Leon Hawkeye

From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe

Jump to: navigation, search

Leon was created by modifying an original character of mine. He's very much a throwback to 80s-90s action film heroes and borrows many elements from those characters. A former background in the military that's never fully explored. A failed marriage that he never wanted to fall apart. A poor relationship with whatever children he had. And ect. Since those movies have "aged" I decided to age him appropriately. I decided to make him a sort or relic amongst the all-too-common young and handsome anti-heroes. He became an aged warhorse, a throwback to another age. An old man who has nothing left but to just live the life he chose.

History

Early Years

Leon was born in Paragon City and lived an average childhood. He didn't really get exceptional grades but he didn't do poorly in school. Growing up he admired the occasional heroes he saw in the city and in television/movies. He was raised upon the old hero ideals of truth, justice, and a black and white world. This mentality stuck with him throughout high school. Believing the world was either good or evil.

Military Career

The moment he graduated from high school he went into the army and found out he was a talented soldier. Eventually he'd join a Special Forces unit because of his skill in field operations. This labeled him as one of the "Green Berets". Once he had established his place within the military he was deployed to serve in Vietnam.

Though, in a twist of fate, the Special Forces Group he was assigned to encountered foreign and communist "supers". Although these conflicts often resulted in them losing good men, they would always be able to overcome the communist supers. Giving birth to Leon's philosophy that "anything will go down with enough bullets in them".

This is all that is known about Leon's career in the military, due to a good chunk of it being classified. Shortly before the Vietnam war ended he returned to the US.

Civilian Life

Although the war was over and he had returned to the United States; he was questioned regularly about the supers he encountered in Vietnam. Mainly what their powers were, how they acted, and who was killed. During this time he stayed on a military base. At a friend's birthday party at their favorite bar Leon met he woman who would eventually become his wife.

The two dated for years and eventually married after it seemed Leon would remain on a military paycheck as long as they continued to question him about the Supers. Though this life wouldn't last for long as they eventually got all the information they could from him. Though, at the same time, he was approached by a representative of the CIA.

Life as a CIA "Operative"

Leon's role in the CIA, even to this day, remains covered with a "black highlighter". What is known is up to speculation and the little blurbs he mentions to those he works with. It seems he acted as a sort of "field operative", someone who was regularly deployed to foreign areas to assist with various operations and gather information for "National Security". Keeping in mind this happened during the "Cold War", it doesn't take much thinking to figure out the details of what he did.

There also was talk that because of Leon's experience in fighting supers, the various operations he was assigned had to do something with foreign meta-humans.

Personal Life during this time

Although Leon was constantly off working, he did his best to remain a good husband. He made sure to spend as much time as possible with his wife, often attending various gatherings that she enjoyed but he didn't show much interest in. After years working for the CIA he'd eventually father a daughter, Lucia Hawkeye.

Once again he did his best to be there for his daughter, trying to be present for all of those major moments in a child's life. Though, despite his efforts, he'd miss a good number of birthdays, Christmases, and the like. When she became a young teen it looked like she was turning out more like her father then her mother. A hardass tomboy with a liking for guns, archery, and getting into fist fights. But despite getting her father's "hardass genetics" she eventually grew to resent her father for never being there for her.

Not too long after his daughter turned thirteen his wife divorced him and left with another man who Leon quotes as being a "limp wristed metrosexual type". This fellow also was despised by Lucia, and ironically brought Leon a little closer to his daughter as they had a "common enemy".

Leaving the CIA

Before he left the CIA Leon was hospitalized with injuries that almost took his life. After remaining on a hospital bed for several months he got up, left the hospital, and left the CIA. The operation that sent him to an hospital is believed to be the "last straw" which left Leon questioning his patriotism.

For about a year Leon remained unemployed and lived off his life savings. Drifting between cities, he received some income as a gun for hire. But the nature of what he did is something he rarely ever discusses.

Mercenary Work

After fully recovering from his wounds Leon became a full time mercenary, ironically most of his jobs were closely tied to things he would have done if he remained in the CIA. Though this time he would find himself working next to metahumans instead of just against them. Lending his military knowledge, field leadership skills, and strategic thinking to get an edge over various super villain organizations.

After working with Super Heroes he heard about the state of Paragon, and decided to return home.

Returning to a City of Heroes

A surprised Leon returned to Paragon city, noticing that the metahuman population on both sides had increased significantly. Seeing potential for a better career, he decided to become a mercenary in the City of Heroes.

The Rikti War

Leon was an active fighter in the Rikti War. Because he was already a veteran of the Vietnam War as well an expert on combating metahumans he proved his worth in combat. When Vanguard formed he was scouted to receive a rather high, but never disclosed as to what, ranking within Vanguard because of his combat experience. Though Leon refused, as he didn't trust the organization. But this didn't keep him from being on the Vanguard's payroll, as he worked for them as a mercenary.

Because of his experience in the field of battle Leon was part of a unique support team for the Alpha Team. They were essentially a team of veteran snipers who stayed just far enough from the main battle to act as sniper support for VIP heroes, take down any Rikti VIPs, and because they had a better vantage point--relay information to various groups. After the epic battle had ended Leon got his last paycheck from Vanguard and disappeared.

Current Life

After recovering from the injuries he received fighting in the Rikti war he resurfaced in Paragon to do mercenary work for various hero organizations.

Outside his work as a gun for hire in Paragon he lives a rather simple, solitary life. With the money he receives for various jobs he found a suitable apartment. His home is described as surprisingly clean and very simple. A living room with a cheap TV he bought in a pawn shop, a record player, an autographed Elvis poster, a couch, and a recliner. A bedroom with a queen sized bed, an autographed John Wayne poster, a small TV/DVD combo an ex-girlfriend bought him, and a large collection of John Wayne DVDs. A kitchen with a neglected stove and oven and an overused microwave. And a bathroom with the bare essentials.

