Who was Xanatos?
Xanatos was an alien of unknown origin that arrived on Earth in the year 1901. He was sent to earth by the demi-god Galarius to see if the planet was suitable for destruction. Finding intelligent life on Earth, Xanatos decided to become a superhero and protect the planet until his master arrived to see planet Earth for himself.
In 1960 Galarius returned. He turned Xanatos on his newfound superhero friends, and set about destroying the planet. With the help of many allies Xanatos eventually defeated Galarius and sent the demi-god packing. He has not been seen since.
From that day on, Xanatos became a steadfast protector of planet earth. He established such supergroups as The Defenders of Paragon, The Peacekeepers, and The Old Guard. He was able to control the element of ice, having shown great imagination and willpower with the ice constructs he used to fight crime, and he was a highly skilled leader and military tactician. While old fashioned, possibly even golden age at heart, Xanatos was every bit a hero for the modern world. Not just because Paragon always needed heroes, not because he'd been doing it that much longer than most, but because he was every bit a living legend up.
Xanatos died in 2012 at the hands of Rularuu, in an event that has become known as "The Battle for the Multiverse".
Powers & Abilities
Cold Manipulation
Xanatos was able to lower his body temperature without causing harm to himself, reaching minus 105°F within a few tenths of a second. He was able to freeze any moisture in the air around him into unusually hard ice to form ice-slides and various projectiles and shields. He could travel rapidly along these ice-slides or ice-bridges by causing ice to form rapidly beneath and behind his feet, pushing him along the slick surface. He was also able to summon moisture from the air and create a flood.
Xanatos was immune to sub-zero temperatures and had thermal vision: the ability to detect objects visually by how much heat the objects generate.
According to the laws of thermodynamics, cold is defined as the absence of heat. Therefore, Xanatos did not actually emanate cold, but rather absorbed and dispelled heat. Since heat is a form of energy, Xanatos's powers could be defined as a psionic ability to manipulate thermal energy by reducing the kinetic energy of atoms.
Leadership
Through years of constant heroism, and an active involvement in several wars (both planetary and intergalactic) Xanatos had become something of a military tactician, with his fellow superheroes often following his orders in battle. A notable leader, heroes had been known to fight on despite their wounds when in his presence. He had an almost empathetic link to those that served under him. Xanatos was incredibly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, often taking down foes whose strength, size, or superpowers greatly exceeded his own.
Character History
1901-2002
1901: Xanatos is sent to earth at the wish of his master and creator, the demi-god Galarius. The exact date of this is unknown but is estimated at around 1901.
- 1930: Formation of The Cosmic Crew. An anonymous hero known only as The Golden Knight chairs a team built on the principles of the American Dream. The Cosmic Crew don't become an official supergroup until 1937 however, due to the Citizen Crime Fighting Act.
- 1933-1939: Xanatos Lives in the Antarctic, becoming something of an urban legend in the process. His Fortress of Ice was also established during this time, and is still there to this day.
- 1940: The Fortress of Ice is besieged by a supervillain known as The Tsar. Xanatos defeats the piston-powered menace, and follows him as he flees to Paragon City. Where, with the aid of a team of heroes known as The Cosmic Crew, Xanatos manages to overcome the villain. Xanatos is invited by The Golden Knight to become a member of The Cosmic Crew. An offer he graciously accepts.
- 1941: Xanatos, along with Greenbeard and Mr. Purple (two members of The Cosmic Crew) was assigned to guard Independence Port at the outbreak of the war. However it was on December 7th that the enemy - a group that would later be known as the Fifth Column - made themselves known. Nazi robots flew through the air and troopers charged the Port En Masse. It was on this day that Xanatos (and the rest of the world) first met the Nazi supervillain Requiem. The Nazi villain killed every hero in the Port - including both of Xanatos's team-mates. Xanatos managed to escape by the skin of his teeth however - making Requiem the only villain he ever fled from. Xanatos made an oath that day never to flee again, no matter what the odds.
- It was only months later that a similar attack took place in Liberty Plaza, but this time the heroes - Xanatos included - were ready. While both sides suffered terrible losses in what was one of Paragons most destructive battles ever - ultimately the Fifth column was driven from the center-stage. Xanatos even managed to confront his old foe Requiem, and with the help of several heroes he was able to send the Nazi supervillain packing.
- 1942-46: The Cosmic Crew (Xanatos included) fight against the Nazi threat. During this time The Cosmic Crew encounter the Mace-wielding superhero known by many as The Imperial. Together they managed to overcome the machiavellian supervillain known only as The Grand Duke from establishing a criminal empire in post-war America.
- 1950: Cosmic Crew member Bright Hammer is killed in action during an epic battle against arch-enemy Requiem on board a military submarine. The submarine grants the heroine a burial at sea, with the vessels weaponry escaping with her murderer. A distraught West Wing, team-mate and lover to Bright Hammer, leaves the team.
