Grey Lycan is a character created by @BurntHeart as an alternate personality of the main character Spirit of Stone. Grey Lycan is the result of an Roleplaying Event held within the game of City of Heroes by the members of the Guardian Angels Reborn. The consequences of this event left the character, Spirit of Stone, with a bite from a Werewolf foe involved in that event. The inspiration for this character came out of a discussion with various members of that group about dealing with the consequences of unintended in-game actions and started with the simple statment by myself, "Well, you know Stone was bitten by Valon during that fight, seems like something should happen because of that."

Personality

Grey Lycan's personality differs from Spirit of Stone's in many ways. While both personalities inhabit the same mind and generally the same body, in spite of the transformation to Werewolf form, they are both seperate and complete entities. Lycan and Stone each voluntarily trade places as the dominate consciousness, allowing each other freedom to use their body in their work as heroes. Stone remains dominate during daily functioning, maintaining his business and homelife, while Lycan tends to emerge only to investigate mystical occurances or in times of great stress.

When dominate, Lycan's personality is best described as studying. He is constantly reviewing his surroundings, assessing those around him, sensing for magical use or spirit acitivities. He remains on alert at all times and can be easily enraged by callouse misuse of magics around him.

He views his role as an overseer of humanity, of a sort, a shepard to ensure the safty of humanity against mystical attacks and manipulations. He is generally offended by humans practicing magical use as he believes mystical use is only the prevy of initiates of the Goddess Luna. He has learned to tolerate magical heroes who are human, only because he understands that an attempt to end what he views as blasphemy would result in his return to incarceration.

Powers

As a Werewolf, Lycan possesses extremely dangerous claws on both his hands and feet. He possesses Perternatural Strength as well as mystical abilities to sense magical auras and spirit presences. Lycan is also able to transform, not only from Thomas Stone (Spirit of Stone), but also in a more humanoid form on himself.

Claws

Wolf on the prowl

In both his full Werewolf form and his more humaniod form, Lycan possesses extremely dangerous claws on both his hands in feet. He uses these claws in slashing attacks to injure his foes to the point of no longer being able to attack him. Great care is used in his fighting tactics to avoid fatal attacks with his claws and will, as needed, resort to physical blows to render an attacker unconscious to avoid a killing strike.

This attack style is contrary to his predatory nature, but the situation surrounding his "birth" made him accutely aware of the consequences of killing his foes. He does not agree with the concept of "arresting" villains, but complies with it for the sanity of his host Spirit of Stone and to avoid being hunted himself by other heroes and authorities.

Physical Resistances

As a Werewolf, Lycan possesses powerful abilities to withstand physical assaults on his body, taking minimal damage. Blunt weapons and guns are generally a mild annoyance for him. Mystical attacks using dark magics are able to harm him, but he is able to resist them somewhat. Bladed weapons are able to cause damage to his body, but he possesses regenerative powers that are able to handle these wounds quickly. Normal dangers for Werewolfs, such as fire and weapons containing silver pose little threat to Lycan. The mutant powers of his host body, Spirit of Stone, allows him immunity from silver due to Stone's ability to control earth. Fire poses only a minimal threat to Lycan, again thanks to Stone's mutation.

The real threat to Lycan come in the forms of spells, charms, and potions. His minor resistances to dark magics are easily overwhelmed by multiple attacks and his fighting skills can be deminished by a few well placed spells or charms to affect his aim and strength.

Transformation

Grey Lycan in partial transformation

When Lycan and Stone trade places, mentally, the body they share undergoes a transformation into Lycan's full Werewolf form. Standing just over eight feet tall, he is transformed into a looming creature covered in grey fur. He is not as large as Stone, while in Werewolf form, as Stone is much broader than Lycan's form, but the height of Stone's original form remains.

Initially Lycan was only able to transform during the three nights of the full moon. They are now able to switch places at will after Lycan underwent a mentorship from an emissary of the Goddess Luna. The emissary, Luna's Light, guided Lycan in fully realizing the extent of his powers, both inate powers he has as a Werewolf, and the additional abilities he had due to Stone's mutation.

