Personality
Bayne is ecclectic mix of attitudes. On one had he is often thought of as a playboy about town who dates supermodels and famous actresses. On the other hand he is a serious and dedicated research scientist who has developed a phenominal number of inventions and patents that increase the quality of life for people all over the world. He enjoys life and finds humor in most things he encounters, yet he can also become very serious when the situation calls for it.
Powers
Bayne is a mutant with the superhuman ability to absorb ambient cosmic energy into the cells of his body, transform it in an unknown manner, and release it as waves of energy that heat the air in their path enough to turn it into plasma. (Plasma is a super-heated state of matter consisting of charged subatomic particles.) These waves will emanate from his body in all directions unless he purposefully tries to channel them in a single directions, usually along the length of his arms. Bayne is himself immune to the intense heat he creates. Whether he is immune to intense heat from other sources is not yet known.
Despite past accounts, the energy that Bayne releases is not truly a concussive force. When Bayne strikes an object with the waves of intensity of hot plasma, the sudden vast jump in temperature will often cause objects to shatter, explode, or seemingly disintegrate, and an observer might therefore wrongly think that the object had been struck by a concussive force.
The plasma waves emanating from Bayne's body can be focused into protective force fields that are highly resistant to concussive forces and pratically all forms of energy. Through concentration he can generate protective fields around others as well as himself. The fields of protective plasma that Bayne can center on others has a rapid decay rate, often completely dissipating within minutes of creation.
Bayne's body is constantly in the process of absorbing cosmic radiation. The act of concentration involved in releasing his energy in anything other than an omnidirectional wave is physically exhausting for Bayne if he continues it over an extended period of time.
Unknown to most, Bayne no longer ages as the years pass by. His body has evolved to the point that the constant energy absorbtion has made him immune to aging. It has also made him completely self sufficient and he no longer needs to eat food or drink water to survive. He is also able to exist in the vacuum of space without any form of life support.
Character History
Johnathan Lake, son of industrialist Anthony Lake, demonstrated a mechanical aptitude and inventive genius at a very early age. He attended private schooling until he enrolled in the high energy engineering program at the University of Washington at the age of 15. He graduated at the top of his class at the age of 18. In the (3) years of college he managed to earn degree level credits while establishing (17) patents with the US Patents office.
Upon the death of his parents when he was 23, he and his siblings inherited the controlling interest in his father's business, Lake Enterprises, a multi-billion dollar industry conglomerate whose chief contracts are weaponry and munitions for the U.S. government. Robert Lake, his older brother, took over the CEO position of Lake Enterprises while Johnathan became a corporate vice-president and an associate director of the partical physics division located in the Seattle area.
Johnathan was 26 years old when the Rikti invaded. Realizing the great threat posed to humanity he chose to reveal the world that he was a mutant, and he joined the fight against the Rikti. He resigned his position with Lake Enterprises in favor of using his powers to protect the world. Now, 2 years later he has chosen to move from the Seattle area to Paragon City in order to be at the center of the fight against crime and evil.
Upon his arrival in Paragon City, Bayne became an early member of The Defenders of Paragon. Within months of his membership he was promoted to the position of co-Chairman. To this day his research and technological expertise has helped maintain The Defenders of Paragon at the forefront of the Superheroe community. Together with the other members of the group he has proven invaluable to the defense of life, liberty, and freedom.
Character Evolution
It is known that over the course of the next ten millenium Bayne will evolve into a sentient class M star. His evolution will result in his need to leave the Earth for the depths of outer space.
