Background

Griffin Castlemartin was your average teenager growing up in Portland, Oregon. He was a gifted basketball player in high school, making the small school all state team at point guard starting his sophomore year. He was quicker than most, and was considered unguardable. He played as more of a slasher than as a traditional distributor, which probably cost him a few scholarship opportunities, as coaches wonder if his game would translate well to college. This depressed and angered Griffin, who sought solace in crystal meth. After falling out of the small college he had been offered a scholarship at, he became a full time drug attack. He supported his habit by small time robberies. He was especially good at smash and grabs. He often was already down the street by the time the alarm sounded. He didn't realize that he had superhuman speed, caused by a mutation. He had always been fast, but now, he was fast, and possessed superhuman reflexes. These gifts may have all gone to waste if it had not been for a chance meeting with The Global Guard, who were in Portland dismantling Rikti bombs. He brazenly, or ignorantly, attempted a smash and grab directly in front of the heroes. One of the Guard, possesing ice powers, froze him in place, negating his speed. The Guard were surprised at coming across a metahuman randomly, and thought that he was salvageable. Working a deal with the district attorney, as Griffin was wanted for numerous smash and grabs, they took him into their custody, and back to Caffan Island.

Joining the Guard

Once the Guard had Griffin at their base, they began a regiment of detoxification, and rehab, attempting to cure him of his drug addiction. As they had access to some of the leading molecular science, they were rather successful, as far as the physical addictions were concerned. Griffin still had a mental addiction to the rush the drug gave him. The Guard began training him in hand to hand combat, and soon, the rush of a fight replaced the rush he received from the drugs. His speed and reflexes made him a formidable combatant prior to training. Afterwards, he excelled at it. He soon realized that going unarmed against those in exosuits, and with super tough skin was a losing proposition, so he had the Guard fashion retractable claws for him made of a nearly unbreakable material. One of his favorite tactics was to spin on an axis at a high rate of speed, creating a whirlwind, and then extend his claws, ripping everything nearby to shreds. He fancied this tactic so much he took the name Cy-claw. Cy-claw soon became a valuable member of the Guard. He was a bit reckless in battle, confident that his reflexes would protect him on one hand, and feeling that he should already be dead anyways, on the other. These attitudes allowed him a certain fearlessness when battling the Rikti. He was often able to shred the aliens before they even knew what hit them. When the Guard went semi-inactive during the break between the Rikti conflicts, Cy-claw remained at the base, fighting villains where ever he could find them.

Death

Along with the rest of members of the first Global Guard, Cy-claw was killed by an unknown force(?) in late 2007 during their relaunch celebration. The details of the attack and Cy-claw's death are currently not fully known. There is a memorial on Caffan Island.