Leon is described by friends as a bad cook, barely able to make a suitable meal with a TV dinner. One of the reasons his friends tell him to start dating again is so he can find himself a woman to cook for him.

Leon also owns a Basset Hound named "Duke". Because he's a single man with a dangerous line of work he's given his apartment key to the wife of his neighbor, who takes Duke out on regular walks and lets him in her apartment occasionally when Leon isn't around.

The Hideout

After moving from various organizations Leon currently works alongside The Hideout, a group of mercenaries co-lead by Gelle. A woman who he was hired to watch over to ensure that Arbiter Death didn't kill her. After some time the two would cross paths again and he'd join the group to provide his experience. As a seasoned mercenary and soldier his experience allows him to watch over the younger members in the organization--although he doesn't get along with some of them at all.

Personality

Hawkeye is, to a degree, a grumpy old man. While he doesn't complain much his old age and life has made him a tad bitter and cynical. He's a loner by nature and is only really interested in is fighting, though no one seems to know why this battle-worn warhorse is still doing it.

Leon is known for showing a kinder side for children and women, having a soft spot for kids. There even is a little story about how he couldn't complete a job and assassinate a target simply because the person called for their mother. Some believe he feels guilty for not being there for his own child and loses sight whenever he's reminded of a kid. As for women, being an old fashioned guy he makes sure to treat them well.

As someone rather cynical, he doesn't believe himself to be a hero. Whenever one thanks him, praises him, or even mentions he's a hero. He immediately brings up the fact he's a mercenary, or claims the only reason he did what he did was because he got paid. While he tries to make himself seem like a person who doesn't care--he has a good heart.

Views on "Heroes"

Leon is among the many jaded individuals who's outlook on life makes him an "anti-hero". But unlike many others like him, who disrespect "capes", Leon has the up most respect for the virtuous heroes in Paragon. While he and "Golden Age" heroes tend to not see eye to eye, he respects them and admires them--to the point of getting angry at anyone who badmouths a "cape". Because of his service to his country and planet, some of the "Golden Age" heroes hold a level of respect for him as well. After all, for a completely normal human he is capable of going toe to toe with some of the toughest super villains out there.

Weapons/Devices

Because Leon has no super powers, at all, he uses a heavily customized rifle and various devices to give him an edge.

M16H Assault Rifle

The M16H Assault rifle is a distant cousin in the AR-15 family tree of firearms. It's a customized weapon that while may share similarities to other rifles, but was designed specifically for combating metahumans of all origins. Even the bullets are custom made for the specifications of this gun. The idea behind it's design was to have an "all purpose" firearm capable of fighting at all ranges. Designed to fire burst and full auto shots while in mid range, yet have enough similarities to a high-velocity weapon to do successful sniping.

The only downside to this weapon is that it needs more maintenance then normal rifles and occasionally certain parts need to be replaced regularly because of wear.

HawkEye Aiming System

A custom version of a rather common gadget seen being used by Paragon heroes. Instead of simply relying on aiming lasers it, in fact, gives a video feedback to Hawkeye's artificial right eye. Because the image is digital and has several filters it increases his perception. It also capable of digital zoom and allows Leon to operate without the aid of a spotter, though to a limited degree. It is also capable of infrared night vision.

???? Optic Camouflage

An advanced optical camo that doesn't require the user to wear a suit. It seems no one but Leon and it's creators know how it works. But, given technology and metahuman super-perception, it doesn't provide perfect invisibility.

Anti-Personnel Land Mines

Many overconfident metahumans and humans tracking Leon often are baited into a mine field. These advanced land mines are designed to recognize the difference between friendlies and hostiles through a combination of laser and optical cameras. They are also are equipped with Optical Camo.

HEAT Combat Knife

A special combat knife made out of a heavy-duty metal that can heat up to high temperatures without melting. Allowing it to cut through most metals and alloys as if they were butter.

Knockout Gas

A special knockout gas strong enough to put most metahumans to sleep.

Leon's Musical Theme's

Character History

Leon Hawkeye is one of my RP characters from my days of RPing on AOL, and being a character who I enjoy RPing has appeared in several different RP groups. The original Leon was Leon "Hawkeye" Hayakawa from the Kanji Theme RP. A private RP group that at it's prime had over 20 members. Although his last name is Japanese the character was Caucasian. The reason for the Japanese surname was because it was an "anime based" RP group and therefore had the "Japanese White Guy" factor in play. The name, Hawkeye, was his code name in the METSU Special Forces. It was given to him because of the similarity to his surname and how he specialized in Sniping. Although a top notch Sniper he could pilot mecha and was deadly with a knife and pistol.

Eventually he'd move his way into other RPs as a mercenary/bounty hunter named Leon Hawkeye. While based on the same character his background was former military sniper, turned police sniper, turned Private Investigator/mercenary. While involved in a short lived RP the character explored more of the "Hawkeye" characters personal life. Revealing little known facts which became universal for all "Hawkeye" characters. Though several changes were made to the Hawkeye personality. This version of Hawkeye was a tad less militant and more "rough around the edges".

Several things remain universal for the Hawkeye characters. Generally they all have a military background that explains their exceptional skill in Sniping. Have a daughter who's name varies, in some cases she had passed away along with his wife prior to the events in the RP. Live a solitary life in an apartment. Own dogs (either a Welsh-Corgi named "Erik" or the Basset Hound "Duke" depending if it's the younger or older versions of Hawkeye) that are generally taken care of by a nameless neighbor. And are all horrible cooks with an addiction to instant food.
