Sylanna

Short. Purple-haired. Bubbly. Why is her hair purple? That’s an excellent question, and one which Sylanna must field on an almost constant basis.

In actual fact, hardly anyone’s bothered asking her about the mysterious story behind her purple hair. If they did, they would likely receive something akin to the truth: “It seemed like a nifty idea at the time.”

Description

She has a youthful face most accustomed to smiling. She remains in excellent shape — with a nuclear reactor metabolism like hers, it’s not difficult. She has a good figure that’s even been called “shapely.”

When asked for comment, Sam simply glared coldly and made an oblique reference to sulfur pits.

Costume

You honestly want a description of why she wears every single outfit she wears? You must be kidding. You want some deep, profound statement about the origins of her clothes? Some hidden meaning, some great depth? You must be mad.

When she’s on duty she generally goes for something with a bit of flash and flair. If she’s going to be running around being heroic she may as well look good doing it, right? Her most recent outfit, predominantly a tight-fitting white and yellow top and little bottoms (Sylanna: “They’re NOT PANTIES!” Sam: “Oh, god.”) came out of a spontaneous clothing decision at what was called a “Silver Age” party.

She wasn’t entirely clear on what that was all about, just that it had to do with old comic books. It was, most importantly, an opportunity to dress in something interesting. She made the costume on a lark and later discovered she liked it. She says it makes her feel sexy and “woo.”

The meaning of “woo” in that context is not entirely clear.

When she’s off duty, she can be found in any number of outfits from the closets she has appropriated at Sam’s house in Founder’s Falls, something Sam continues to bemoan. He was once rummaging for a pair of shorts when he pulled out a lacy thong that he pointed was “definitely not mine.”

Back to the civvies. They can be very casual shirt and jeans, or a colorful dress, shorts and a halter-top or anything else she feels like wearing.

Sam, however, would like to point out that “these are not my bras and how in the hell did they get in here?”

Powers

Sylanna possesses the mutant ability to (cue 1950s public service announcement music) harness the wonderful power of radiation!

Although she would struggle to provide a detailed, scientific description of her abilities, she’s able to manipulate matter on a cellular level, the end result being either helpful or harmful to the recipient.

Empathy

First and foremost, Sylanna is a healer. It’s a title she bears proudly, and she gets confused when she encounters other heroes who react angrily and defensively to being called such.

Her empathy talents allow her to “sense” a person’s injuries, and then to channel her ability to generate radiation to repair physical damage to living tissue. This healing power has proven effective against inorganic, robotic entities as well, provided the entity has a consciousness Sylanna can sense. Full sentience does not appear to be necessary, as she has been able to heal animals as well as people.

Radiation Emission

While she does not possess near the direct destructive force of some of her compatriots, she can direct radiation blasts at her foes, to both harm them and in turn make them more susceptible to harm from others.

She is also an effective walking microwave oven. “Here, gimme that Jiffy Pop! You’re gonna love this! *BOMF*”

She will make high-spirited references to the potential sterility/infertility side effect of radiation exposure (“No more baby baddies!”). Whether she indeed makes villains sterile has never been confirmed, and could very well just be heroic banter.

Additional Powers

Sylanna is an excitable person, and she is able to channel powerful waves of radiation (harmlessly, she says) in order to propel herself along the ground at superspeeds. Her speed in the air isn’t nearly as great, although she is able to hover and move slowly through the air with considerable maneuverability.

Abilities

She is an enthusiastic, but inept, cook.

Weaknesses and Limitations

While she can be fearless in a fight, she is ineffective as a front-line combatant, as her powers are more geared toward aiding others.

(( Weaknesses and limitations? She's an Emp/Rad Defender. Do I need to paint you a picture? ))

Character History

To hear her tell it, Sylanna is a Paragon City native who was at one time a promising medical student. Upon discovering her mutant ability to heal others, she said “heck with the boring lab coats” and hit the streets of Paragon to do good, help people, and drink some good coffee.

Left homeless after a 2006 attack on her old supergroup base, she – along with Dottie Quinn – moved into Samuel Temple’s building in the southwestern part of Founder’s Falls. Ask Sam about it, sometime. He’ll be happy to talk about it — if happy is the right word.
