Past: Mirrored Childhoods
Holly is the eldest sister by 6 minutes. Both she and her twin, Molly, were delivered by Caesarian section to Carmela Bradshaw on June 11th, father unknown. When Carmela was returned to prison a month and a half later, having recovered from her surgery and nursed the twins to sufficient health to survive the switch, the girls were entrusted to their grandmother, Joanne Andrews.
At 6-months-old, they were legally adopted by their grandmother following a lethal prison riot that left Carmela dead and buried. They remained under Joanne's care until their teenage years.
Joanne kept a strict household. Curfews, rules, religion.
This same environment had created Carmela. Not a single thing had changed, not even the threadbare furniture of lime green purchased in the 1950's. Joanne maintained that her third husband, the one that had helped to spawn the mobster queen, had infected her daughter with his evil. The following two husbands only contributed with their constant 'attention' lavished upon Carmela.
This time around, Joanne would have no male figure in her home to defile and sway her grandchildren from Christ and the light of good.
All well and good under normal circumstances. However, their grandmother deteriorated into an almost violently severe case of dementia. Nothing was remembered beyond five or ten good minutes. With such opportunity, the twins found it easy to manipulate their world to their advantage. No punishment would ever last very long.
It all started with simple shoplifting.
Simplicity
Within weeks, the pair found themselves in over their heads. One night in particular, they stood side-by-side against a wall deep within Mercy with their hands extended above their heads. Holly would never forget staring down the dual-barrels of a shotgun while her sister sobbed openly to her left.
The moment that she decided that this thug would indeed pull the trigger and end her, something within Holly snapped. Her left hand swung down to grasp the cool metal and shove it to her right while a booted foot kicked up and into the thug's crotch.
Buckshot tore through her shoulder and forearm while her palm and fingers seared with the burning heat coming off the barrels.
Molly straightened immediately beside her sister, the false sobs broken so that she could step forward and send a curled fist into the man's side, ribs snapping. By that time, Holly had the shotgun turned about so that her own finger found the trigger. Molly stepped back and Holly squeezed.
Self-defense, certainly. The elation that each twin experienced might not have gone over well had they ever ended up in a courtroom.
The Allure
It was so easy.
Molly took over for the pair while Holly went through the various surgeries needed to mend her arm and shoulder. With no insurance to pay, the younger twin got the money however she could. This included, unfortunately, enlisting with Arachnos with a career track that would eventually leave her spine sprouting additional legs.
When the eleventh surgery was completed and Holly still had no mobility within the limb, she made the decision to have it removed entirely. The depression that followed was all-consuming and went on for a long stretch of months. Nothing seemed capable of dragging her back out again. Even the mechanical replacement that Molly had arranged did nothing to soothe her.
Months longer still and Holly finally had learned how to function with her new arm of steel and iron alloys. It was during one of their weekly training sessions that Holly realized she was getting the upper hand (no pun intended) on her Arachnos-trained twin. A spark lit up at that point and would not be squashed.
Through various connections, she arranged to have her arms removed, both mechanical and organic, at the shoulders for a replacement set that she'd designed in her free time. There were some alterations to be had, but her wish was eventually granted.
Pain ate at her elation, but she remained firm in the belief that she had just recreated herself as someone strong enough that very few would find her a sniveling victim again.
It took a good two years of training for her to realize the full capabilities of her new limbs. Petty crimes became easy money and so she moved into larger rackets. Never did she stick with anyone for too long, but her ethic of keeping silent about prior employers and activities made her marketable to the seedier crowds.
She received an additional upgrade last summer to a new set of lighter, sturdier, arms from Lenny in return for babysitting duties so that he and his wife could have some desperately needed alone time.
Papa
It was about this time that Papa Laroni approached her in the Pocket D with a challenge at arm wrestling. Standing easily 7' tall and about as broad as a barn door, it was obvious the enormous mobster didn't think much about this slender girl who was playing at cybernetics.
Without breaking a sweat, Holly came out on top. Her prize was an offer to join him as an officer of his gang.
She dressed the part, decked out in a business suit with the arms cut off, a tie, and her trademark green locks cut short around her ears.
It was pure luck and gut instinct that had warned her to bail just before the shots rang out. The drive-by shooting had slaughtered the entire gang at their weekly poker game, save for the young woman that had 'gone for a beer' and simply never returned.
