A Few Words From Reag's Creator

When I created Reag, I wanted to break the mold a bit. Instead of created ye old supervillain, with a tragic past and criminal insanity, I wanted to make a character that was completely normal in almost every way. However, as being completely normal is boring, and so I made Reag with a prototype Crey stealth suit (It was that or brawl everything to death) and an insane fear of being poor. I felt this was the easiest way for me to give my character some motivation for the actions he persues, without forcing him into the more stereotypical hero / villain archetypes. Excluding this, Reag is about as normal as it gets in the Isles (One bullet is all it takes for him to die). Compared to other toons, RPing Reag is a breath of fresh air, and is probobly why I've stuck with him for so long.

But I ran into several problems with Reag. The first, and biggest, problem was 'Why is he a villain?'. I needed a reason my character was completely normal, yet at the same time a evil doer. This leads us to our first topic,

Reag's History

Jacob Gear was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. Tel Aviv is like the New York of the country, being one of the largest cities there. Tall buildings, loud streets, and a picture perfect beach are just some of the features of this city. However, this is a moot point, as this story does not take place in Tel Aviv. Jacob's family moved back to the States when he was 10. New Orleans, to be exact.

What followed was about thirteen uneventful years. By superhero standards, nothing of interest happened. Jacob finished high school and was attending collage. However, one day, something interesting did happen to him. Although nothing as exciting as falling into nuclear waste, it was the point were Jacob could trace his history as a villain to.

It was a dark and stormy night. Or at least that's how he remembers it. It was here that he met her. And you know what italics means.

One Month of Love

She was the beginning, indirectly causing Jacob to become evil. It all started with a casual evening in the local bar. Thats where they met. The next month passed in a blur for him. To this day, he cant remember many of the details. All he knows is for one month, he had the best girlfriend. Ever. But nothing stays perfect. Ever.

A midnight walk with her. That was the beginning of the end. Who would of guessed that she was cheating on him? Who would of guessed that Jacob's 'replacement' would be a Hero? Who would of guessed that they would just run into each other, and that the 'Hero' would punch Jacob's lights out for being with his girl?

Screw It. Im Leaving

After the initial shock (and black eye) of the whole 'Hero Incident' , Jacob decided that it was probably best if he just left town. The loss of his girl friend had left him devastated. It wasn't long till he found himself in front of an airplane terminal, faced with a choice. Paragon or the Isles? He left his fate up to a coin toss. A simple way to decide a choice that would determine his future.

Tails. The Isles.

It wasn't a long plane ride. But it was an important one. He was going to the Isles so that he could think. Thinking is good. Sadly, all he thought about was her. When he finally landed in Sharkhead, Jacob came to a startling realization. He was a damn idiot. Sure, he had lost his girl. But everyone goes through tough patches of life. Also, Jacob had forgotten to plan ahead. Have you ever had one of thoughts moments when you think: "God. I'm stupid."? J. experienced this, but tenfold. Trapped in Sharkhead with no form of income, he had to make a very hard choice. Starve to death on the streets or work in the mines to try and buy himself a plane ticket home.

Reag coming to terms with his idiocy

Welcome To Isle Life

So our villain finally came to realize that his IQ is smaller than his shoe size. The next two months were an utter hell for him. Wake up at six am, work till midnight, sleep, repeat. The obscenely small amount of money he did make was all spent on instant ramen soups. While not preforming manual labor, Jacob had a lot of time on his hands to think. He couldn't believe that the world would let a place like this exist. Why didn't the UN or Paragon shut it down? Hatred seeped through him, slowly corrupting his soul. Fortunately for him, the spinning decent into a murdering psychopath was halted midway. His dad had found him and sent him a care package: A new watch and a set of dark red sunglasses. Both had R.E.A.G. engraved on them.

So, This Is What It's Like To Be 'Super'?

There was a package at the front door to Jacobs 'house'. He studied it carefully before opening it. A set of sunglasses and a small watch slid out into Jacobs hand. After examining both for a moment, he put the sunglasses on a cardboard box (dining room table), but kept the watch in his hands. He looked at it carefully, taking in the engraving on the back. The watch was a small silver one, the cheap kind that you could buy almost anywhere. Jacob tossed up and down several times in his hand. It didn't feel right. It was just too heavy, about twice what it should have been. Then again, it wasn't everyday you got a new watch. Hell, he could probably have pawned it off for some serious cash. Jacob put it on and started pressing buttons to try and adjust the time. The desk in front of him exploded.