- 1960: With two of Earths most powerful countries (The USSR and the USA) in fierce competition - Galarius arrives at Earth in an attempt to destroy the weakened planet. He arrives in Russia - completely unopposed by the Soviet and American Superheroes - busy as they were fighting each other. The Cosmic Crew is dispatched (consisting now of only four members: The Golden Knight, Xanatos, Visor, and Springfist) by the US government to deal with the intergalactic threat. Realizing the state of emergency, Russia also sends one of its superheroes - the enigmatic "Tsar" that Xanatos fought in his youth - to aid The Cosmic Crew against Galarius. The five heroes fight the demi-god, and fail. Visor is killed in the ensuing conflict, with the rest of the heroes barely managing to escape with their lives. Angered, Galarius takes control of Xanatos - increases his powers to their maximum potential - and causes him to freeze the entirety of the Earths atmosphere, causing the planet to enter a stage of suspended animation.
- 1960(cont): The Golden Knight, still conscious due to his suits thermo protection unit, manages to send out the call to on of his oldest allies: The Imperial. Who had fortunately been underground at the time the second Ice Age arrived. Using his advanced invulnerability and power of flight, The Imperial is able to force himself outside of Earths atmosphere, before plummeting downwards towards the USSR. The intense heat from his descension causes the ice around him to melt, allowing him to come face to face with Xanatos. The two heroes fight, before the Imperial is able to appeal to Xanatos's good side. Which, despite the mind control he is subjected to, still shines through. Realizing what he has done, Xanatos reverses the Ice Age. And together with The Imperial, send Galarius packing.
- 1962: At the age of 60, Ernie Wright (also known as SpringFist from The Cosmic Crew) dissappears. His disappearance occurs after a lengthy battle with long-time adversary The Grand Duke.
- 1981-85: Xanatos and The Golden Knight aid The Back Alley Brawler in his fight against drug trafficking in paragon City. As Various street gangs increase in numbers throughout Paragon City, Xanatos makes a promise to the people of Paragon. He was going to clean up the streets.
- 1991: Xanatos saves a young girl by the name of Madalyn Monroe from a near-fatal car crash. Madalyn Monroe would later go on to become the hero known as Ms. Independence, always citing Xanatos as her role model growing up.
- 2000: Xanatos saves a young hero by the Name of Radical Justice during a mafia raid on a Crey Laboratory. After disposing of various button-men and assorted mafioso muscle. The two heroes realize they have one thing in common: Their utter belief in Truth, Justice, and Liberty. The two heroes quickly become friends.
- 2001:With The Cosmic Crew now disbanded (due to there being only 2 members left), Xanatos and Radical Justice form The Defenders of Paragon.
2002
- The Defenders of Paragon go from strength to strength. Tomorrow-Man, Bloodhunt, Collision, Dark Justice, Magestar, Titan, Eagle Eye, Toxin, Wildfire, Garbage-Man, Shadow Star, Shrike, Godly-man, and Maverick Hawk make up the first Defenders roster.
- An interdimensional demon by the name of THOG invades Paragon City with his hoards of Demons. It takes the combined might of The Defenders of Paragon, The Justice Force, The Canadian Shield, and The Knights of Paragon to force him back into his netherrealm. With Team1 remaining in Paragon to protect the severely damaged city. The three teams enter the alternate dimension - easily describable as "hell on earth." The combined might of Paragons most powerful teams manages to bring the demon to his knees, ending his reign of terror.
- After losing his younger brother, Shocstream to cancer, Radical Justice leaves The Defenders of Paragon, repressing into himself and becoming an alcoholic.
- A time-travelling menace known as Sovereign arrives in Paragon with his lackeys (Tactic, The Harbinger, and Cable). He amasses a host of freakshow so large no superhero can stand against them - they assault The Defenders of Paragon's Underground Headquarters and turn it into rubble. Tomorrow-Man is killed in the conflict - his head torn from his shoulders in an epic display of Sovereigns power. Upon hearing of his friends demise, Radical Justice returns to The Defenders of Paragon, Spearheading the assault on a Crey laboratory with Xanatos. United at last, the Defenders are able to overcome their greatest Rival. But suffer heavy casualties in the process, cutting The Defenders of Paragon's roster down to size.
- Using the high amounts of funding he had received over the Years, Xanatos pays for the new team Headquarters. Located just outside of Atlas Park, the Defenders "D" has become quite a monument for tourists when visiting Paragon City.
- Maverick Hawk, Leader of "The Dragoons of Earth", and long time member of The Defenders of Paragon departs Earth for Xenturis. Xenturis is a world that still lives in the mythical ages long past. With Dragoon Knights waging a constant war against the forces of evil. Maverick's arch-nemesis "Deathwing" had risen again, and it was up to the dragonian alliance to put a stop to him. Xanatos is the only superhero present on Xenturis, and through a period of long battles in the countryside, atop mountains, and in the underworld itself: Deathwing is finally overcome.
