For everybody's knowledge....this is an evolving storyline...and most of it isn't written yet....so please bear with me. If this character is inspired by anyone....he would be a little bit Batman, a little bit Cleric Preston from Equilibrium, but in many ways probably mirrors my Paladin from Everquest more than anything else.

Birth and Childhood

Infractus Veneratio as he is now known was born as Sorin Maraveil on March, 21 1983 in Marseille, France to Guy and Mieke Maraveil. His father, Guy, was the last surviving heir of the Maraveil line, an ancient merchant and banking family that still held pretensions to the titles they were technically privy to. His mother was a German national whose parents had abandoned her at the age of 14. They met while studying at the University of Edinburgh, and were married soon after. Sorin and his twin sister, Samantha, are the couples only living issue.

As young children, Sorin and his sister Samantha lived with their mother in the family's villa outside Marseille. They were instructed in all the classics; philosophy, rhetoric, languages, history, and economics from a young age. Their father very rarely made an appearance, coming for Christmas and occasional holidays and birthdays. He spent most of his time in Paris, London, Tokyo, and New York monitoring his various investments and financial interests.

As a child, Sorin showed amazing aptitude in all areas of his studies. He proved to be an excellent equestrian, as well as being highly proficient at a number of sports, and having an incredible head for number and card games. It quickly became apparent to his mother that Sorin was far more intelligent than normal children his age, with abilities bordering on if not realizing levels of genius. She spent most of her time working on studies of human behavior and sociology, the greatest of which, Western Sunrise, won her the Pulitzer Prize. Recognizing the inherent genius in her son, as well as the inherited business acumen of his father and the liberal arts skills of his mother, Mieke Maraveil made sure that her son was to be given the best education available.

At the age of seven, Sorin was shipped to a boarding school in Inverness, Scotland for gifted youth. Here, his already impressive intelligence was quickly realized and augmented by his teachers. By the age of ten, Sorin was reading and writing at a graduate level and already beginning scientific inquiries far beyond his years. This is when tragedy struck. Sorin's mother was involved in a fatal car accident while visiting Avignon with Samantha. She died in the ICU of the nearby hospital with only Samantha by her side. Neither Sorin nor his father Guy were able to see her before she died. Mieke Maraveil died at the young age of 45. Mieke's death had a devastating effect on both Sorin and his father. Guy Maraveil made every attempt to remove everything that reminded him of his departed wife, and this included his children. Though they had led very separate lives, Guy and Mieke had been very much in love. At the ages of ten, Samantha and Sorin were sent to Berlin to continue their studies. Their care was given over to a Governess, Emile Gusten, who was to take care of all their needs while away at school. It was at the death of his mother that Sorin's life began to take a turn for the worse.

Continuing Education

After the death of his mother and his enrollment at school in Berlin, Sorin's attitudes towards his education and activities changed. Where before he had been enthusiastic and excited about learning and improving himself, he now looked on his mentors and superiors with bitterness and disdain. Part of the problem was that he had by this point far outstripped his teachers in basic theories and conceptual understanding. He was able to grasp extremely esoteric and complex subjects as if he had studied them for years. His sister Samantha, though lacking Sorin's natural genius, seemed to adjust far better to her new environment. Even though she did not have the years of experience dealing with boarding schools that Sorin had, she seemed to fit into her new situation quickly. She made friends quickly and did well in all of her studies. Sorin on the other hand became a social outcast. He rarely left his room to do anything but go to the library or his lab. He received constant detentions and infractions for not going to class - steadfastly maintaining that he did not need to go to classes to be able to understand the material or pass the tests. The fact that he was right did not stop the administration from continually punishing him. The only thing keeping them from abjectly ejecting him from the institution was his father's immense fortune and political clout, as well as the fact that his sister was one of the most successful and popular students at the school.

At the age of 15, the school had finally had their fill of Sorin's alternative views to his education. After a small incident involving actively humiliating a Western Civilization teacher over a point of political philosophy, followed by Sorin berating the man's intelligence and logical reasoning in front of 15 other students, the school's Deans decided they had had their fill of Sorin Maraveil. Upon the threat of expulsion, Guy Maravail threatened to pull out Samantha from the school, as well as to back out of all financial obligations and donations that had been promised. A number of his business partners also held seats on the school's Board of Regents, including the Provost, and an alternative solution was agreed upon. Sorin was granted a diploma from the school, Samantha would remain enrolled, and Guy Maraveil agreed to pay 1,400,000 pounds to the school in order to help build a new library and performing arts center.

After leaving school in Berlin, Sorin was given over to the charge of Marcus Merovich. Merovich was a low-level associate of his father, and considered it a promotion to be the warder and mentor of Baron Maraveil's son. With Merovich acting as guardian, Sorin embarked for San Francisco, where he spent time studying medicine and pharmaceuticals with the staff at the University of San Francisco. Though the University was reticent to allow a youth of 15 access to their facilities, and they absolutely refused to enroll him at the school, his ability to grasp the concepts and even assist some of the researchers persuaded many of the individual professors to rally for his privileges at the school. After turning 16 a number of prestigious universities accepted Sorin into joint undergraduate and graduate programs. Despite the admonitions of his father (who wanted him to attend a prestigious British college) Sorin choose to stay in the United States for his schooling and enrolled at University in Washington DC. His father threatened to remove his son's financial backing if he did not comply with his wishes, however thanks to prudent financial protections installed in the living trust of Guy and Mieke Maraveil at the birth of the children Sorin was provided with enough independent monetary means to take care of his own life for the time being. At this time, Marcus Merovich was dismissed as Sorin's guardian. Merovich was ultimately dismissed from his father's company (rumors abounded that the Baron held Merovich responsible for Sorin's refusal to comply with his father's will while in America).

