Story
Matthew Westbrook was an eight year veteran of CSIS specializing in infiltration surveillance. CSIS assigned him to observe and gather intelligence on a high-tech smuggling ring suspected of stealing and moving weapons grade uranium and biohazardous agents out of the U.S. using Canada as a conduit to the international black market. Unfortunately, the smuggling ring captured, drugged and took Matt away. The suspected smugglers were really a covert operations group for Crey Industries. They took him to a hidden research lab in Paragon City and tortured him to within an inch of his life.
But Matt refused to cooperate, so Crey Industries found another use for him. He would be a test subject for their experimental gene therapy. The therapy would alter selected sets of genes and activate latent mutant powers inherent in every human being but, to date, every test previous subject died within two weeks. However, Matt did not die. He was the first successful test subject and now, human guinea pig. Poked and prodded, test after excrutiating test, he was subjected to myriad experiments as his mutant powers slowly emerged.
But the process was more effective than Crey researchers ever expected. His mutant powers increased faster and greater than they thought possible. Matt escaped from his cell, and in a blind rage, destroyed half the lab in a giant explosion, killing a dozen researchers in the process. He escaped and fled to an isolated community in northern British Columbia where he struggled with the anguish and guilt of the researchers' deaths. When Matt gathered his courage and resolve, he contacted a handful of Canadian heroes and called for their help in gathering evidence to bring down Crey industries (while discreetly collecting evidence to assist in his own defense).
Stemming from his previous life as a CSIS infiltration and survellance specialist, Mirage is both a excellent martial artist and stealth operative. With his mutant ability to distort, amplify and manipulate light, he can: bend visible light around him, rendering himself nvisible. Create static 3D holographic images. Focus and amplify light into a bright flash that temporarily blinds opponents. Convert his personal body mass into pure photons for a split second (for line of sight teleportation). For added mobility, Mirage's costume is equipped witha durable "glider cape" that he uses to glide through the air.