During his training with Luna's Light, Lycan learned to control the level of his own transformation to some degree and is able to affect a more humanoid form when needed. As he grows in control over his own powers Lycan will be able to affect an even more human form, different from Thomas Stone's form.

Mystical Senses

Lycan possess inate abilities as a Werewolf which allow him to sense the use of magic, magical items and artifacts, mystical energies and auras, as well as detect the presence of spirits and apparitions. He also posses sharpened sense of smell and hearing and is able to track a friend or foe by scent. He is a natural predator and his hunting kicks in on instinct a foe flees. Lycan also, but nature, is a killer. He works hard to keep this instinct in check, but when faced with extremely stressful situations or highly egregious affronts to magics, he has been known to fly into a fural rage that is difficult to control.

Character History

Grey Lycan came into being two years ago as the result of a bite to the shoulder that Spirit of Stone recieved while fighting a Werewolf known only as Valon. Due to Stone's limited intelligence and large unused portions of his brain, the lycan cells infecting his body were able to affect the creation of a fully developed pure blood werewolf rather than a lesser developed half breed or turned werewolf that would have commonly been the result of a bite to a human for this particular breed of werewolf.

This unusual development created two seperate and distinct personalities between Stone and Lycan, instead of a human who turns into a savage beast in the light of the full moon. Grey Lycan retains his own mind, his own thoughts, his own motivations, and his own memories, in spite of sharing a body and brain with Stone.

Infection

Full Story After recieving a bite to the shoulder from the werewolf Valon, Tommy Stone became infected with lycan cells. These cells took roughly two full months to spread throughout Stone's body and create the being now known as Grey Lycan. Valon's breed, calling themselves The Forge Watchers, is made up mostly of full blood born werewolves. Occassionally a Forge Watcher will mistakenly infect a human host with their lycan cells and the result is typically a human who transforms into a blood thirst beast in the light of the full moon with no reasoning powers of it's own, only the instinct to hunt and kill.

In the case of Stone, this did not occur. The lycan cells that infected his body found a host of immense strength and mutated genes of it's own. They also found a brain that was not being used fully, due to Tommy's limited education and intelligence. These factors caused the lycan cells merging with Stone's own cells to adapt to his mutation and take over large unused portions of his brain, creating a seperate consciousness within Tommy's own mind.

Once the infection had spread and adapted the change to a new werewolf form was at hand. The normal run on a lycanthropic infection in the Forge Watcher breed generally takes two to three weeks and transformation occurs on the first full moon after this time. In Tommy's case it was nearly two full months before the infection had completed it alterations and was ready for it's first transformation.

The Hunter Becomes Hunted

The three nights of the full moon began with Tommy's transformation in his bed, sick. Tommy believed he had caught a cold and was sleeping when the moon rose on the first night. The creature who would later been known as Grey Lycan emerged from Stone's body as course grey hairs sprouted all over him and bones and muscle shifted positions to their new form.

The hulking eight foot tall beast leapt out of the window of Tommy's apartment in Kings Row and began it's first hunt. It quickly and easily found a group of four members of the street gang The Skulls and attacked without mercy, ripping all four to shreds. Tommy awoke the next morning, feeling his fever and cold gone with no memory of the events of the night before.

The second night of the full moon the newly born lycan hunted again, drawn to track down a hazy memory of something called a "Bad Mans"; a vague memory leak from Stone's consciousness. That night Lycan found a group of three Circle of Thorns hunting for a new host. Lycan sensed the foul magics around them and slautered them without hesitation. Later that night he smelled fear in the air and tracked the scent to a group of Lost attempting to kidnap a homeless man.

Lycan leapt out of the shadows and ravaged the smaller men weilding hatches and donning lids of trash cans. In their blood he could taste the taint of their genetic manipulations, but did not know what it was. The larger being, wearing a broken TV set on it's head proved to be slightly more of a challange and withstood the first few attacks from Lycan, but was evisorated in the end. Lycan nudded the homeless man away once his attackers were killed.

