History and Background
Born a normal human girl in October of 1982. Her mother was Marie Ann Carae, a homemaker. Her father Jaques Sebastian Carae, a construction worker. They made their home in a modest abode in the Galaxy City region of Paragon.
Interests.
Fara’s interests had always been in the occult, ever since middle school. Most of the time, her ‘research’ involved simple books of fiction containing ‘magic spells’ and ‘rituals’. Of course just being published fiction, the spells and rituals never actually did anything, but that was fine by Fara’s estimation. Partly because the set up and anticipation were so amusing and partly because her interest in the occult really cheesed her parents off; it was her form of teenage rebellion, harmless as it was.
College life
Fara attended the University of Paragon, majoring in Education, with a minor in philosophy. She attempted to join up with a student group in MAGI, but was rejected due to a complete lack of any magical abilities. This didn’t stop her ‘hobby’ which she did for amusement while most of the other students pursued more traditional forms of college recreation.
It was her freshman year when Fara met her first real love interest. An international studies major by the name of Kyle Pensworth swept Fara off her feet and quickly became her very first boyfriend. Their romance was quick to blossom, but also had some staying power, it was clear the relation was much more than a flash in the pan.
Come sophomore year, Fara was proposed to by Kyle and she accepted. Not wanting to be too hasty, the two made an unsaid agreement that they wouldn’t wed until they both graduated. Overjoyed at the life ahead of her Fara started planning for the life of a mother, even though the wedding itself was 2 years away.
Transformation
While most of the books Fara read for fun were just that, fun, one book that found its way into possession was actually real. Real in the sense that it contained real rituals that yielded real magical results, unlike all the commercial published fiction books she had read previously.
The book was on shamanistic rituals, specifically becoming a shaman. As Fara completed the rituals, she realized they were actually working. She slowly gained command of the very earth and weather around her. She was careful with these newfound powers, not wanting to cause any harm or damage to other people or buildings. She mostly practiced with a pot of peat moss. It is when she was able to control both the earthenware pot along with the peat moss inside of it that she knew she was really getting in control.
The final part of her ritual was the ritual of the shaman, where she would fully anoint herself as a shaman and be chosen by a totem. In her zeal to complete this final ritual, she skipped over the ritual before it.
As she performed her final ritual in the privacy of her single dorm room, she felt in horror as her human body began to break down, both physically and spiritually. A pair of masked eyes stared at her from the ether. She feel their gaze begin to pierce her, and wrap itself around her, both body and spirit. While the process was quite violent and painful, she knew in her heat that this being wasn’t doing her harm…it was saving her life.
Several hours later Fara awoke, sore and dizzy. She awoke to the sound of a knock at her door. With a tired paw she reached up to open the door. It was her Fiancé, Kyle, there to pick her up for dinner. She smiled weakly to him. That smile soon vanished as she saw his face. Kyle tore out of the room and down the hall, yelling “DEMON” and “BEAST!” at the top of his lungs. The dorm mates who went to investigate came to the same conclusion and soon began to flee. It wasn’t long until the entire dorm began to panic and riot. Fara, sharing in the panic, fled herself.
Fara was quickly subdued by a pair of unknown heroes. One wielding the power of fire and flying along. The other crusted with crystals and wielding the strength of a battering ram.
The half human, half raccoon ‘beast’ was subdued. In all 17 students were injured during the riot and panic…none of which were caused by Fara or her powers.
The Early Years
Fara was released from the Zig after 6 months of captivity. She was acquitted of any wrong-doing in the dorm riots, after investigators found no evidence of her powers being involved in any of the injuries suffered. Further, a new program that gave on-the-fence supers a chance to show their good intentions drafted Fara. She was given some rather awful jobs cleaning up sewers of Vahz and often with little or no help. The scary part was that she was not recognized as a hero, and thus did not receive a mediporter.
After many deaths in this program, public outcry caused the city to scrap it. Fara was luckily not among those killed in the sewers. Now a free woman and officially a hero, Fara was able to establish herself in the community. Raccoon’s presence was strong in Gemini Park, which happened to be her favorite place to play as a little girl. She established her shaman’s lodge in the large dead tree next to the river.
Clash with Crey
As she grew in experience, Fara came up against the agents of Crey time and again. The very things they did often harmed and violated the land and spirits in the area. As a result, they soon put Fara on their hit list. One of Fara’s contacts was ‘leaked’ information about an illegal Crey project taking place in a warehouse in Independence Port. It was said that some top Crey executives, maybe even the countess herself, would be there. Fara went instantly. Little did she know it was a trap. An entire platoon of Crey snipers was stationed in the building. All covered in sealant wax to prevent their scents from filling the air.
Fara had little chance. Not only was she killed by the sniper fire, a well-placed bullet shot off her mediporter before it could activate. What the snipers didn’t factor was what happens when a shaman is killed. A massive torrent of spirits and energy flooded the building; the very warehouse itself was swallowed up in a massive sink hole, trapping the snipers inside.
Connection with Phoenix
One would expect that death would be end of Fara, but her totem had other plans. Not wanting to lose its only shaman in Paragon City, Raccoon partnered up with another greater spirit: Phoenix. With the aid of the firebird, spirit of rebirth, Fara’s spirit did not pass on to the next world, or get reincarnated like it normally would. Rather Raccoon and Phoenix made a tether and gently bound Fara to her tree, not as a form of imprisonment, but of sustainment. Tied spiritually to her tree and fed by the energy drawn from her shamanistic lodge, Fara’s spirit awoke, alive and well.
Along Came a Mouse
While Fara regained her spiritual strength in her tree, a pair of spirits came to visit. One was a Phoenix spirit named Albia. Albia was to be the envoy from Phoenix, to maintain a connection and communication with the firebird.
The other spirit that came along was a greater spirit of Mouse named Athieania. The spirit came to learn about the world of Earth, or ‘the prime material plane’ as Athie would put it.
Putting their spiritual heads together, Fara and Athieania came up with a technique new for both of them. Dubbed ‘physical manifestation’ the technique allows a living spirit to manifest a physical flesh-and-blood body. It took much practice on both their parts to get good at it. With enough trial and error, Fara was able to reliability manifest her old raccoon self, complete with her old outfit. Athie, having never controlled a physical body before, took awhile longer to become comfortable enough to manifest a proper body.
Maggie’s Rock
Maggie’s rock is an orphanage, for both mundane and super-powered children. Fara was one of the founding members and maintains her role to this day. While the Orphanage has fallen into decline, with most of the older kids having grown out of it or departed, Fara maintains her role as Kindergarten teacher for the youngest students. To keep her classroom full, she has transformed her class into a private school; teaching the orphans for free, but teaching other young children with super powered potential for a fee.
Fara’s class focuses on promoting diversity and making the children who may be ‘out of place’ in ‘normal society’ feel welcome and at home. She also promotes language development by teaching all of her students, even ones not magically inclined, to see and speak with spirits.
Herbal Teas
Having retried, for the most part, from her heroing work, Fara focuses on both her teaching as well as a few other side projects. One of her skills that she has developed over her years as a shaman is the art of brewing teas. Not just your mundane teas either. Having gathered roots, herbs and flowers from several planes of existence, she has found some potent and unique mixtures she can brew. From as mundane as helping one sleep better at night to as magical as curing amnesia, Fara has yet to find a problem a particular tea can’t solve.
Known Powers
By channeling the gifts of her totem, as well as gifts from Phoenix, Fara can command all four elements. She relies primarily on earth, her first and most deeply connected element. Being able to reshape the very ground to her needs, she has no problem taking down entire squads of evildoers, of course she always is more effective when she has another hero’s firepower backing her up.