Molly's Choice
A mere week later, Holly's twin sent her a text message. The two hadn't been in any kind of real contact for months at this point and it was a bit of a surprise for her. 'Met a hero, leaving the Big-A. We need to talk.'
She hadn't been dependent on her sister's Arachnos salary for some time, but the news was still a shock to her. How does one simply leave the 'Big-A'?
Holly made it a point to frequent the Pocket D more often, waiting for the opportunity to speak to her sister without sending further dangerous messages back and forth. On the third night, she spotted the purple-hued uniform and crabpack of Operative Violet, Molly.
The two talked for hours about Molly's recent decisions. Not the least of these was the active choice to leave Arachnos in favor of her heroic boyfriend, Fen.
Holly was... pissed.
She stalked the nightclub, intent on finding this Fen guy and messing up his world for what she considered ruining her own.
Strange Associations
In a strange twist of events, Holly came across the news that her twin had people gunning for her. Some people that didn't care for turncoats against Arachnos. It wasn't long before the attacks began. In a desperate move to help, despite her protests, Holly underwent a small makeover to bring herself back to identical with Molly.
Of course, that didn’t mean that Holly would refrain from having a little fun at Molly's expense.
For starters, she took to tricking both Fen and another Arachnos fellow, Barnabas, into believing that she was Molly. The fun bit of chaos that followed took an interesting turn when Holly found herself inexplicably drawn to Barney.
Through a series of fights designed to mask a certain playfulness and desire on her part, the two became something of an interesting dynamic. It wasn't until she was biting through Barney's ring finger in an odd stand-off did she realized fully how strong the pull was.
Barnabas
Things caught up quickly and the two were soon a pair. They endured nearly daily bouts of drama, action, and adventure. Laughs and tears followed along steadily. Holly joined up with The Lightning Strike Initiative in order to be closer to him and his work, despite not being much of a heroic type herself.
It was only through borrowing Molly’s ID that Holly was able to even enter Paragon City in the first place, let alone work within the city limits.
She made friends, company she could keep when Barney was busy. But, eventually, the shiny newness began to tarnish and dull with this life she’d chosen. Her jealousy with his constant attention given to other women did nothing to make her life happier either.
In particular, she detested how much time the man she loved was spending with a particular blue demoness and the bond that the two shared through a deal he’d struck with her. Often, it seemed that Holly couldn’t spend a moment with him unless that demon was there as well.
Some time later, Holly began to suspect that she might be pregnant with Barney’s child. The two joked about the possibility while waiting out the time it was going to take for Holly to test. Names were picked out before they ever received the confirmation given to them by Tom of the LSI.
The news was met with excitement, if an anxious type. Barnabas and Holly hadn’t been seeing one another nearly long enough for children to be something they’d planned. For her part, Holly didn’t see herself as the motherly type. But, the pair decided that she would go on with the pregnancy, unable to bear the thought of terminating it no matter what the changes it would make to their futures.
Through meeting Altrisse, Holly found a solution to a new problem. Her mechanical arms weren’t suitable for a new mother, she’d decided. She could feel nothing through them and it frightened her that she might harm her newborn infant whenever he or she came into the world.
Altrisse performed a type of fey “surgery” that re-grew a pair of genuine, organic, arms for Holly – complete with every tiny freckle that she would have naturally had.
Holly’s biggest regret was that she wouldn’t be as strong, anymore, and more susceptible to harm should anyone attack her. The answer to this problem came from an unlikely source. The same demon that Holly despised for her closeness to Barney gave Holly a gift of metal knuckle-dusters. She still will wear them to this day, whenever feeling threatened.
The other gift that Holly received was the news that she was carrying Barney’s son, courtesy of a little fey divination.
Cold
Any kind of joy that Holly should have felt through her pregnancy was diminished by the events playing out around her.
The deal that Barnabas had struck with the demoness now threatened to take him away. What Holly saw as a deathwish, a way for him to ‘escape’ her and the responsibility of their child, he saw as a chance to save the world and be forever remembered as a hero.
Despite Molly’s attempted intervention, another deal with the demoness that led to Holly’s son being given supernatural protection, Barnabas LeVite was killed during a fouled-up mission in St. Martial.
Holly fell into a strange serenity while she waited for his return. She would spend hours in bed, curled up, talking to her child and clutching the ring Barney had entrusted to her, his mother’s.