- At the Age of 103, The Golden Knight (The old leader of The Cosmic Crew) Dons his armor for the last time and flies off into the night, never to be seen again.
2003
- Xanatos and several other heroes, all receive mysterious letters from someone calling himself The Port. The Port needed the heroes to investigate two events on his behalf: The Circle of Thorns kidnapping civilians from a downtown club, and a mysterious ship docked in Independence port. They do so, and are immediately caught up in conflict. With Xanatos finding himself face-to-face with an alternate fire-controlling version of himself. Eventually the two teams overcome their respective problems and meet at the docked ships. The "Dark" Xanatos (Later revealed to be Emperor Xanatos) manages to escape via a golden portal, which the heroes valiantly follow him through. Though many battles then ensued, and the team was finaly united with the Port, the battle spilled out into the strangest place imaginable: The edge of the universe. Using every iota of skill they had, the 9 heroes put a fight to Sovereign - the supervillain responsible for instigating the events that led up to this titanic battle. And through the most painful battle in their lives, manage to stop him destroying the universe.
- Xanatos encounters a hero called Charon - who's ideas are a stark contrast to that of his own. Despite this the two make for a good team, and solve a string of murders implicated towards the Statesman. Discovering that it was nothing more then an old enemy of his trying to set him up, Xanatos and Charon save the day. Although Charon clearly has regrets about certain attributes of Xanatos's personality, the two eventually become close friends.
- During a Christmas party at CITIDEL (The headquarters of The Knights of Paragon.) Xanatos falls for a young heroin by the name of Lady Victoria, known also as The Green Knight . They "Dance the Knight away", to the sound of some of the greatest voices in Paragon.
- After a superpowered hero commits crime on a massive scale. A Pentagon general known as Colonel Palmer declares martial law in Paragon. With the option being either "Surrender or die". Most of Paragons heroes stand up to the military - but all were either disposed of or taken to concentration camps. The various villain groups flee the city. With the Circle of Thorns retreating into Oranbega - a place even the military couldn't enter. Xanatos and eight other heroes manage to either escape or break free from the military. And through an assault on the Pentagon itself, they eventually expose the racist Colonel Palmer as generating the whole incident himself.
- Lady Alexia - One of the most powerful telepaths in the known universe - takes a trip to Earth. She does so in order to promote her reality TV show through recording The Defenders in their natural enviroment. With the assistance of Psinamouri, a new addition to the team, The Defenders of Paragon discover the Powerful Psychic and attempt to subdue her. Unfortunately the Undead Sicilian mafia get involved, and The Defenders of Paragon are forced to fight a war on both fronts. During the battle, The Knights of The Round decide to lend a hand, with Xanatos and The Green Knight meeting up once again. Siren - one of the newest recruits to The Defenders, involuntarily sings a song of charm on Xanatos when he rescued her from falling Debree. Xanatos runs from the heroine, his mind aghast with impure thought he does not understand. The Green Knight comforts him, and the two eventually make love. Eventually emerging victorious despite the odds being stacked against them, The Defenders send Lady Alexia and Vegas (The leader of the Undead Mafia) to The Ziggurat - where they are both placed in high security cells. Lady Alexia escapes however - fleeing into space.
- The Phantom Visage - now one of the most powerful heroes in the city and guardian of the universe - gathers together a crack team of Defenders to follow Lady Alexia into the depths of space. The team includes: The Infernus Avenger, The Crimson Flame, Psimurai, Malcom Macabre, The Legionnaire, Valiant, Doc Justice, Jumping Jack and SuperCracker.
- After seeing his own world destroyed by the Rikti, Emperor Xanatos travels to Earth, intent on beginning anew his reign of terror.
2004
- The Guardian - Xanatos and Slick's son from an alternate - future shows up in Paragon - warning them of the future to come - and the imminent armageddon. The Green Knight is obviously distraught by this, and she breaks up with Xanatos, taking their newborn baby daughter, Gwendolyn, with her.
- Sovereign - an old time-traveling enemy of The Defenders of Paragon kidnaps The Guardian and manages to travel back to the future. Xanatos follows him and together Father and son defeat the mad supervillain. It takes Xanatos ten years before he is able to return to the past - during which time he bonds with his son. Together - the two heroes manage to find their way back to the past - where nothing has changed during their absence.
- Xanatos, Poison, and BugBite are asked by the Paragon City council to assist with the rebuilding of Paragon City after the first Rikti war. The three quickly become close friends, forming a temporary supergroup known as "The Third Batch". The group grows in strength and in numbers, and many of Paragons fledgling criminals are put behind bars by the team.
- April 22nd: The Rikti invade Paragon City, and Xanatos's son, The Guardian, dies in the ensuing conflict.
- After the second Rikti invasion on the 22nd April, the Defenders left standing gather their resources and continue the good fight. Bayne and Exodus quickly rise to positions of importance within the team, on account of their actions in the rebuilding of Paragon City. The new-age Defenders go from strength to strength, their numbers swelling as heroes flock to the call to arms. Desperate to help protect and preserve Paragon after the war.
