As a new and idealistic veterinary school graduate, Dr. Ava Atoms wanted to make a difference. She craved the higher learning and exciting discoveries of a career in research, and took a position at SERAPH working in the laboratory of a certain Dr. Creed. Dr. Atoms worked closely under Creed in developing a few preliminary human-animal hybrids, using fascinating and sometimes dangerous combinations of chemicals, radiation, surgery, and even a little magic to achieve their results. Together, Creed and Atoms painstakingly created crude human hybrids with bats, wolves, snakes, and a couple of bird species.

Immersed in her work and her lofty academic goals, Dr. Atoms gave little thought to the effects her research had on her human and animal subjects…a failing that would come to haunt her in later years. Just inches from an important publication unveiling the early results of their new human-spider hybridization, their best work yet, Drs. Creed and Atoms’s dreams were dashed by their colleague Dr. Geist’s thievery of their work. Geist disappeared into the secret labs of Arachnos, and Creed quit SERAPH in a fit of rage and moved to Mercy Island to exact his revenge. This left Dr. Atoms nominally in charge of a demolished lab and research that had been set back by years, if not shattered entirely. SERAPH began the inevitable process of closing the lab permanently.

Angry, scared, and depressed, and with her career seemingly in ruins, Dr. Atoms scrambled for a way out. She left SERAPH behind, but not empty-handed…after first freeing the hybrids that still survived, she took with her an assortment of radioactive compounds and a colony of research bats and disappeared into the Rogue Isles underground.

Dr. Atoms fought her battle against panic and depression the only way she knew how—by continuing the work on bat hybrids as best she could, and with heavy use of self-prescribed medications...and other drugs available without prescription on certain street corners. Her sanity was questionable at best when she took herself as a human subject, exposing herself to radically dangerous doses of radiation and an excruciatingly painful series of surgeries in a quest for the ultimate radioactive human-bat hybrid…Hazbat!

To this day, she will not reveal the name of the surgeon who must have used her hybridizing technology to graft wings onto her back, and in her saner moments she expresses profound regret for the suffering of her previous experimental victims. Hazbat spent untold hours in sewers and back alleys experimenting with flight and perfecting her control over radioactivity, learning to weaken others while strengthening herself as a means to survival.

Hazbat would surely have died a mentally ill, homeless, and misshapen wreck were it not for the day she happened across a crime scene and witnessed the hero Monolith Man at work. Hidden from view, Hazbat deployed her radioactive powers to weaken Monolith Man’s adversary and then strengthened and healed Monolith Man beyond what even he was capable of himself. After dispatching the criminal to jail, Monolith Man sought out the source of this power and found Hazbat, weak, hungry, and defiant. Monolith Man fed Hazbat her first decent meal in weeks, and a strange and shaky friendship was born, hero to villain, and not without some elements of undeniable attraction. Their meetings were clandestine and quick, and all the gossip rags could say for sure was that Hazbat seemed healthier, both physically and mentally, than she had ever been, and more likely to do a good deed…even to the point of openly teaming with heroes from time to time to fight the villainous influences that once ruled her, starved her, and threatened to ruin her.

Since leaving behind her dirty, shameful, villainous life, Hazbat has reshaped her powers with radioactivity to return to the life she once studied to fulfill, a life as a healer. She relishes healing her allies while weakening and infecting whomever is deemed the enemy of the hour. Hazbat is not a faithful friend, but rather a capricious rogue fighting her own battles as she sees fit…except when it comes to Monolith Man. Only one man could possibly guide Hazbat to the virtuous life of a hero…will he want to take on the love of this poisonous woman?
