My Power Girl/Supergirl tribute character, Kara was a test to see which I preferred - Peacebringers or Warshades. Obviously, she won the toss-up. And then I realized I don't have the patience to try and level a squishie squid. Any resemblance to pre-existing characters with the names I've used for Kara and her family are coincidental. I didn't mean to copy anyone's concept or idea. Blame the Pancamo Satellite™.

History

The youngest in a family of established heroes, Kara had tried her hardest to avoid the family tradition. Her powers emerged when she was barely 12, and their strength and the rigors of puberty left many scars on her psyche. Kara had the bad luck of coming out a step behind in most situations; like a bull in a china shop. She wasn't too good with academics, nor sports, or artistic pursuits. The things she could do well were by herself, and fumbled terribly if there was an audience anywhere near.

Her parents gently encouraged the girl to try many things, and eventually helped cure Kara of the worst of her self-defeatist attitude. In a moment of bravery, she registered at Hero Corps under the name Barricade Girl, to honor her mother. She saw very little success as a heroine, although many helped encourage her.

She'd only been working as a hero for a year when the Rikti returned to Paragon. Her parents came out of retirement to help in the fight, and her brothers even returned from their jobs to lend a hand. Kara did her best, and finally achieved a shining moment of glory when she stopped a bus from striking a cornered family in King's Row during one wave of the alien invasion.

Unfortunately, the building adjacent to where Kara was standing was struck with a bomb, and she was seemingly buried under tons of brick and mortar. Rescuers searched for three days, and the Medicom system was monitored intensely before Freedom Corps formally decreed her Missing In Action.

She emerged from the wreckage some time after, having bonded with a stray, weak Kheldian named Starbane. He had offered to merge, to save them both, and she'd accepted. He became her best friend and confidant, always guiding her through the worst situations.

Kara's bad luck, however, made a second appearance - working to thwart a Council plot, she was instead captured and subjected to a great many tests, in an attempt to better understand the nature of Peacebringers. In the process, they managed to sever the bond that melded the energy being and girl. The trauma following the separation put Kara into something of a berzerk rage, and she managed to break her way free of her captors and return to her family.

Her only plans now are to rescue Starbane from The Council, by any means possible.

Family

Doc Cesium

Doc Cesium
Dr. Jacob James, a brilliant chemist, began his heroic career in the 70's. Now retired from crime-fighting, he's a head researcher with a private pharmaceutical firm based in Founder's Falls. While retired, he retains connections within both Hero and Freedom Corps, often used as a reference for strange chemical occurrences and his knowledge of illicit drugs like Superadine and Rage. A side-project of his is researching the Kheldian/human symboiate bond, which piqued his curiosity since the alien race first appeared. As such, Kara is often brought along to seminars and lectures at the university.

He is the provider of Mamushi's various pharmaceuticals.

Lady Barricade

Lady Barricade
Hanna James (née Monroe), a woman capable of both bench-pressing a pair of Panzer tanks, and equally great compassion. She, too, began her hero career in the 70's, but retired after Kara's birth to be a stay-at-home mother.

Born in a suburb of Charleston, North Carolina, Hanna's mutant powers manifested shortly after her 14th birthday. Over the course of a year, she had a tremendous growth spurt which shot her from a mere 5' to a whopping 6'6". She currently tops about 7', and never discloses her weight. She was a noted athlete in her hometown, acquiring a scholarship to U.N.C. where she achieved a B.F.A. in Painting. After college she moved up to Paragon City to put her super powers to good use, working alongside many of the notable heroes of the day.

Rebound

Rebound
Thomas James, the eldest child of the James family, never has much ambition as a hero. However, once his powers manifested he was more than happy to put them to use cleaning up the streets of his hometown. He was an athlete in high school, lettering in both Track & Field and Football, and graduated near the top of his class.

He spent two years after high school working as a hero, then entered Boston University for his Law degree. Recently passing the bar exam, he was hired by a law firm in Washington, D.C. - Hens, MacManus, & Fitzgerald, a private firm noted for working alongside of Vanguard and other metahuman groups. He hopes to help promote stricter rules for licensed heroes, and to help curtail the influence of the Rogue Isles.