On the morning of the third full moon Tommy awoke on the streets of Kings Row sleeping against an abandoned factory. He was uncertain why he was there and returned home to find news of the second night's killing spree was the talk of the hero community in Kings Row. A coalition of heroes, led by his own group, The Guardian Angels Reborn, was commissioned and charged with the task of patrolling the streets of Kings Row the next night to stop this killer.

Eye witness reports from the homeless man and several witness watching from various buildings had reports some sort of wolfman on the prowl in The Row. The heroes were broken into small five man teams to patrol the streets of Kings Row.

Once the moon had risen fully in the night's sky, the team Tommy was assigned to was shocked to discover that the beast they were hunting was clearly among them. All the heroes in the coalition swarmed the location of Tommy's team to find him transformed into the hulking grey beast. They managed to corner him and subdue him until sunrise, when he returned to his natural form with no memory of what had happened.

Once Stone learned that he was the werewolf they had been hunting and that in his wolf form he was the one responsible for the killings of the previous two nights, Tommy found the only option left to him was to turn himself in to the Paragon City Police Department. He was accompanied by several members of GAR as he strode through the doors of PCPD headquarters and turned himself in.

Making Peace with Stone

After his trail for murder was over and Stone was conviced of involuntary manslaughter, his sentence was such that during the three nights of the full moon he would report to Paragon Psychiatric and Behavioral Health to be locked in a cell there during his period of transformation. The courts deemed that while Tommy was not responsible for the actions of the werewolf, the wolf itself posed a serious danger to the population.

Tommy assured the courts that he would be able to "tame" the beast within him and reform it's murderous ways. With help from GAR's resident psychic, Empathica, a link between the two minds; Tommy and Lycan, was established, allowing them communicate and remember the actions of the other regardless of who had possession of thier shared body.

The psychiatrists over seeing his case determined quickly that Lycan's attacks, though fatal, were not in fact based on a murderous intent, but were instead the result of Lycan's cultural beliefs that his breed and race were ordained shephards of humanity and that it was their responsiblity to "cull the herd" of humanity, weeding out undesireable traits, such as violent attackers and abusers of magics.

Working with the psychiatrists and fellow member of GAR, Caios, who was a vampire and very familiar with werewolf behaviors and cultures, Tommy and Lycan were able to come to an understanding of how important it was that Lycan learn to behave in accordance with this worlds laws and beliefs in spite of his own cultural beliefs. Lycan's work with Caios in this regards turned the tide and allowed Lycan to make peace with his place in this world.

The Light Decends

Once his sentence had been served and the doctors deemed him no longer a threat to the populace, Lycan was freed to spend the three nights of full moon hunting criminals as a licensed hero in his own right.

It was at this time that a mystical figure appeared to him, calling herself Luna's Light, she claimed to be an emissary of the Goddess Luna, whom Lycan's breed had pledged themselves millinia ago. Luna's Light informed Lycan that she had been sent down from the Choir of Lunes by Luna herself for the sole purpose of training Lycan in the ways of his breed and help him find his purpose in this world he was unfamiliar with. She re-enforced the concepts established by Caios and the psychiatrists, telling Lycan that others of his kind were charged with "culling the herd" of humanity, but that is true purpose was to bridge the gap between the worlds by being a creature of Luna while walking in the world of man.

Under her tutorship Lycan learned to use all of his inate abilities as a preternatural creature and also learned to control the transformation from Tommy's body to his own, allowing them to switch places at will instead of being slaves to the lunar cycle.

Life as a Hero

Once his education in the ways of his breed had been completed Luna's Light took a less active role in Lycan's day to day life. He and Tommy have become close friends, relying on each others strengths to balance out their own weaknesses.

Lycan hunts criminals regularly, particularly focusing on abusers of magics and has thus far been able to keep his instinct to strike a killing blow at bay. He made many friends among GAR during his time as an active member of the group and was saddened when the group was forced to disband by the city council. Since joining the ranks of The Phoenix Force he had become somewhat more solitary in his hunting, but continues to rely on the close friends he made in GAR as well as Tommy.
