History
Birth and early life
Mako is the result of the forced union between an Incubus demon and a Cherubim angel. The precise details of this matter are unknown to her however. Though, when she was born, it was demanded that she be destroyed so as not to taint heaven with an abomination among them. Her mother, overwrought at the idea, instead opted to contact a rather ‘unusual’ monastery on Earth.
Its location was secluded and its teachings were unique and mostly unknown. Mako was left there… Unaware of whom her parents were. The monks were left with little more than the minute details of what her heritage was, and that she was to be brought up fair.
The Monastery
The Monastery was nameless, and followed a rather unique faith. The main philosophy was self discipline of oneself in all things, and ensure perfect self control to further that which is more efficient and useful.
Emotions were a prime display of weakness. Mako was quickly taught, in her use, precisely how even the tiniest facial expression could open oneself up to attack. A smile displays something you value as good, allowing it to be threatened. A frown shows your enemy precisely what you find unpleasant, allowing them to use it against you. Mako learned of this quickly, and excelled in suppressing her emotions.
Secondarily, the monks taught her that the true goal in life is absolute efficiency and usefulness to the progress and survival of society. Those that are useless are little more than baggage that must be disposed of, or forced to be useful. As such, the Monastery condoned slavery of criminals, and the killing of those too handicapped to prove to be useful.
The Monastery also possessed a small farm and vineyard that was tended to in an extraordinary fashion; Using human and animal bodies to till soil that was otherwise most infertile for growing crops. Though this was mostly done within certain guidelines, as only monks that had passed naturally would be ground for the crop, or livestock that outlived their usefulness.
The Slaughter
When Mako was 19, she was assigned to cleaning duty in the main hall. She spied several children playing a game she found to be most ‘useless’, and when one child accidentally knocked over and damaged some cleaning equipment, she put her lessons to use.
The child was not even 6 years old. With her inhuman strength, she carried the helpless one off to a grinding vat, and liquefied the poor child alive to serve as fertilizer for the vineyard.
When her actions were discovered, the monks attempted to subdue her for judgment. At this, Mako proved to have been taught too well, perceiving this as all the monks hindering progress, she single handedly beat them all into submission, liquefied them accordingly, and fertilized the vineyards for the greatest crop output the monastery had ever seen.
On the Run
After that season, the Monastery lost all function. When Mako traded the last of the wine and grape crop to a traveling vendor, it was discovered immediately what she had done. And has since escaped to less lawful regions… The Rogue Isles.
She arrived via a smuggler transport in Mercy, where she, at first, received significant aid from local Arachnos operatives in an attempt to recruit her into their cause. She was uninterested in their petty political struggles, seeing it as a waste of her time. Instead… She spent her time doing small jobs that she deemed progressive and useful, for small amounts of money to keep herself going.
The Pocket Dimension
She discovered Pocket D quickly from acquaintances in Mercy. She found it to be the best opportunity to learn and understand social interaction and figure out precisely how to communicate with others effectively, as nobody seemed to speak in a similar fashion to her.
At first, nobody would speak with her, as her manner of speech was considered rude and blunt. However, all that changed when she spied a small fairy girl sitting in the rafters above the bar, all alone and merely observing… Little did Mako realize, that was the catalyst to a drastic change in how she viewed life.
She interacted with the fairy, discovering her name to be “Listia” and that she was immensely timid of others, prone to simply watch other people interact as opposed to interacting with them herself. Mako joined her in observation…
The defining moment arrived when the entity known as Podge Hodge approached the two of them, presenting to Mako a small hamster before leaving. Mako inquired with Listia as to what the purpose of a hamster was. When Listia explained the hamster was pretty much just some useless creature, Mako broke its neck and chucked it away, which caused Listia to freak out.
Listia explained to Mako the value of life. How even though, despite the fact that the hamster was just some tiny creature with no notable practical value, it could still serve other uses to others. As it could make someone happy as a pet or companion. Mako found this confusing, but somehow logical… And for the first time started questioning her past…
The Epiphany
Mako spent much time with Listia. Her peaceful nature as a fairy was rubbing off on the angel/demon hybrid. And when Listia discovered that Mako had killed so many innocent monks, she berated Mako, pointing out that she was in no place to judge usefulness and explained how their families must have felt. For the first time in years, Mako displayed emotion, in the form of tears…
As time went on, she began to care for Listia, in a fashion previously completely unknown to her. Any attempt of harm on Listia’s life incited a protective attitude from Mako that even dwarfed her value of her own safety. And as such, Listia’s value of life caused Mako to value life to the point where she refused to ever again hurt someone without provocation.
The Union
Listia had many suitors for a time. And in that time, Mako was merely a friend that watched for her and guarded her from those that sought to take advantage of her. In the end, virtually all of her suitors were found to be inadequate.
