William Patterson was on the fast track. Already for his employer, NeoTek Laboratories, he had made several developments and discoveries. Key on a few patents, he had made the company millions in his short term with the company. After sudden illness had struck his mentor and supervisor, he had been promoted and now headed a team of other hotshot engineers, scientists, and theorists.
During his off time, he got far away from the lab, indulging in hiking, backpacking, and other such endeavors. During a spelunking trip, he was temporarily separated from his group. In a chamber never seen by man, almost a man-sized geode, he found several odd crystals that immediately reacted to his light. Intrigued he gather several pounds of samples.
Back at the lab, when examined, the crystals were found to be EXTREMELY unique. Affected by both light and sound, they absorbed and amplified energy. Within a short time, his team had determined the crystals represented a new source of power. More samples were obtained, and his team started work on applications of what they called CrysTek. A line of batteries were in the works that could revolutionize mobile gear, outlasting the gear itself. And electric cars were on the drawing board as well that wouldn't need recharging but every few months.
It was then that they were attacked. Rikti forces invaded his lab, searching for his advanced works and crystal supplies. They weren't successful, but many in the lab were injured, and two didn't survive the attack. This struck Will greatly. He was determined to fight back.
Using the various CrysTek products of his group, he put together his first prototype CrysTek power suit, registering as a hero. Equipped with a nano-ceramic weave, the base suit provided comfort and some degree of protection. Gauntlets were made that projected energy in force blasts of various intensities. Later, thrust effect boots were added to provide flight. The flight was ramped up radically in power by later designs providing early speeds of 65 mph or more.
Almost immediately after registering as a hero, he made contact with Galvanized Gal, and joined The Vigilants group. He's since worked with other groups, including the Midnighters.
