Character Background

Early History

Maxine Fortier grew up in an orphanage on the island called Bloody Bay in the Rogue Isles. Abandoned by her mother shortly after being born, Maxine grew up never knowing who her parents were and hating the rigid rules of the nuns who ran the orphanage. When the Shivan asteroids struck the island, she used the chaos as cover for leaving Bloody Bay by stowing away on a departing fishing trawler. Maxine eventually made her way to the slums of Mercy Island where she used money stolen from the orphanage funds to buy food. Once the money was gone however, Maxine resorted to stealing and robbing to survive. In time she would join up with several other street urchins running around Mercy and together formed a loosely-knit gang; working together for mutual survival.

As Maxine grew to adulthood, years of living without adequate nutrition and exposure to disease had seriously stunted her physical development; making her smaller then a woman her age. Regardless of this Maxine had developed a reputation on the streets as being tough and determined to survive no matter the odds. On many occasions she'd had run-ins with the law in the Rogue Isles, both from Lord Recluses' police forces and from Longbow, the militant wing of Freedom Corps. Some Longbow agents she encountered would try to convince her to give up her life of crime and turn over a new leaf; but she ignored their rhetoric, knowing they would never know the hardships she'd encountered in her life.

As she and her gang continued to run around the streets of the Rogue Isles, their crimes also grew until they'd soon developed into a gang of experienced thieves; fencing what they'd stolen from others. It would be during one such burglary that Maxine Fortier's life would take a decidedly different turn.

Unfriendly Encounters

One day, one of Maxine's street contacts told her about a warehouse at the docks in Port Oakes recently purchased by an outside company that may contain some valuable wares for them to fence for big money. Never one to back down from a job, Maxine and her gang took the job and that evening broke into the warehouse to discover crates full of unusual equipment. They also encountered the new owner of the warehouse and his private security force; who captured and detained Maxine and her gang. The owner of the warehouse called himself The Middleman, a power broker who specialized in obtaining superpowers for those willing to pay the price; thanks to a growing number of scientists under his employ. He had recently decided to open up shop in the Isles so as to present his criminal clients in the Isles with the goods his company offered.

But before he could begin offering the power development processes his company had created, he needed some test subjects. And as fate would have it, he decided that Maxine and her gang would be perfect for the task. The Middleman's scientists began immediately on the other members of the gang first, subjecting them to painful chemical and radiation treatments meant to trigger the development of superhuman abilities. From her holding cell, Maxine could hear the screams of pain from her friends; many of whom she'd known for years. When the last of the screams had finally died down, the scientists then came for Maxine. As she was strapped into a deadly looking device, the scientist coldly told her that he was going to attempt to enhance her body's cellular structure using an experimental steroid and radiation treatment he was developing. After she was injected with several chemicals, the doctor then activated the device which bombarded her with powerful energies.

Whether it was a result of the treatment or the triggering of a latent meta-gene in her DNA, Maxine's body responded in incredible fashion to the process as her body was painfully and radically transformed by the treatment she underwent. Within mere minutes of beginning the process, Maxine Fortier whet from being small and sickly into a towering Amazonian-like woman; now far taller, muscular than a woman her age. The painful transformation had driven Maxine into a blind rage as she easily broke free of her restraints and smashed her way past The Middleman's scientists and guards and out of the warehouse; fleeing into Port Oakes.

New Beginnings

After about a day, the pain of her change had finally subsided and Maxine was able to see first hand what had been done to her. Her new appearance and powers both shocked and amazed her. No longer was she just a scrawny little nobody, she was now someone who people would take notice of. Remembering her friends who were captured and also experimented on, Maxine returned to the warehouse, only to find the Middleman's operation had moved and the warehouse now empty; her friends no where to be found. Believing them to be dead, Maxine decided to abandon her old life and use her new abilities to pull bigger crimes and pull herself out of the slums of the Isles and into the big time as a supervillain. Using the money her gang had stashed away, she had a costume made for her and took the appropriate moniker of Power House as her new codename. She then began to make a name for herself in the Isles as a powerful gun-for-hire; taking any job that required muscle to get it done.

She also used her new-found strength to get back at those she had felt slighted her in the past, particularly the rival gangs of Mercy Isle and the Longbow Agents who she saw as sanctimonious hypocrites. Soon, Power House had gained a reputation as a violent bully and began rising up on Longbow's most wanted list. After a very brief stint in a Longbow Jail (in which she broke out and severely injured several agents in the process of her escape), Power House turned her attention to bigger crimes which would guarantee a bigger payout.

Joining the League of Sinister Intent

It was during an unexplained supernatural event in the Rogue Isles that Power House would encounter Witchazel and Bejeweling of the The League of Sinister Intent, a Villaingroup that was known as arch-enemies of the Golden Age Heroes; a Supergroup in Paragon City. Impressing them with her power and ferocity, as well as seeing a need for someone on the team with her attributes, Witchazel offered Power House a place in the League, which Maxine readily accepted. She then accompanied them on the League's mission against the GAH when they attempted to destroy them by leading the GAH into three traps. Power House made her debut in a tremendous fight against the hero Hyperion Shield, whom she assaulted with her powerful physical might. However, during the fight, Maxine had her first true taste of defeat as the hero was able to subdue her without injuring her. Enraged by the humiliation of being brushed aside, Power House flew into a powerful rage; intending to kill Hyperion Shield; but thanks to the timely intervention of the Young Gods member Plip, she was knocked unconscious by a powerful blast of electricity.

Power House was teleported away from the scene of the battle when Baggage attacked the building. Since the battle, Power House has made a full recovery and has resumed her mission to be the toughest brute in all of the Isles. In her quest, she has single handedly defeated numerous heroes in Paragon City and the Rogue Isles including such individuals as Mynx, Back Alley Brawler and Infernal.

Personality

For most of her life, Maxine Fortier grew up with a serious inferiority complex due to her stunted height and build. She would lash out at anyone who she thought was being condescending or threatening to her. After receiving her new powers, her attitude changed drastically; becoming proud and confident, seeing herself as being superior to others. After joining the League of Sinister Intent, Power House's attitudes changed further as she now uses the League's resources to truly develop herself into more than just a "giant, buxom brute". She is even currently studying to obtain her GED.

Powers and Abilities

Thanks to cellular augmentation through radiation, Power House possesses immense superhuman physical strength. She is easily capable of lifting over 100 tons, but she also engages in rigorous weight training to develop her muscles; thus her strength levels are steadily increasing.

Power House's muscles produce considerably less fatigue toxins than the muscles of an ordinary human, granting her superhuman levels of stamina.

Power House's body is also highly resistant to physical injury. She can withstand high caliber bullets, temperature extremes, falls from great heights, and severe blunt force trauma without sustaining injury.

Power House also possesses extensive experience in street-fighting techniques.
