Already a cripplingly shy bookworm, Alice Carson's self-esteem was further undermined by her humiliation over her new appearance following an encounter with a cursed onyx cat's-head amulet. She accepted the trinket as collateral when a mysterious visitor convinced her to loan him a rare text that was not in fact for sale at her father's occult bookstore. She fled in panic to Paragon City rather than admit her mistake to a family with whom she was already on thin ice.

Here, she has found a safe, quiet, and off-the-radar home with the League of Misfits, accepting a position as the Misfit Mansion's head librarian. While the eccentric band of heroes is often a lot for the timid and inexperienced occasional hero to handle, she at least has the sanctuary of her library, where she rules with an iron fist.