The Siege Engine

The Siege Engine
John "Johnny" James, the middle child, had a much less serious personality during his childhood. Fond of jokes, pranks and everything in-between, Johnny was always seen by others as less-talented than his brother. However, in his mid-teens he and a friend were in a traumatic car accident, which resulted in the amputation of most of his left arm, and from the elbow-down on his right.

His personality changed overnight. He refused his father's initial offer to contact a cybernetics firm to craft prosthetics. He became very grim and bitter and sank into a depression that seemed to grow worse as time went by. Kara wouldn't give up on him, though, and through her daily badgering and some very good therapists, they managed to bring Johnny around and out of his depression. He finally accepted the cybernetics and hit the streets, determined to make sure his accident was never repeated.

His daredevil personality made him some contacts with people in with the stunt world, and won him several small-time jobs on various movie sets. Johnny proved to be reliable, fearless, and he was well-liked by his various employers. Climbing up the ladder of fame, he has met dozens of celebrities and has a name in Hollywood for not only being good at what he does, but humility as well.

It was also Johnny's fault Kara is so into comic books.

Barricade Girl

Barricade Girl
Kara's old alias, had a poor reputation as a hero. Unsure of herself, she made very little progress although touted to have great potential. She was reported M.I.A. after the Second Rikti Invasion for two weeks, and has only recently re-emerged under the new 'Kara Starbane' alias.

Starbane

A Kheldian soldier who came to help against the Nictus and their allies in the Council, he was seriously wounded in the Second Rikti invasion and lost his previous symbiont partner. Too weak to create another bond, he drifted the city streets for days until fate and chance had him in the same area of King's Row when the bomb mortally wounded Kara. He bullied the dying girl back to life and begged for her to take the Bond. He now faces the challenge of guiding his reluctant partner to accept her new abilities. He feels very lucky to have found someone like Kara; while fragile in confidence, she has a strong spirit.

Affiliations

Currently she's a member of the Dawnstride Syndicate, a group of young heroes under license from Freedom Corps to collect on bail-jumpers and the like. Called "bounty hunters" by some ignorant of their purpose, the Dawnstriders are currently facing some rather tough odds - namely Masume Yasuda. Of recent, the group known as the Neverenders has hired the 'Striders to serve as security for their airship.

While she was Barricade Girl, Kara had a few contacts within the Corps, although very few friends. One of the few people she considers a friend, outside of the Dawnstriders, is Mamushi. The circumstances of their acquaintance can be traced back to her father, however she trusts the older woman implicitly.

Personality

(Stuff!)

Powers

Former Abilities

Kara was once capable of great feats of strength, on par with her mother. She was also highly resilient to most forms of damage, including fire and toxic materials. Since bonding with Starbane, her 'natural' abilities have diminished from their peak performance. Kara is still strong, but at peak mundane human performance, rather than capable of supporting tons. She's a bit harder to hurt, but can be bruised and knocked around with enough force.

Peacebringer

Now a solider for the Kheldian cause, Kara exhibits a grasp of manipulating Kheldian energies. Guided by Starbane, she has been able to focus her internal energies into potentially devastating blasts, personal shields and self-regeneration. She can also take the Bright Nova form, allowing her to utilize greater finesse with the alien energy.

Abilities

Having tried many hobbies in her youth, Kara can do a little bit of everything in a mediocre fashion. She actually has some decent potential in playing the guitar, and takes pride in that she can play Heart's "Barracuda" flawlessly. Kara likes to bake, use pastels, play soccer, beat her brother Johnny in a variety of video games, and is an avid fan of many television shows. From her brother, she has an autograph collection from many recent Hollywood celebrities, her prize piece being a signed 8 x 10 of Johnny Depp. Kara also likes literature of all varieties - from comics to tawdry romance novels to translations of Greek epics.

She also likes to keep up-to-date with local history and lore, often secretly reading her family's reports from old missions. Kara tried to keep up with celebrity heroes of Paragon, but nowadays doesn't have much time to keep track of them all.

Weaknesses and Limitations

Her lack of self-confidence still plagues her. And let's not even get into those damned Nictus, Quantums, Voids and Gunners, 'kay?

Equipment

Her mitts.