- The disappearance of Statesman lead many heroes to wonder what had become of the leader of the superheroic community within Paragon. His absence left a gap that three men tried to fill. Xanatos, Ascendant, and Captain Valor, each one an icon in their own right, struggled with the weight of leading an ever-growing community of super powered heroes. To combat this, they established a meta-collection of supergroups known as The Alliance. The Alliance existed as a means to rally the superhero population of Paragon City in times of great crisis.
- The first crisis the Alliance faced was related to the disappearance of Statesman. Unbeknown to the heroes of Paragon, the Praetorians had kidnapped Statesman, and were planning a full-blown invasion of Paragon City. Various praetorian duplicates began appearing in Paragon City - including the evil Emperor Xanatos. They mocked the cities heroes and told them that soon Tyrant would be invading their planet now that Statesman was out of the picture. These duplicates intiated a series of attacks on key strategic areas within Paragon. The Praetorian forces, led by Emperor Xanatos, were ultimately defeated. Emperor Xanatos was killed by a Praetorian marksman. His invasion of Paragon was apparently his own doing, and was not the work of Tyrant.
- The Alliance held several more meetings as the threat to Paragon City grew in 2004. Most notably during the Rularuu Invasion and the Ziggurat Prison Break. After Tyrant was defeated by a team of the cities most powerful heroes, The Alliance was disbanded. With Xanatos, Ascendant, and Captain Valor vowed to reform it if the need ever arose again.
- 2004 was a year of much socialising for Xanatos. Including the wedding of his close friends and allies Loan Shark and Ireland Love, his own romantic dalliances with Ms. Independence, and his rivalry with vigilante Section-8.
- Xanatos was also named 2004's "Time Man of the Year" due to his role as a beacon of hope in the Rikti, Praetorian, and Rularuu invasions. His role as one of the chief heroes leading excursion forces against the emerging threat of the Hamidon was also reasons for his nomination.
2005
- Xanatos's close friend and ally Ireland Love goes missing. After the superhero community tears apart Paragon looking for her, it becomes apparent that Requiem has kidnapped her in an attempt to lure many of Paragon's finest into a trap. The insane leader of the Fifth Column takes over a small neighbourhood in Paragon City known as Burton Street. Requiem utterly devastates it with an army of werewolves, taunting the heroes of the city to move against him. Xanatos takes the bait, gathering his closest allies to his side, and sends Requiem packing. The Nazi villain is sent straight to the Ziggurat and Ireland Love returns to active duty.
- One of Xanatos's oldest allies, the superheroic master of espionage known as The Spy is found murdered by magical means in Blyde's Square. This came as a result of Xanatos sending him into the Rogue Isles to attempt to discover what lord Recluse was up to. While The Spy was able to discover a great deal of information on Lord Recluse and the forces of Arachnos, ultimately his discovery came at a cost: his life. According to the police reports it was Scirocco that killed him, sending a clear message to Xanatos that he should stay out of the Rogue Isles. The death of the spy shocked the superhero community and caused Xanatos a great deal of personal guilt.
- Not long after the death of the Spy, Lord Recluse began to invade various sections of Paragon City. One such place, a decimated zone known as "Siren's Call" was ground zero for the assault. It was during this battle that Xanatos fought against the group of rogues known as Fracture. Fracture was comprised of the various rogues that opposed the Bone Squad and their leader Charon. Due to his close allegiance with Charon, Xanatos was a target. There were many casualties that day, but the heroes were ultimately able to force the pantheon of villains and rogues out of Siren's Call. If only for the moment.
- 2005 also marked the return of Emperor Xanatos - the formerly dead evil Praetorian double of Xantos. After being brought back to life by means unknown, the praetorian villain wasted no time in murdering several important members of The Defenders of Paragon. After Lord Recluse invaded Paragon City, Emperor Xanatos aligned himself with the lord of the Rogue Isles, becoming a constant threat to not only Xanatos, but to heroes everywhere. It is during this time that Emperor Xanatos founds a group of villains known as The Destroyers of Paragon. They act as a counter to Xanatos' own team The Defenders of Paragon.
- Much like 2004, 2005 was a year of much socialising for Xanatos. He attended the wedding of his former love interest Ms. Independence and her new beau Lord Paladin, he attended the funeral of the communist superhero Comrade Smersh, he established an alliance between The Defenders of Paragon and the Midnight Avengers, and he began to work with scientist Bruce Boyde in the Shadow Shard.
2006
- The ongoing war with the Rogue Isles and the forces of Arachnos began to take a toll on the superheroic community within Paragon. Even Xanatos himself found himself growing despondent to the impact the heroes were having on the waves and waves of villains and rogues that kept arriving at Siren's Call. Feeling the growing apathy towards the war effort, a young hero known as Inertial forms a group known as The Peacekeepers. The Peacekeepers are a meta-collective of supergroups similar to The Alliance that was established in 2004. The only difference is that The Peacekeepers act more as a superpowered military unit. Under Inertial's leadership, and with Xanatos's mentoring, The Peacekeepers membership thrives, and the group is successful in repelling wave after wave of villains in Siren's Call.
