every such boy before him, he was named Vryn, meaning "he who is enchained" or "he who is imprisoned" as he was destined to be exiled to the Unholy Caverns.

His mother never recovered from the birth. She became depressed about what she had brought forth and eventually perished. His father committed suicide soon after. Such occurrences were not uncommon for the parents of horned boys.

While the other boys were training to become men, Vryn was learning the rituals he would be required to perform before he was exiled to the Unholy Caverns. While many of the people felt sorry for him, they were afraid of what he could do if he was allowed to live.

On the Day of Ascension, when the Rites of Passage were performed by the other boys who had come of age, Vryn was taken to a chamber of the Temple to perform the Rites of Purification. These rites were little more than torture techniques designed to keep the boy weak for transport to the Unholy Caverns.

Fate

Vryn was left in the Unholy Caverns to starve to death like many boys had before him. As fate would have it, however, an earthquake shook loose the earth barring entrance to hidden tunnels in the back of the cavern.

Vryn, having nothing better to do, explored the tunnels. Perhaps there was food or a way out. Perhaps there was a monster or demon waiting to turn him into its next meal. Either way, he took his chances.

After exploring the tunnels for a day, he came upon a chamber with a glowing gemstone showing partially from within a large stone in the center of the room. He found a stone, and painfully lifted it over his head and tossed it as best he could toward the rock holding the glowing gem.

The gem cracked from the endeavor and the glowing energy escaped. The freed Kheldian told the boy not to be afraid. It explained to him that it was a being of peace, but could not live long outside a host. After explaining to the boy what a merging entailed, Vryn accepted. His life was forfeit anyway.

The joined being renamed himself Z'Kovryn, meaning "he who liberates from chains" or "he who liberates from prison" since he planned to do that very thing for his people. He returned to the village. Just as in the original prophecy, he dethroned the Chieftain and exposed the Keepers.

As the Kheldian was originally studying these people before the Nictus intervened, Z'Kovryn was able to give the people his notes on their religion from before the corruption. A new order of Keepers was established and Z'Kovryn reluctantly took the place of Chieftain.

Leaving Juktara

As Chieftain, he initiated contact with the rest of the world. The trade and aid his people received brought prosperity as the prophecy had foretold. For eight years he reigned as Chieftain before he gave in to his desire to explore Earth. Setting up a democratic system of rulership on the island, he left after a new Chieftain was chosen.

He made his way toward the United States, settling in Paragon City after meeting with Sunstorm. He has since devoted his time to fighting crime and evil.

Personality

Death

As his human half was sentenced to death as a child and his Kheldian half subconsciously witnessed the deaths of many boys before, Z'Kovryn has a, perhaps unhealthy, obsession with death. He likes to study cultures' death rituals, afterlife beliefs, art pertaining to death, and other such things.

Self-Righteous

Many Peacebringers hold a rather zealous view of their pursuit of Justice. Z'Kovryn, takes this one step further and tends to act as if he was appointed to his task of seeking Justice through the destruction of Evil by Divine Decree. Anyone who questions his right to punish Evil will be met with severe indignation.
