Origin/History

(( pending a lot of re-writing, this space is empty. ))

Powers

James' only real power is his immortality.
The full extent of this power is still unknown, but it is capable of reviving him from lethal wounds.
In the past this has included having his head removed and being incinerated.
What others would call 'regeneration' is merely a side effect of this power.

Skills and Abilities

His many years of fighting have made him a master of nearly all close fighting weapons, though he prefers the swords he was initially trained with. His fighting style has evolved over the centuries to include many martial arts styles and a fair amount of acrobatics. His normal training regimen is designed to keep himself in as fit condition as is possible, and he is capable of running faster and jumping farther than would seem possible without superhuman powers.

In addition, James has travelled the world extensively and knows the languages and ways of a dozen different cultures well enough to pass for a native. His knowledge of world history and the specifics of some major events surpasses even some of the modern day's so-called experts. After all, someone that lived through an event knows better than someone that had to read a book.

While not as skilled a detective as some other heroes, James does possess a keen eye and has the knowledge to make use of the clues he does find.

Relationships

Friends

Over the years James has grown reluctant to get close to anyone, knowing that he will outlive them and their children, and -their- children...
Sometimes people still manage, through luck or determination, to get through that reserve. Among those people are the following:

Blonde Brawler - A chance meeting and dance amidst a rampant snowball fight at the Chalet in Pocket D sparked what has become possibly the most important thing in James' life right now. His love for the nearly invulnerable woman has caused him to go off half cocked at the slightest provocation and gotten him into incredible amounts of danger. She was, however, almost the only person to stand by him when a doppelganger was attempting to destroy his reputation and credibility. This cemented his feelings for her.
Sentinel of Twilight - While not terribly close when he joined the All Star Teens, James has grown to trust Twi almost implicitly since then. His wedding gift to her when she married Zeiban was a pair of very old cups that originally graced the table of his own father. He has yet to tell her of this fact, and with the dissolution of her marriage, doesn't really feel it neccessary.
Six of Diamonds - Once very close friends, James was her confidant in a number of things early on. He was always willing to lend a hand or ear whenever she needed, helping her through some very rough times before she was fully healed from the ordeals that gave her powers. Her recent actions have troubled him greatly, though he is determined to save her from her own darkness. A darkness he sees himself potentially capable of all too well.
Schattenmaus - "tag fraulein." Those two words were all he needed to say to brighten this young woman's day upon their first meeting. He has since become quite protective of her, despite her not needing protecting.
Captain Crosshairs - Sharing in some of the troubles of longevity, both men found a measure of respect for each other during, of all things, a game of truth or dare during a monthly social gathering of The Gods of the Golden Age. At one point James was asked 'what is the worst thing you've seen in your life?' Stricken by memories of times that he preferred to forget, the Captain came to his defense, chiding the questioner. Later, ironically less experienced in matters of the heart, James talked to Cap about certain troubles he was having. Since then, Cap asked James to be the best man at his wedding to Ultradynamic, an honor he readily accepted.
Proud Citizen - A hero following in the footsteps of those before him, James knew the original Proud Citizen, and fought beside him on a number of bleak WWII battlefields. On at least one occassion, he has told this new hero that his namesake would be very proud of all he's accomplished.
Pinup Girl - It's only recently that James learned that the Pinup Girl he met during a GAH Social gathering is not actually the one he knew in the 1940s. Still, he's found this new heroine to be capable, and deserving of the name. Occasionally he visits when there isn't some pressing heroic task to tell her stories about the people she grew up with and simply talk.

Enemies

Given his immortality, most people that could be called his enemy have long since passed away.
There are some that qualify anyhow:

Neverending - James Loring from the Praetorian universe. There's nothing quite so disturbing as seeing yourself in a twisted mirror. Coming from his own universe to find a challenge, Neverending nearly succeeded in turning the world against James. Only his own arrogance and the loyalty of Blonde Brawler managed to keep it from happening.
Reichsmaiden - A former Nazi supersoldier, Ilse at first made efforts to be a force for good. It took a great deal of willpower for him to give her that chance. An gesture she subsequently destroyed by attacking his teammates and causing a level of terror that some of his friends are still dealing with.
Anna Hollister - Originally a pirate during the mid-1500s, she was once a close friend and ally of James. He has continued to encounter her over the years, seemingly at random, sometimes never knowing it was her.
Bouncing Jack - Jack is currently listed as a hero in Paragon City. Accepting that Jack's unique situation is responsible for this, and that the Carnival of Shadows was ultimately responsible for all the damage he caused, James still refuses to trust Jack. He's already seen what havoc the clown can cause and doesn't want to see any of his friends caught in that again.