Mako was not pleased, only wanting Listia to be happy. And while speaking to one another atop a building in Port Oakes… They gradually spoke more in depth about themselves, eventually resulting in a kiss that blossomed a love that would last to this day.
Organizations and Affiliations
Der Chantry
Mako spent a small amount of time working for an occult called “Der Chantry” run by a renegade Succubus. It proved to be very useful in her understanding of demons and magic, even learning a great deal of the demonic language “Infernal”, and is able to speak with a light accent.
However, a demonic entity within the Chantry had taken advantage of Listia’s pacifistic nature, infecting her with a magical affliction in her hand. This caused Mako to lose all loyalty to Der Chantry. Mako has since taken this affliction upon herself, and her left hand now bears a glowing scar that hurts perpetually, as though constantly being burned by scalding flames. An ever present reminder to herself that defending her love will come at a great price.
Phoenix Insurrection
After escaping the treachery of the occult, Mako has recently discovered solace in an underground movement against Arachnos. There she has met many an individual she can trust, and has since developed a communal sense towards her new allies.
Paragon Police Department
After consorting with several heroes encountered through Pocket D, Mako is working on clearing her name and atoning for the damage done in her past. Currently, she works for the Paragon City police as an honorary officer, hoping to obtain enough money to move herself, Listia, and her friend Salazar to Paragon permanently.
Friends
(Feel free to edit these entries if you are the player of these characters, with personal quotes.)
Listia
Cailyn “Listia” Bell. Born a human, turned fairy, and back into a human again. (Long story) Currently Mako’s lover and absolute most trusted friend. The only one she allows herself to display all of her emotions to, without restraint. The two have been through a tremendous amount of history together, through good, bad, happy and sad. Mako hopes that the rest of her days are spent with her.
Ssalassar
A man turned into a snake creature by a mad scientist. When Mako met Salazar, she didn’t see the snake freak most people tend to. Instead she saw just a person. During a barroom brawl in Pocket D, Salazar got into a fight with a caped hero called “Ghost Prowler”. Mako stood in his defense, fighting the cape, losing her right arm in the conflict. (It got better, see below.) Since then, Mako and Salazar have grown much closer to one another, although Mako tends to condescendingly look upon him in a more maternal fashion, worrying about him more than anything. Currently, Salazar is one of the few people she allows herself to ease restraint on her emotions with.
"Ah man, Mako'sssss loyal ta th' end. There ain't nobody elssssse I'd rather have watchin' my backsssside than 'er inna ssstresssful sssituation. I think she'sssss repressssin' her emotionsssss ta an unhealthy level, but I ain't exactly one ta talk. Ssssomethin' tha' big'ssss gotta be a perssson'sssss own choice, an' I trusssst Mako'sssss judgement." -Salazar
Tryphis
A woman Mako barely knows, yet trusts. After losing her right arm defending Salazar from a hero that would have surely killed him, Tryphis appeared in Der Chantry, happily curing Mako of her dismembered limb by injecting her with her own blood and spending several hours with her attempting to shape and mold a new arm for her. Since then, Mako rarely sees Tryphis but still realizes that she owes this mysterious carnie a great deal.
Podge Hodge
A creature of pure chaos and one of the first people Mako interacted with. After getting to know Podge a great deal, she started to find a pattern to the insanity, and even discovered there was much more to the creature than she originally presumed. For such an unpredictable and potentially dangerous creature, she trusts Podge more than most would ever recommend, despite her better judgment, and considers him a close friend.
Thorn Roseblood
An incubus demon, not unlike her own father. Mako is impressed by Thorn in that he has thrown off the binding shackles of an incubus’ nature, and instead has opted for a much more noble lifestyle. She feels pity for him, in a way, in that his story is one of lost love. She respects his intentions, despite his often flirtatious attitude (Which she will willingly admit, she finds flattering), and considers him among her closer friends.
"Miss Mako is a very sweet woman, with her greatest fear being herself. I do enjoy her company, there are few things more rewarding then seeing a emotionaly repressed woman give a kind word, and I must admit its my goal to someday make her smile...Well, again anyways."-Thorn Roseblood, on Mako
Powers/Abilities
Strength
Mako possesses super strength that she inherited from her mother. Able to lift cars and knockback Malta Zeus Titans with ease, she is a difficult foe in battle. This ability is completely nullified whenever she is in human form. (To be explained another time.)
Willpower
Her experience among the monks in suppressing her emotions has worked wonders for her pain tolerance. She is only slightly tougher than a normal human on terms of whether or not her skin can be pierced or bones can be broken, and a gunshot to the right spot could easily spell her end. However, her ability to suppress pain allows her to keep on fighting, no matter how much damage she has received, until she is simply no longer able to function.