After a long night of vengeance, Reag, not Jacob, returned home. His hand was covered in blood, but he didn't care. Reag would just go swimming in the sea later. He took off his watch, set it down next to his bed, and picked up the package. As he turned it over in his hands, and leaving bloody fingerprints, Reag wondered who in the world had sent it. I mean, who the hell mails a random construction worker a piece of advanced technology? He glanced at the address it was sent from. It was the Crey Labs his dad used to worked for pre-retirement. Reag's old man had come through for him.

Reag: The Villain (Psychological Breakdown)

Despite the fact that his first day as a villain was a killing spree, Reag/Jacob is (are?) not true evil. After taking revenge on his former employers, Reag turn to the street. However, the habits of two months way below the poverty line die hard. He (they?) had developed an obsession with money. But it was more than just casual greed, it was an utter phobia of being poor again. Sometimes having to go days without food can do that too you.

This is where Jacob/Reag the villain emerges. Not after the brutal slaughter of several construction site guards (they deserved it anyway), but when he starts to do almost anything for money. And food.

The Evil Life (Still Character History)

Despite having a powerful combat device, Reag was still broke. No matter how hard you can punch, food is still required. The answer was simple. Money. It was pointless to rob a bank in the Isle. Reag wanted money after all. After about half an hour of deliberating, Reag decided that it would probably pay well to do some contract work for the Arachnos. Of course this work would be dangerous. He would have to pull of multiple assassination jobs and the like. But money (and Reag's belly) called.

Lets see. First job. Set fire to a warehouse full of longbow weapons. That doesn't sound too bad. Ow! And its in Paragon City too!

End

And thats it folks. All of Reags RP history. Everything else thats happened to him I dont classify as history. If you want to learn more (like was it /really/ a warehouse of longbow weapons?) your going to have to find Reag and ask him. And I will tell you this, he has changed a /lot/ since his history has ended.

Associates and Affiliations

(( Still in progress ))

Unseen Scarlet - Nicole. Kaige. Of all Reag's associations, Scarlet's could merit it's own section. He met her in the D near the start of his villain hood, back when he was still just /barely/ scrapping a living. A short conversation and a hit list later, it could be said that she saved his life. Not that Kaige (at the time, Nicole) cared. In truth, Reag is confused about how he feel about her. Kaige almost always disregard his advice, and gets herself into trouble. And then there was the mock fight incident, where she almost purposefully decapitated him. At one point, he even joined the Arachnos to protect her. Sadly, he still doesn't know that he was manipulated into joining. Reag honestly doesn't know why he still hangs around her. But the truth is that she's all he has...

Bane Spider Tau - Things between Tau and Reag have always been bad. It started when he first met Tau, through Kaige. With in ten minutes, he had threatened to kill Reag's family. That kind of thing can really ruin a friendship between people. The fact that he joined the Arachnos at one point to protect Kaige from him at one point doesn't make things easier. Put simply, given half a chance, Reag would decapitate Tau in an instant.

Rapport - A friend of Kaige and a friend of Reag's. Kinda.

Fifth Sin

Dr. Kazz

Breaker - Reag was once assigned to kill Breaker. It didn't end well.

Lyrics To Live By

Authors Note: Reag history was originally based on the song below. Now? Not so much...

When I was young

I watched the cars

When I was older

I drank in bars

When I was young

I chewed the leaves

When I was older

I drank with thieves

I found a love

She gave me dreams

She left me drunk

In New Orleans

So cold and lonely

So all alone

I wished my heart

Was made of stone

I took the cold bright needle

I used it as a sword

My eyes have seen the glory of

The coming of the lord

I burned across the delta

I swam across the ford

My eyes have seen the glory of

The coming of the lord

When I was a young man

Standing on this road

My empty belly

An aching hole

An old man said to me

Kid don't you know

That it's the same

Wherever you go

I gambled in graveyards

I won against the odds

With the saints

And with the saviors

With the maggots and the gods

I cursed the things they showed me

I could never see again

And the howling of the wind at night

I wrote upon the rain

I found the thing

For which I prayed

And came back home

To the USA

With a heart of stone

And now I know

That its the same

Wherever you go