2007
- Xanatos continues to lead his supergroup against the emerging threat of the Sadistic Seven. Seven deadly supervillains, united in their desire to bring "destruction and malice to the people of Paragon City." Xanatos's old foe and praetorian double, Emperor Xanatos is a prominent member of the Sadistic Seven. And because of this The Defenders of Paragon found themselves in the crosshairs of the Sadistic Seven on More than one occasion. Despite this, The Defenders, as well as many other superheroes, found themselves ultimately fighting side-by-side with Sadistic Seven members Mindswipe and Mr. Mud when it emerged that Emperor Xanatos was a greater threat than any of them had ever imagined. Emperor Xanatos was ultimately defeated, and the Sadistic Seven became just another memory.
- Dynatron, one of Xanatos' most powerful allies in The Defenders of Paragon, resigns from active duty. She is one of the many heroes who simply lose interest in protecting the city. Xanatos understands, and he wishes her well in whatever life next throws her way. As he watches the hero fly off into the distance from the top of a Steel Canyon skyscraper, Xanatos feels that all is not well with The Defenders of Paragon.
- A chance encounter with The Phantom Visage, now returned from his mission into deep space, gives Xanatos a sudden sense of dread. After hearing tales of The Phantom Visage's travels around the cosmos, it soon becomes obvious that there lies in wait a coming storm, one which will threaten all life in the universe. Horrified by this news, Xanatos leaves Earth in pursuit of an answer. The Phantom Visage goes with him, acting as a convoy to the stars.
- Xanatos leaves Bayne as chairman of The Defenders of Paragon in his absence. Having every confidence that he will lead the team to greatness. Exodus offers to care for Gwendolyn in Xanatos' absence.
2008
- Xanatos travels to the planet Gorgon in search of interstellar scientist Klay Adams. (One of the few men capable of locating the source of the coming storm.) Unfortunately, upon arriving at Gorgon, Xanatos discovers the planet has been invaded by the intergalactic conqueror known as Galacton and that Klay Adams is fiercely loyal to him. Eventually Galacton and Xanatos fight, and Klay ultimately comes to Xanatos's aid. Galacton is defeated, but not before putting Klay into a coma. Klay awakens several days later, the injuries he had sustained damaging his mind beyond repair and awakening latent powers in his body. He was now a living nervous system - able to control the pain others felt through a powerful red fire-like energy that his body began to emit. Klay was driven completely insane by this, and, blaming Xanatos for his condition, renamed himself Paniac.
- Having been travelling in deep space for over a year with no results, Xanatos and The Phantom Visage grow desperate and begin to take risks. They explore a small planet orbiting a very large black hole. As they touch down on the planet, they notice that the planet's surface is completely smooth. While it is natural in origin, it gives the illusion of design. They are barely there five minutes before they are set upon by shadows - large formless creatures comprised of pure darkness. Their lives on the line against impossible odds; Xanatos and The Phantom Visage give it their all, fighting back wave after wave of the black demons, all the while praying for a miracle. Without any warning the shadows began to disperse, apparently frightened by something. That something was the miracle the two heroes had been praying for. As Xanatos and The Phantom Visage lay battered and broken on the eerilly smooth planet surface, a lone figure approached them. He introduced himself as Sotanax, and had more than a passing resemblance to Xanatos. As the two heroes tended to their injuries, Sotanax told them of their predicament: they had wandered into the shadow-world, a place named after its strange inhabitants and ever-dark weather. Sotanax revealed that he himself was one of the shadows, but that he had achieved sentience many years ago after coming into contact with a superhero. This sentience, the ability to think for himself, had made Sotanax immeasurably powerful and by extension the ruler of the shadow-world. While powerful in his own right, Sotanax lacked the ability to locate the source of the coming storm. He did, however, know of a race of super beings who may be able to help. They were called the K'tar, and their technology was the stuff of legend. Happy to put the obscure shadow-world behind them, Xanatos and The Phantom Visage made their way towards the home world of the K'Tar.
- In late 2008, the two heroes happen upon an inhabited planet in the system surrounding star HD 113766. The locals, while human in appearance, are a highly advanced society of pacifist super beings. Their technology is the stuff of legends. A race of immortals known as the K'tar. It is upon arriving at their home world, that Xanatos came face to face with the grandson of one of his oldest allies: Libertyman. Confused to see the protege hero away from Paragon City, Xanatos soon learns that Libertyman's grandfather, the original Libertyman, was an ally to an advanced species of aliens known as the K'Tar. While completely human, the original Libertyman was a protector to the K'Tar, aiding the pacifist aliens with all matters war. When the K'Tar's homeworld was invaded by Galarius in 2006, their cry for help to the original Libertyman fell upon his grandson, the current Libertyman, and member of The Defenders of Paragon. Having fought alongside Xanatos for many years, and having learned first hand how to combat Galarius, Libertyman was able to help the K'Tar fight off the threat of the intergalactic demi-god. With it now being 2007, and Galarius now no longer a threat to the K'tar people, Libertyman is in the perfect position to aid Xanatos in his quest to locate the coming storm. The technology required to locate the coming storm was complicated, but the K'tar were more than capable, and willing, to share it with Xanatos. They do, and the hero discovers that the coming storm is many centuries off, and is not a threat to the modern-day world.
