16th President of the United States |
When Richard Nixon struck a deal with Nemesis to fake his own death and reemerged as a Rogue Isles supervillain, the spirit of America's greatest president knew the time had come to return to the world. Animating a scale replica of his own Memorial statue, Abraham Lincoln is here to trample out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored and loose the fateful lightnings of His terrible swift sword.

Supergroup: The Legendary (Rank: Rumor)
Heroes
- John Brown's Body (occasional ally)
Villains
- Nemesis (Lincoln has a grudge against the Prussian Prince that dates all the way back to the Civil War, and is more than ready to strike a blow against the man who sold cavalry automata to the Confederacy all those years ago.)
- The Head of Nixon (Lincoln frequently opposes the schemes of this villainous ex-President, even though it seems they are fated never to meet face-to-face.)
- Rumor has it that the forces of Hell have called up Lincoln's bane in the form of a giant stone John Wilkes Booth who even now stalks the Rogue Isles and Paragon City, looking for another chance at revenge.
Personality
Mr. Lincoln remains uncompromising, stubborn, and plain-spoken in death as he was in life.
Powers
The Lincoln Memorial is an eight-foot-tall replica of the more famous (and much larger) Memorial statue, animated by the spirit of Abraham Lincoln himself. Most of his superhuman abilities stem from his stone form.
Invulnerability
As a magically-reinforced marble statue, the Memorial has remarkable resistance to most forms of injury and cannot easily be stunned or immobilized.
Stone Melee
Mr. Lincoln's marble fists strike with the speed and power of an avalanche. He also carries a giant stone warhammer and a Ghost Slaying Axe that he has dubbed the Railsplitter.
Additional Powers
Abe can perform a minor Song of Heaven that weakens his enemies' defenses.
Leaping
The Memorial gets about town in prodigious bounds, leaping from rooftop to rooftop with a grace one would not expect from a two-thousand-pound chunk of marble.
Abilities
Mr. Lincoln is a consummate politician and lawyer, and has maintained an encyclopedic knowledge of world affairs during his 143 years in the afterlife; he has a knack for judging the long-term political ramifications of major military/supergroup actions. He can deliver impressive speeches on short notice, and can still split fence rails like nobody's business.
Weaknesses and Limitations
The Memorial has little resistance to psionic powers.
Equipment
Mr. Lincoln purchased a jump pack more out of technological curiosity than anything else, and a Pocket D pass in hopes of achieving a greater understanding of 21st century culture by hanging out in the bar.
Character History
Upon his premature death in 1865, the irreligious 16th President of the United States was a bit surprised (though not displeased) to learn that Heaven in fact existed. Unwilling to move on to the Higher Heavens, the true afterlife, while his beloved country was still reeling from the war, Lincoln accepted an offer to work for David, Archangel of Stone, whose purview includes the long-term stability of human cultures. Much to his annoyance, he was judged more useful as a political consultant in Heaven than as an active agent on Earth and was only rarely risked on groundside missions; this was compounded by the laws mandating covert operations for both Heaven and Hell so long as The Box was sealed.
The dawn of the new heroic age in 1930 loosened those restrictions considerably, but by then Lincoln had grown used to his position; he stayed behind a Heavenly desk until 2006, when Nemesis's involvement in the Rikti War came to light and Richard Nixon began a new career as a master villain. The combination of an old enemy's return and the desecration of the Presidency was too much to bear; Abe applied for permanent assignment to Paragon City as an active Saint of Stone and was granted it. He had had enough of sending young men off to die for the cause; it was time to take up arms himself.
Descending to an abandoned historical museum in The Hollows, Lincoln found a scale model of his Memorial statue and inhabited it using the Kyriotate Resonance of Stone, then made his way to City Hall and registered as "the Lincoln Memorial." After scouting several established superteams, Abe decided he could do the most good in The Legendary and contacted a very surprised Evangelia to request membership. Since then he has been rising through the security ranks and preparing for the day when he can confront Nemesis in person, delivering retribution for past wrongs with his mighty stone fists.
Battle Cries and Catch Phrases
"Of, by, and FOR the people!"
"Apart from that, the play was fine!"
Trivia
Despite inhabiting a stone statue, Mr. Lincoln retains full use of all five senses and can even eat, although he does not need to do so.Lincoln's "clothes" are simply part of the statue; he can't significantly alter his appearance, except by adding paint or gluing new costume parts on. He sometimes wears a stovepipe hat for old times' sake or publicity photos.
As a self-acknowledged dead man, Abe's legal status is peculiar. He is ineligible to hold political office, nor may he vote (except in Chicago). On the other hand, he's non-taxable.
Despite his up-to-date knowledge of history and politics, Abe has only a sketchy understanding of modern culture and technology; as part of the deal permitting him to return from the Afterlife, those memories have been suppressed and he has to learn to handle the twenty-first century from scratch.