The College Years

The years Sorin spent at University were in many ways the height of his genius. His rebellion against institutionalized authority seemed to be decreasing, and his willingness to work within a system seemed to be developing. The willful, disobedient, troubled youth of his boarding school days was slowly but surely being replaced by a workaholic, borderline obsessive student and researcher. The first year and a half of his time at University blew by with little incident. Sorin excelled at his studies and joined a small circle of close friends. His grades were exemplary and his relationships with his professors were based on a feeling of mutual understanding and respect. In many ways these first two years of college were the beginnings of Sorin's mature life; a time where he accepted responsibility for his own actions and understood that people stand on an equal footing as people regardless of inherent natural talent.

Much of Sorin's mental stability during this time was due to his relationship with Jennifer Collins. Jennifer was an international relations major from San Diego, California whom Sorin had met during the first months of his freshman year. In Jennifer, Sorin recognized a kindred mind and spirit, and their relationship bloomed into a brushfire romance. Towards the end of their sophomore year, with Sorin still at the age of 17, Jennifer was forced to withdraw from university. Her family had lost the ability to support her at college, and she needed to go home to California to help the family survive. Sorin was faced with the difficult decision of abandoning his studies, or abandoning his youthful love. Ultimately he decided, in his youthful pride, that his research was more important, and he let Jennifer leave without a second thought. Although Jennifer wanted him to come with her, she loved him enough to not want to force him away from the university he loved. Had she but asked him to come, he almost certainly would have dropped everything and gone to be with her, but the irony was she never asked. So Sorin and Jennifer parted, not to speak again.

Humanus Diluculo

After Jennifer left, Sorin began to exhibit some of the traits of his youth once more. His exuberance for his studies started to fade, and the overweening arrogance that had made him so hard to deal with in his high school days began to resurface. Sorin's interaction with his friends began to fade, and Sorin spent the majority of his time in the school's biochemistry laboratory. Sorin spent so much time here in fact, that he took to sleeping in the building's lounge when he could sleep in the first place. It was in these days that his rampant insomnia developed, an affliction that haunts him to this day.

Sorin then stopped attending classes.....he was enrolled in them but never attended either classes or exams. What no one knew, teacher or friend, was that Sorin was developing something of his very own using the school's facilities. Sorin had been overcome by an obsession to improve himself. He wanted to make himself better than anyone could be....at everything. Using cultures at the school's lab, and culminating over four years of secret work done at laboratories in Washington and San Francisco, Sorin began to create workable prototypes of a serum. This serum, which he dubbed Humanus Diluculo..."Human Dawn"....Mk. I, theoretically acted as a permanent mental and physical enhancer that focused on accelerating muscle growth, sinew flexibility, and mental capacity by changing nerve signals and chemical compositions within the mind and body. Sorin fabricated Mk. I on October, 27 2000 at the University bio-chem lab.

As the fall semester drew to a close, Sorin appeared for his finals....which he aced.... in the hopes of staying enrolled long enough to have access to the laboratories for just a little bit longer. The University placed Sorin on academic probation, due to his dismal classroom showing, under the instruction that if he did not improve his grade-point within the next semester, his time at the University would come to an end. Sorin ignored these warning, and spent even more time working on his serum prototype. In a typical moment of personal arrogance and percieved irony, Sorin decided that the first test subject for his new serum...if it truly was meant create the best human possible.....could be none other than himself. On March, 21 2001 at 10:43 PM, Sorin Maraveil injected himself with Humanus Diluculo Mk. II.iv.

BEEP.....BEEP.....BEEP.....BEEP.....BEEP

What's that sound.....quiet.....why is it so quiet.....why can't I open my eyes?

.......

Where am I......what day is it......still can't see.....Diluculo.....it must have paralyzed me.....I was so sure.....how could I have been wrong......so tired.......must sleep.....

.......

"Where am I?"

"You're in the Memorial Hospital ICU....you've been out for quite a while."

"What's that you're giving me?"

"Something to help you sleep. You need rest more then anything right now. Go to sleep now.."

"I don't want to sleep....I ...need to.....get.....back......get back.....get.......baaaaa......."

Sorin spent 3 months in the hospital recovering from his premature self-experiment. Once he was released by the attending physicians, he seemed to be in better then perfect health. The only difference that any doctor could find was that his hair had been blanched white by the experience, and they attributed that to shock.

Despite his escape from serious harm, the fallout from the Diluculo incident was swift. Apparently, after taking the serum, Sorin had effected the burning down of half of the laboratory building...causing millions of dollars in damage and countless dollars in research to be lost. Of course this led to Sorin's expulsion from the University....but there were still criminal charges to be discussed. The University knew that their insurance would cover almost all the damages to their facilities. However, this did not stop the considerations of human greed. They agreed not to file criminal charges against Sorin Maraveil.....but in return he had turn over all of his research notes and make a substantial contribution to the university. This substantial contribution turned out to be the exact amount remaining extant in his available trust. So Sorin made a "donation" of 18.35 million pounds sterling to the University's endowment. In regards to his research notes....Sorin swore that all the notes must have been lost in the laboratory fire. On top of this, he made claims of localized amnesia....swearing he was unable to remember large portions of his life. He even submitted to a polygraph administered by the university. Placated, charges were not filed against Sorin....however....for the first time in his life he found himself homeless and penniless.