- Before Xanatos was able to leave the home-world of the K'tar, the planet became under attack from the evil Emperor Xanatos and his army of Praetorian followers. He had followed Xanatos into space, desperate for the technology that would let him locate the coming storm for his own ends. (Presumably so he could speed it up, and direct it towards Earth!) With Libertyman, The Phantom Visage, and the K'tar forces holding back the praetorian army - the two Xanatos's fought hand-to-hand in the heart of the planet's capital city. Entire buildings were demolished as the two titans fought. Fire vs ice. Good vs evil. Eventually Xanatos emerged triumphant over his evil praetorian double, driving an icey blade through the chest of his evil double. While Emperor Xanatos was not slain, he was gravely wounded, and was soon taken into custody by the K'Tar people. With their leader defeated, the praetorian forces fled off-world. Scampering into the depths from which they had come.
2009
- In early 2009 Xanatos and The Phantom visage left the K'Tar home world and traveled back to Paragon City. Their reception was mixed. While concrete news of the coming storm was appreciated (for now the heroes had a time and date they could plan towards, even if it was many centuries in the future), The Defenders of Paragon did not welcome back their former leader with open arms. The team was not happy with how quick Xanatos had abandoned both them and the city. Xanatos understands, thanking his former team for their aid, and leaves them to their own devices.
- Xanatos marries his long-time girlfriend, Xanatess. Charon refuses to be best man.
- Xanatos, together with The Phantom Visage and Xanatess, form a new team of heroes in Paragon City. The group is called The Old Guard, and their headquarters are located in an orbital space station Xanatos had commissioned in the 1980s. The Old Guard live by a simple principle - they are the veteran heroes of Paragon City, it is their duty to train the next generation of heroes how to fight the good fight.
2010
- Springfist reappears suddenly in downtown Talos Island. His disappearance in 1962 apparently due to him being accidentally teleported to the future during a battle with the maniacal supervillain "The Grand Duke". Overjoyed to see an old ally of his still alive, Xanatos invites Springfist into the ranks of the Old Guard. Springfist becomes his second in command.
- The Old Guard's membership continues to grow at a steady pace. Sotanax appears on earth, cast out from the shadow realm by forces unknown, and is inducted into the team. Sandpit and The Bearded Archer, two old allies of The Phantom Visage, join the group after helping them fight off a Rikti Invasion. Fledgling hero 'The Brit' also joins the group; the first rookie hero to come under the wing of the Old Guard. The upsurge of new recruits forces Xanatos to open The Old Guard Academy in Steel Canyon: a large fortress-like building designed as a school for younger heroes.
- Xanatos retires from active duty. He becomes a trainer of new heroes in the Old Guard and is able to spend more time with his wife Xanatess and his daughter, Gwendolyn. Despite the ever-growing number of super powered villains and threats in the world, Xanatos is safe in knowing his training of the next generation of heroes is enough to make up for him no longer being active.
2011
- Despite now being retired, Xanatos is approached by Longbow Agent Dukakis to help out in one final mission. While he is hesitant to rejoin the war effort, the disappearance of his friend and long-time ally Red-Havok is enough to convince Xanatos to return to active Duty. Agent Dukakis asks Xanatos to lead Red-Havok's former group, The Infiltrators, on a undercover mission against the leader of The Warriors: Athena. Xanatos dons the mock-supervillain identity "Mr. Ice Guy" and, along with several other members of The Infiltrators, participates in a fighting tournament known as "The Olympiad" on Athena's Island home. The tournament is ultimately won by Red-Havok, who returned triumphantly during the tournament. The Olympiad, however, turns out to be little more than a training ground for a new generation of villains. It was never a contest of champions, but rather a means for the nefarious supervillain Phanto to discover new talent in the supervillain community. The Infiltrators break their cover and hunt Phanto down, defeating Athena (and her bodyguards Bia and Kratos) in the process. While Phanto is ultimately defeated, he reveals his reasons for searching for new villains: an army is forming.
- After the events of The Olmpiad, Xanatos returns to inactive duty for a short while. The reprive lasts only a matter of weeks however.
