The Alien Depths...

JWIP

Personality

In a single word - naieve. Var is an eccentric, curious and young exile from an extremely xenophobic race who has happened to find himself allied with an Empire comprised of several different species. The result is an influx of new information, new knowledge and cultures to be learned, studied and adapted and generally anything his knowledge hungry soul could ever ask for.

Due to his alien nature Var comes across as strange. To some he is childlike, playful and young and meaning no harm whereas to others this seems to be an utterly sinister and cold alien facade. What is known is that his emotions are much like the tides, capable of changing at a whim and highly volatile. And when combined with a psionic mastery such as his very, very dangerous.

Powers & Abilities

Psionic Mastery

Like all Mal'yr Var is highly psionic...however, in his case his psionic capabilities are above and beyond all bar the elders of that race. Whereas the average Mal'yr has a psionic potential that makes the strongest human psions seem like candles in comparison to their bonfire Var eclipses his own kin just as much.

Everything he does is psionic in nature. Telekinesis enables flight and aggressive action in the form of concentrated pulses to stun, throw back and batter his foes. Cryokinesis is used to hamper and hinder foes, as well as support allies through shielding them in manifested ice and preserving them as they take injuries. Telepathy allows him to maintain constant communication with his allies, heightening their awareness of their surroundings, as well as his own.

Finally these psionic talents also create a sort of psychometabolism, enhancing Var's recovery and regnerative abilities, as well as the speed of his actions and reactions.

Mal'yr Traits

Other than his enhanced psionic capabilities Var displays physical traits in common with the Mal'yr as a whole. His body is adapted to cope with extremes of pressure and temperature with ease, making such methods of attack or hinderance all but useless against him. Furthermore he is highly intelligent, with a learning capability that exceeds normal human capacities and an ability to absorb knowledge at an astounding rate.

Finally he has the standard, almost-immortal lifespan of the Mal'yr, with no known upper limit at which they die outside of unnatural causes. It should be noted that even at his age, which dates beyond most human civilisations he is still considered very young amongst his kin.

The Black City - Home of the Mal'yr

The Black City, Var's 'former' home is the primary residence of the Mal'yr, a jagged scar in the deepest parts of the world's oceans. It is here that the forgotten children of Dagon live, exiles from the surface world following the rise of Gaia and the birth of the Gods. It is a cold, cruel and alien place with geometries that defy logic, powered by the hidden essences of sleeping stellar nightmares that are worshipped as gods.

The Mal'yr are highly xenophobic and as such no living surface dweller has seen the city in its true nature. All information that has been gleamed has come from the survivors of the defector Castes following a brutal civil war and an alliance with Atlantis itself. The Mal'yr exist in a strict culture, ruled by faith in their unholy gods and a strict structure of castes and sects as set by a Council of Elders. At the head of this council sits The Voice of Dagon, the oldest surviving Mal'yr, head of his particular Sect and the head of the Church of Dagon as a whole. Long ago ten seperate Sects existed within the black city though three split off, their natures turning out much different from the bitter and hateful creed preached by the Voice.

A brutal Civil War followed and the exiles fled, seeking refuge with the recently arrived Atlanteans who had the misfortune to sink into the heart of things.

Atlantis - Home of the Exiles

Atlantis has become the new home of Var and others of the exiled Sects since the civil war that tore the Mal'yr apart thousands of years ago. There, amongst the peoples of the golden city they are viewed with suspicion and fear, for the horrors inflicted upon the culture by the Mal'yr when the city first sank were great indeed.

Var and the other exiles have found themselves at home and well adapted within the archives and mystic quarters, their abilities to absorb, understand and organise the vast libraries of knowledge proving a valuable asset, as well as their experience from their long lived existences. To the Atlanteans these Dark Ones have become welcome, though tales of their kin are still told to frighten children into behaving.

Before the Sundering

Prior to the Sundering of the Mal'yr Empire, Var was but one of many servants of the myriad Sects within the Black City. His particular Sect was dedicated to the acquisition and furthering of knowledge and was one of the few that was not overtly destructive in their nature. For, just as their god had two sides to his idenity (the Eye of Knowledge, the Maw of Madness) so too did the society of the Mal'yr.

Yet this was not to last. The Sects that were peaceful in their nature and dedicated to the Eye were outnumbered, seven to three and those dedicated to the Maw were far more aggressive and warlike in their nature. Civil war soon broke out, brother turning on brother as under the direct command of The Voice those of the Maw slaughtered the forces of the Eye to take total control of the Mal'yr.

The Exile

The saga however, did not end with the war. Hopelessly outnumbered and outmatched the two surviving Sects fled from the Black City, fighting a losing war and being forced further and further away from their city and further towards the hungry Abyss. Though the Mal'yr had potential psionic capabilities they would not survive or endure when left out in the open. Their bodies were physically frail and the myriad predators of the deep would make quick meals of stragglers without issue.

At this time fate smiled upon the exiles...on the surface world a great calamity fell upon Atlantis, dragging the city beneath the waves into Poseidon's embrace. Such an action caused an immediate ripple, shockwaves crashing into the Black City and causing damage to its refined structures. Momentarily distracted from their quarry the Mal'yr forces of the Maw fell back, leaving the exiles to their fate though the Council knew full well what would come next.

The Exiles fled, in numbers toward the sinking city of Atlantis. And there they sought but one thing - sanctuary. They would betray the xenophobic ways of their kind to outsiders simply to survive.
