Lost Sorrow
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Born blind, Katie was looked after by her loving parents, George and Alice Kirks. Her parents always told her that she was special, and that she could change the world for the better if she put her mind to it. She truly believed them, up until the day they died.
When she reached the age of 15, an attack by the Rikti had leveled the city block where they lived, burying the three of them under tons of rubble. Katie was the only one who survived, but that survival went unnoticed, as he rescuers had less than honorable intentions. While the Crey in that area were helping to rescue those trapped during the attack, they were also looking for candidates for their new Paragon Protector program, and with Katie being orphaned, and presumably killed in the attack, her kidnapping would go unnoticed.
She became a focal point in several top secret experiments, some of which involved temporal displacement and mental training. She gained unimaginable powers as a result of their scientific tinkering, but she failed to control them well... at least while the Crey were watching. In the solitude of her cell, she usually spent hours crying to herself, both from the pain of the Crey's experiments on her as well as mourning her parents and fighting the loneliness of her situation.
It was in that cell she created imaginary friends, almost in a literal sense: using her tears and what little dust was in the room, she created the closest thing she could come up with to a companion, and she gave him a name: Ash. At first, Ash only appeared in her cell, but after a good number of tests, Ash suddenly began taking on a life of his own, and broke Katie out of the Crey laboratory and completely wiping out everyone in it.
Katie managed to stumble back onto the streets of Paragon City, only to be apprehended by several heroes. Believing her to be some previously unknown criminal, they locked her in a secure cell within the Zig until a trial could be held.
Except that was when the Arachnos attacked in search of the Destined Ones. Hitching a ride on board one of the Arachnos Fliers, Katie wound up in the Rogue Isles, where she was let loose on the villains with the blessings of Arachnos.
Referred to the Lost Sorrow, Katie was quite alone, with only Ash to talk to at first. But then other personalities emerged, some more and more prone to violent behavior as she lost more and more of her own mind. She now struggles with a variety of mental disorders, but is guided by a desire to do some good in the world, the way her parents always told her: to change it for the better.
Despite her own problems, this orphaned blind girl has become more than a handful for both heroes and villains alike. She does her best to do good, but if you get in her way, she, or Ash, will deal with you, one way or another.