- Baron Blitzman, and old d-list enemy of Xanatos, is broken free from the Ziggurat by the notoriously villainous Sebastian Kain. Kain reveals that he is the one responsible for forming the army Phanto spoke of. The army known only by the acronym "ERA". Using the scientific genius of King Brain, Kain supercharges Baron Blitzman's superspeed to its maximum potential. At the behest of Sebastian Kain, Baron Blitzman breaks into the Ziggurat, freeing many of Xanatos' oldest and deadliest foes. After Sovereign is broken free from prison, Xanatos and his oldest living ally, The Imperial come out of retirement to take the villain down. As they do this, Baron Blitzman leads a strike force of villains to attack the Old Guard Academy.
- As the battle rages on, Xanatos finds himself relying on allies both old and new to fend off the emerging threat. Joe returns, helping to co-ordinate the hero response to the attack on the Old Guard Academy. Johnny Turbo and Rave Spider, two of Xanatos' new allies from The Infiltrators, are on hand to protect the students of the Old Guard Academy from Baron Blitzman. After a long and drawn out fight, The Imperial manages to slay Sovereign, finally putting the demon to rest. The battle leaves The Imperial severely weakened however, allowing the oppurtunistic villain Phanto to kill him.
- With The Imperial now dead, Xanatos returned to the Old Guard Academy to face off with Baron Blitzman. The battle that followed would prove to be the most intense and physically draining of both men's lives. Few know what truly happened that day, but the results were clear for all to see. Steel Canyon was almost devastated; and both Xanatos and his newfound arch rival Baron Blitzman, were placed in comas.
- Xanatos is still in a coma when his newfound allies, The Infiltrators, decide to finally take on their mysterious benefactor Mr. Shade and his organisation Orthrus Inc. It turns out that Mr. Shade is actually The Nitedevil, one of the heroes that The Havok Brothers fought alongside back in 2006. This doesn't stop Red-Havok and The Infiltrators from disabling Orthrus Inc, and causing their former ally to retreat to the shadows.
- With Orthrus Inc now dismantled, and Mr. Shade in hiding, the financial backing for The Infiltrators is taken away and the team is forced to close down. Red-Havok, always the optimist, sees this as a chance for a new beginning, and decides to form a team of Paragon's boldest and brightest. He calls this team "The Challengers". Xanatos, now back in the land of the awake, is the first to join, and is quickly followed by the former members of The Infiltrators; Johnny Turbo, Rave Spider, Foxy Ferret, Cyberman,Nimbus, The Masked Renegade, Armaments. Former Orthrus operatives; Azure Tracer, Liquidus, Liquid Zero. And new additions to the team; Gadgix, Voltium, Gadgix, and Luficia.
- It soon emerges that Imperial left his entire estate to Xanatos after his death. Because of this, The Cromwell Mansion becomes the headquarters of The Challengers, with The Imperial's seemingly limitless funds financing the team's exploits. Red-Havok hires reformed supervillain Dynomind to help construct a science lab under the Cromwell Mansion.
- The Challengers' roster now nearing completion, Xanatos seeks out his old ally and closest friend; Charon, to ask him about membership. What he discovers however, shocks him. Frank "Knuckles" LaRusso, long-time arch-nemesis of Charon, had finally decided enough was enough. He had sent each and every one of Charon's rogues after him, whilst simultaneously cutting Charon off from the superhero community by framing him for the deaths of a group of vigilantes known as "Blood Atonement". It was all for nothing however, Charon brutalised the vast majority of his Rogues Gallery, before vanishing into the night. Xanatos found Knuckles, Charon's arch-rival, with a knife plunged into his heart, a small note tied to his chest that read "My life's work". Charon had gone mad. Charon had, also, gone missing.
- Xanatos and The Challengers fight and defeat the villainous Dr. Corradine, a man obsessed with the power of The Hamidon. The victory comes at a great price however, for Rave Spider's brother, Adrian Miller, is slain in the ensuing conflict. Devastated by this loss, Rave Spider changes his identity to "The Replacer" - a boyhood dream that he and his brother had once shared.
2012
- With Paul Ooshun and Blast Cycle rounding out the team, The Challengers decide to hold a press conference to announce the team's formation proper. As with all things, the press conference does not go as expected. Paul Ooshun is revealed to be nothing more than a robot duplicate of the real Paul Ooshun, who is being held hostage by Sebastian Kain and ERA. The Challengers, alongside the many heroes that attended to press release, are ultimately able to locate the real Paul Ooshun and free him before any real damage is caused. Once again, The Challengers find themselves face-to-face with the nefarious Phanto, the villain personally responsible for kidnapping Paul Ooshun.
- After the death of Knuckles, two new crime bosses emerged. The former superhero Powerlaser, and the age-old anarchist supervillain Showtime. Both men wanted to take complete control of the Rogue Isles, and enlisted the help of several supervillains (including d-list enforcers such as Revolver II, Water Wizard, and Face-Lift,) to do just that. The Challengers head to The Rogue Isles to stop them, before finding that the two mob bosses have already turned on each other. With minimal effort, The Challengers arrest the two villains, sending them to Strongwall Penitentiary.
