Before he became master of undeath, Proctor was a school janitor. His life was meaningless and unfulfilled. He decided to end his life, and jumped from a cliff on Thorn Isle. Unsurprising. As he was falling, a strange portal opened up and Proctor was swallowed up. He awoke in total blackness, a pedestal with a single dusty book was the only other thing he could see. He walked to the book but was unable to read it's title.

The text was not in any language he was familiar with. As he opened it the book gave up its secrets. The text became legible and Proctor started reading about the dark art of necromancy. In order to gain full access to its powers, Proctor was to pierce his heart with a blade hidden in the books pages. He did so. James was reborn as an undead abomination. The book whispered once again that to master undeath, he must become undeath.

Proctor uses his new found powers to raise corpses and steal life energy from helpless civilians. This keeps him looking human. He began a sadistic life of crime under the alias Dr. Fatal.

Proctor was one of the many villains involved during The Blacklist's assault on Bloody Bay. He was defeated by Challengers Red-Havok, Replacer, Foxy Ferret, Blast Cycle and Timmy Quick, who brought him to Amon Aser to be held at Strongwall Penitentiary.

The Challengers kept the book of death with them at The Challenger Mansion for safe keeping. Without the book, Proctor has reverted back into a zombie, and is currently wandering the ruins of Strongwall, feeding on whatever he can find.

In The Challengers - Issue 19: Artif***ed, Harold Wellington unwittingly came in contact with the Book of Death, The Ripjaw Bone, The Magus Mask and The Earth Talisman, transforming him into the ultra-powered being known as Artifact. After a painstaking battle, the individual magic items were separated and began to take on tangible bodies which were used to battle each other. The Challengers used this to their advantage, letting the individual items battle themselves. Following the battle, the artifacts disappeared.

The location of the Book of Death is currently unknown.
