HISTORY

A toddler screamed in the night. In her dreams, the tiny tot saw giant shards of living crystal reaching for her, a glow building inside them until she was blinded.

15 years later…

Blonde Georgia “Geomace” Gaines was a celebrated heroine of Praetoria. Flipping her long hair nonchalantly over her shoulder as she celebrated yet another victory, Geomace smiled brilliantly for the cameras snapping her photo for a write up in the government approved newspaper. As the crowd dispersed, one young reporter lingered.

“Miss..ah, Geomace? May I ask a few more questions?” The reporter didn’t look much older than 16-year-old Georgia.

“Sure! I can give you 10 minutes only, though. I have a manicure at 10,” Georgia replied, squinting at her neglected nails.

The reporter blinked. “Ah, ok. Um, well, how did you get your name?”

“Oh that’s an easy one.” The earth dominator concentrated and a large hammer made of stone appeared in her hand and her eyes literally lit up as wisps of power rose up her arms. “See? Geo is earth, Mace is self-explanatory.” She smiled, but the short reporter seemed a bit scared and simply nodded. Georgia put the weapon away and her eyes returned to their normal bright blue.

“Well, then, do you know where your powers come from?”

A dark cloud seemed to fill Georgia’s eyes for just a moment, but cleared quickly. She didn’t exactly tell this truthfully when asked about her powers.“Well, see, I just realized one day that I could concentrate and make things happen with the rock around me. The more I practiced, the easier it became, until, bam! I’m a superhero.” She smiled again, trying to convince the reporter that this was of course the simplest and best explanation. She looked down at a watch that wasn’t there. “Oh look at the time, I must be going! I’ll be sure to check out your article! Bye!” Georgia took off before the reporter could protest.

What she did not tell anyone, not even her parents, was how she really got her powers. She’d been having the same nightmare ever since she could remember. Devouring Earth would be coming after her, and she’d wake up temporarily blinded by a bright light with a voice chanting a strange language in her head.

When she was 12, she accompanied her parents on an emperor-sanctioned expedition into formally DE-controlled territory. All she knew was that it had to do with stuff that went on with the Hamidon Wars. While her scientist parents were busy checking their equipment for anomalous readings, Georgia had started hearing that same strange voice whispering to her. No one else seemed to hear it so she said nothing, but got up to see if she could find it. She’d never heard it while awake, or so clearly. As she wandered away from her campsite, it grew louder, leading her willingly to a cave with a sparkling stream flowing out of it. As she walked into the cave, almost hypnotized as the voice filled her head, she realized she was starting to understand what it was telling her, if not the exact word. Halfway to the back of the cave it had grown quite dark. There in the middle of the stream however, was a glowing shard of dark pink crystal. The voice told her to pick it up. She waded into the shallow stream, reached into the cold water to grab the crystal, and heard the voice chanting the same words over and over in her head…

What seemed like ages later, she woke up the frantic voices of her parents as they shook her awake. “GEORGIA!” her mother wailed. She opened her eyes, and immediately a blinding light filled her field of vision as she tried to sit up at the same time. Cotton seemed to fill her mouth and her head explode. Her father sighed and asked “Honey, how did your clothes get wet?” She opened her eyes again, slowly, as the light subsided. As she looked around she realized she was in her tent. She gestured at her throat and was given a bottle of water. After drinking the entire thing she tried her voice. “Did you bring me back here from the cave?” she asked. Her parents shared an anxious look. “What cave sweetie?” her mother asked. “You fell asleep almost right after we got here and haven’t moved. You’ve been asleep for several hours and we were trying to wake you for dinner when we realized your clothes were soaking wet and you didn’t respond to us for several minutes…you aren’t on some sort of drug are you?” She peered closely at her daughter. “No Mother, don’t be silly. I must’ve spilled some water on myself or something…” Even 12-year-old Georgia knew that if she told her parents that a voice had told her to follow it into a cave and to grab a glowing crystal she’d be given drugs, not accused of doing them. Her parents started to relax and Georgia said, “You know, I was having a bad dream…I bet I had some water here next to me and that I knocked it over then. And I haven’t been feeling really all that great today…” She was lucky there was a large cup nearby to account for the spilled water. She let her mother fuss over her and then followed her to the campfire to dry.

What she kept secret from everyone from that day on, was that the voice still whispered to her, and that she knew the words that summoned the powers she now used, but not what they meant. She also knew the voice had been urging her to ignore the mysterious notes she’d been getting telling her there was a group of supers that she must “team up with and become a part of in order to change history…”.
