Seiken
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
'Seiken' is the infamous talking sword used by the hero, Luficia. It is extremely rare to see them ever apart.
Who is He?
Unbeknownst to many people, Seiken wasn't always a talking sword... he used to be a human being. His full name is Emlyn Engel and he was born on September 5th, 1926. He grew up in Paragon City with a wealthy family and had a strange fascination for the mystical world. When completing his education, he teamed with his close friend, Julius, to collect different mystical artifacts as well as translating different magic books. It became his field of study, becoming an archaeology in unearthing such artifacts.
On a particular day in the 1940s, they were able to locate a very strange book. It was unlike other spell books they've encountered and translating the text revealed disturbing secrets. While Emlyn was content to lock it away, Julius was tempted to test what it knew. The book's magic took its toll on Julius' mind and the man snapped into insanity. He stole the book and fled to reign havoc on Paragon City.
This was Emlyn's heroic calling.
Since he knew so much about magic already, he was able to practice and perfect from his assortment of spell books he picked up in his archaeology career. While his hero name is unknown, he completed many feats and assisted other heroes in his day. Before retiring his cape, he was able to put Julius down for the last time and see him arrested for his crimes.
Since then, he married his sweetheart, Rosie Steinheart, and settled down in the city. They bore a son, Edward, whom followed in his father's footsteps and both opened up an archaeology company that dug and studied ancient or magical relics. They watched his son fall in love with Rachael Howe and marry. His family expanded when they were blessed with three granddaughters: Felicia, Tia and Emily.
Unfortunately, Emlyn had forgotten about that book...
It had made its way back into Julius' hands. He snuck out of jail and studied further of the book's secrets. From it, Julius hacked out his revenge for the humiliation years ago. One by one, the family was murdered although Felicia was able to escape. In a cruel twist, he managed to keep both Emily and Emlyn alive. He killed Emlyn personally but sealed his soul in a special piece of stone and then bounding it to a sword. Forced to watch but unable to do anything about it, Julius used the books magics and an ancient demon to be fused into his beloved granddaughter - a process that could not be fully completed in a single day. It needed ten years for the ritual to be complete.
So Julius locked the pair in a tomb under Gemini Park in Galaxy City, knowing the family name would be tarnished when Emily woke up. She would be the perfect killing machine... the perfect revenge.
That revenge did not come to pass as planned. Emlyn had figured out the magical capabilities of the crystal he was enslaved in. He had to wait for over nine years before he could strike. Before it could be finished, he latched almost all of the magic within the blade to form a psychic link with Emily to force the ritual to end. The cost of such a feat was of her granddaughter's memories as well as permanent damage to some parts of her mind. It was enough to wake her up and in tact... although the ritual had finished 80% of the way.
Even as the disoriented girl stumbled out of the tomb with the blade in hand, he could not bare to tell her the truth... not yet. So a new identity had to be made.
Thus, Seiken came to be.
Personality
Well, if your going to be stuck in a sword for all eternity, may as well have fun with it!
Thats the logic Emlyn came up with when he first appeared on the heroic scene with Luficia. He plays the 'role' very well. As Seiken, he tends to be very rude and not afraid to speak his mind. He hates being ignored during introductions and likes to insult anything in plain sight. He particularly enjoys insulting Arachnos and villains the most. He is the reason why many Arachnos try to destroy the sword every time the duo are fighting on the streets. He has a weakness for beautiful women, immediately flirting with them or even laying down a perverted(and inappropriate) joke. If a man is feminine enough, Seiken has been known to mistaken them for women and hit on them as well.
Thanks to Doctor Crom and his experiments, he has a huge fear of doctors and scientists.
Thats only as 'Seiken.' it really isn't the true person at all... only a persona. Emlyn is really a very wise elderly man who is very good at appraising magical artifacts or sensing out different magic in the area. His knowledge is vast and is the reason why Luficia knows as much as she does. He is also a very faithful man, mourning the loss of his wife even to this day and speaking fondly of her.