- Xanatos manages to find a completely insane Charon, driven mad by finally killing his arch nemesis. Realising that his friend needed some serious psychiatric help, Xanatos enlisted the aid of Mindswipe, an old enemy of Charon's, but perhaps the only man capable of sifting through the vigilante's psyche and putting the pieces back together. After several hours of mind-diving, Mindswipe is able to "cure" the heroes' madness. But after so long inside the mind of a hero...who is to say that Mindswipe didn't leave something in there himself? Charon joins The Challengers.
- Xanatos and The Challengers travel to the past to fight a time travelling nazi known as "The Veteran". While they are able to stop the villain's plans for world domination, seeing his old allies, The Cosmic Crew, alive and well once again, causes Xanatos to begin to question himself as a hero.
- Strongwall Penitentiary, prison and home the the vast majority of The Challengers' foes, is (legally) taken over by the billionaire Amon Aser. Aser claims to be reforming The Challengers' rogues gallery, claiming that he will succeed where other have failed. It is only when Johnny Turbo is forcibly taken to a holding cell in Strongwell that The Challengers realise Amon Aser is up to no good. The Challengers assault Strongwell, fighting back many of their rogues gallery as they battle their way to Amon Aser. They find Aser amidst the ruins of Strongwall, only to discover that he was a pawn in a plan by Exadeus - a long time enemy of The Infiltrators, and now sworn nemesis of The Challengers. The heroes locate Exadeus in an otherworldly plane known as the "Dark Matter Zone". The Challengers emerge triumphant, albeit at the cost of the supervillain's life.
- With both Phanto and Baron Blitzman now in hiding, ERA quickly falls into ruin, allowing the emerging threat of the United Underworld to take centre stage. The group, much like the Rogues Gallery of old, form a collective of rogues and villains with the sole aim of protecting one another in a City of Heroes. (With a series of nefarious plots from the group's rotating leadership threatening to undo The Challengers at every turn!) While The Challengers have thwarted the United Underworld every single time they have faced them, the group continues to grow in size and strength as more and more villains flock to their banner.
- Xanatos's old ally, the reformed villain Sovereign Fist, joins The Challengers. During this time, The Challengers form closer bonds with various groups within the superhero community. Including The Reciprocators, The Grey Watch, The Global Defense Force, and The Eternals.
- Baron Blitzman and Phanto, now operating under the name "Team Doom", begin to plot their ascent into the centre-stage of the villain community. They enlist countless villains to their cause. Including such prolific villain groups as The Rogues Gallery and The United Underworld. The plan is a simple but effective one. Phanto planned to detonate a psychic bomb over Paragon City, disabling the heroes of the City, and allowing the army of supervillains following his lead the opportunity to ransack Paragon. The Challengers hear word of this threat, and amass a collective of heroes on their side to help combat the legions following Team Doom. The Global Defense Force, The Eternals, The Gray Watch, and many others all flock to the side of Red-Havok and Xanatos, eager to protect their city from the emerging threat. The stalemate lasts only a week before Phanto and Baron Blitzman make their move, assaulting Siren's Call en masse. With most of The Challengers (including Xanatos) already taken out of action by Mr. Mud and Mindswipe of the Rogues Gallery prior to the battle, the odds are stacked against the heroes. Somehow the heroes prevail, thanks in no small part to Replacer duplicating himself three times in order to make up for the missing heroes. Ultimately however it was Icon of The Eternals that foiled the villain's dastardly plot; personally knocking out Phanto, and disarming the bomb. As Nine-Ball calls for The United Underworld to retreat back to The Rogue Isles, Baron Blitzman has a mental break down. He attacks all of the assembled heroes by himself, and despite his unparalleled speed, he is quickly subdued.
- Johnny Turbo visits Baron Blitzman in The Ziggurat, eager to learn how Baron Blitzman is able to master his powers of superspeed with such precision. Baron Blitzman tells Johnny Turbo that it is due to him not allowing anyone to "hold him back", and encourages the young hero to ditch his friends and allies in The Challengers. The truth behind Baron Blitzman's powers is, however, much darker. Unbeknown to anyone, Baron Blitzman is able to absorb the speed of anyone he comes into contact with. (Even absorbing it permanently if he is able to kill them!) He demonstrates this ability to Johnny Turbo by knocking him out, absorbing his speed, and using it to break himself out of The Ziggurat. As he escapes, Baron Blitzman also breaks free another of Xanatos's arch-enemies, his evil Praetorian double: Emperor Xanatos. With his two greatest foes on the loose, and with the threat of the coming storm forever on the horizen, Xanatos finds himself stretched too thin between travelling the cosmos, and spending time on Earth with his team-mates in The Challengers. Xanatos decides to leave the group, Content in the belief that Replacer's maturing power levels are enough to make up for his absence.
- Xanatos dies at the hands of Rularuu, in an event that has become known as "The Battle for the Multiverse".
