Again, a very Silver Age character. One of my favorite characters of all time is Gorilla Grodd, and I love the "Gorilla Age" of comics. Naturally, I had to have my very own gorilla villain. After several abortive attempts (brutes and so forth), the play on words (Guerrilla and Gorilla) came to me. The rest, as they say, is history.

Personality
With a brain evolved beyond average human capacity, Guerrilla Gorilla is a brilliant thinker. Educated (via correspondence) at some of the finest universities in the world, GG is an intellectual. He possesses a voluminous vocabulary, precise diction, and a disdain for those he deems to be "simpletons".
He does, however, still possess some of his baser gorilla instincts. If riled, he can become a wild and fearsome foe.
Abilities
Guerrilla Warfare
Trained by freedom fighters in the jungles of Africa, Guerrilla Gorilla is a ruthless and cunning expert in guerrilla warfare. He has augmented this field experience by reading some of the greatest military tacticians in the world. The end result is an excellent grasp of small unit tactics. When he achieves his eventual gorilla army, GG also looks forward to studing warfare on a larger scale.
While operating in the Rogue Isles, GG is accompanied by a small unit of his finest guerrilla fighters -- three light infantry soldiers, a heavy infantry commando, and two special operations specialists. He has code-named these men with the names of so-called "lower" primates.
Leadership
A compelling orator, and an inspiring leader, Guerrilla Gorilla possesses the strength of his convictions. His men follow him without question, having served under him for years in the jungle. Even against superior forces or overwhelming odds, GG often achieves victory based solely on his fearsome presence and masterful control of his men.
Equipment
Traps
GG carries numerous portable traps, refined over years of long use in the jungle. While most of them are non-lethal, they are inevitably painful and highly effective. From small mortars to gas mines, grenades, caltrops, and flashbombs, GG's gorilla strength allows him to carry a small arsenal of powerful traps.
He also has some medical training, and carries a small submachine gun. However, he will often eschew this gun and simply attack opponents with his bare hands.
Character History
The Van Meers Corporation
For 115 years, the Van Meers corporation has held a virtual monopoly on diamond mining is South Africa, earning the company an enormous fortune. However, the Van Meers family maintains a ruthless attitude towards the bottom line, paying low-grade wages and keeping employees in virtual slavery. In 1986, human rights groups demanded that Van Meers increase their wages and provide safe working conditions for their laborers. The Van Meers, in response, fired 80% of their work force, and began investigating alternative sources of labor.
Several project ran simultaneously. Robotic, chemical, and explosives-based solutions met with varying degrees of success. But it was a rogue scientist and criminal named Doctor Evolvo who presented the Van Meers with their next great success: hyper-evolved gorillas capable of following simple commands and kept sedate and obedient through a combination of training and drugs. Within three months, the Van Meers had doubled the output of their mines using this controlled, super-strong work force, culled from the surrounding mountain gorilla population.
Evolvo was continuing the refinement of his process when the unexpected happened: his Hyper-Evolution treatment resulted in a gorilla with a genius-level IQ. This gorilla, highly resistant to brainwashing, escaped after several weeks of mistreatment at the hands of Evolvo and his helpers. Before his escape, his IQ was classified at approximately 182.
Revolutionary
This gorilla, Gorilla 8544, escaped into the mountains, evading Van Meers patrols, hired mercenaries, and militia. He was discovered by a cell of communist freedom fighters, the People's African Liberation Army, whose headquarters was hidden in the mountains. Taken in by the guerrillas, Gorilla 8544 was taught to speak English, Dutch, and Spanish, and learned military strategy, guerrilla combat techniques, and the use of small arms and traps. Establishing a fake human identity, Gorilla 8544 was also able to attend correspondence schools, receiving degrees in electronics, chemistry, and history.
8544 quickly rose to a position of leadership in the PALA, leading numerous successful campaigns to secure supplies and arms for the group, while subtly shifting the PALA's goals. In time, the PALA was re-named the Primate Liberation Front, with the goal of freeing 8544's enslaved brethren. In a stunning night-time raid, nearly all of the Van Meer's modified gorillas were rescued, and several million dollars in equipment and diamonds was stolen or destroyed.
Criminal
However, the rescued gorillas lacked 8544's intelligence. Frustrated, 8544 attempted to track down Doctor Evolvo in order to unlock the secret to hyper-evolving his compatriots. But Evolvo had returned to the Rogue Isles, in international waters off of the North American coast. With a hand-picked group of PLF soldiers accompanying him, 8544 travelled to the Rogue Isles in an attempt to track down Evolvo, and secure the materials and money necessary to enact the hyper-evolution process on a large scale.
To date, Evolvo has eluded 8544. In the meantime, 8544 has begun a career of notable crimes, including run-ins with high-ranking Longbow officers and members of the Freedom Phalanx. Calling himself "Guerrilla Gorilla", 8544's focus has shifted from tracking down Evolvo to establishing a power base in the Rogue Isles. However, his ultimate goal is the successful hyper-evolution of all gorillas, and the establishing of an independent gorilla state.
