Biography
Carla Wright was attending Paragon City University as an English Literature major. At the time she was a slight and introverted girl who had difficulty keeping up with others in athletic activities due to past illnesses. One day, one of her professors, Dr. Malin, approached her about being a test subject for a series of self-actualization tapes he created that the doctor claimed would improve her physical performance; even offering to compensate her for her time. Needing the extra money, Carla agreed to take part in the study. For a period of one week's time, Carla would sleep in the doctor's lab while listening to the subliminal tapes; then go about her regular classes and daily activities.
After a week of the subliminal therapy, Carla was stunned-she now possessed the physique and prowess of an Olympic-level athlete! She was now stronger, faster and tougher than even some of the members of the campus track team! Impressed with her progress, Dr. Malin presented her with an opportunity to demonstrate her abilities. He provided her with a costume designed to disguise her identity and asked her to go out into the Steel Canyon area and fight against a group of criminals she encountered. Unsure of the reasons for the test, Carla nonetheless did as the doctor asked and so covertly left the campus in search of a gang.
Carla didn't have to search far though, as she soon came upon a gang of the Outcasts, attempting to mug a hapless citizen. Carla threw herself at the gang-bangers, using her new found strength and agility to defeat the men. Just as she finished defeating the Outcasts, a lone hero came to the scene to congratulate her and offer assistance. Seeing the hero suddenly filled Carla with an uncontrollable desire to attack him; her mind filled with a continuous mantra "Heroes are the enemy! Kill all heroes!". Overcome with horror at what she was doing, she fled the scene and returned to Dr. Malin's lab. As she walked into the lab, Carla overheard her professor talking to another individual, praising his latest experiment in mind control and physical enhancement techniques; Carla herself!
Carla stormed into the lab and to her shock, saw her professor dressed in a uniform of the Council; and accompanied by two more such individuals! Having overcome her previous shock, Carla attacked her former professor and his companions and was able to subdue them. Staying behind for the police to come arrest them; then quickly leaving with copies of the doctor's notes once they arrived.
Carla discovered from his notes that Dr. Malin was in fact a scientist with the Council; and that his "self-actualization" technique was in fact an experimental program to produce enhanced soldiers for the Council at a quicker rate than their normal super-soldier serum methods. The subliminal tapes he had Carla listen to were in fact meant to brainwash Carla's mind, making her a loyal and obedient solder in the Council. The real part of the therapy was a special radiation treatment Dr. Malin had subjected her to during her sessions at the lab. The end result: the subject's physical attributes were enhanced to the peak of human development with no long-term ill effects; and without the side effects sometimes encountered with use of the super-soldier serum treatment many Council soldiers had undergone.
Carla was understandably shocked and outraged at the betrayal her professor had committed. But she then realized that something good did come out of the experiment: Carla had gained a new-found confidence and self-assurance thanks to the treatments. She also discovered within herself an inner strength she didn't realize she possessed before. For while the tapes she listened to were meant to break her spirit, they only managed to strengthen it against the ones who betrayed her. She decided from that day forward, that she vowed to use her new body and abilites to fight against those who would try to break not only the spirit of the people, but of the nation itself. And so, fashioning a new costume for herself, Carla Wright christened herself the National Spirit!
Although her crime-fighting career has only begun, National Spirit has gained the attention of the US government. As someone who is considered a National Personification, they hope to help her in her hero career, by providing her with assistance. Spirit has accepted their offer and has now begun a training regiment with Longbow to improve her fighting skills and tactical knowledge.

Dr. Malin, the scientist who performed the enhancement process on her, is obsessed with capturing her and bringing her fully into the Council's fold; seeing her as his property rather than as an independent human being.
