Manaiakalani
The great fish-hook of Māui is called Manaiakalani, was to have created the islands of Hawaii. Legend has it that the Manaiakalani is a real artifact residing in the Haleakalā Volcano, that anyone who wields it would gain powers from the demigod Māui. The relic isn't necessarily evil, but devious by the nature of tricking others to do their bidding.
The Keeper
Puanani is a native Hawaiian that grew up on the island of Maui as a normal child enjoying the stories told by the many elders in her small town. One particular old man would occasionally speak of the Manaiakalani as the real thing, and it intrigued her. So she pressed him to tell her more about the artifact. He warned that she must keep this to herself and not let anyone else know about it. She obliged. He in return gave all the information he knew of the Manaiakalani. And even devised a way to get it.
Within the Haleakalā Volcano there is a small shrine near its inner core being stood guard by three statues of ancient Hawaiian warriors. Being accompanied by the old man, they encounter a night march where many ghosts are gathering about the shrine. Hoping not to be noticed by them they inched their way near the shrine to see the Manaiakalani on a small pedestal between the statues. Without thinking she quickly ran to the pedestal to pick it up only to have the spirits aroused by her presence. Expecting to be attacked she is left arm-length distance from them not coming any closer. A lone ti plant leaf is her hair, the old man had managed to slip it there without her notice.
"This is your power now," the old man said in his dying breathe. "I have held this secret far too long, now you are its keeper."

- Maui Flower is the first of three characters influenced by Polynesian lore, names, and places.
- Laughing aside, I expect a lot of 'poon' jokes because of Maui Flower's first name.
