Early History
There were two children in the house out in County Clare. Two children and a mother and father in a town of 3,549. One of those two children was named Imelda. The other was named Colm. That is how it went. Colm was born 13 minutes ahead of Imelda and it is probably the only time he was the first in anything in the contest between the McCann twins. From that time on it was almost as if that time had been a mistake, and quite possibly, Colm should have been born second as well.
Time passed, as it did, fairly uneventfully. Neither child stood out in any particular way, aside from the fact that Imelda was almost guaranteed to come out ahead of Colm in any competition. And time did pass, years went by with no incident until one day they went along on a familiar walk. The pair was out in the countryside, along a winding road when they came across a single hare caught in a trap. Imelda turned her face from the sight but Colm stood watching the animal. He didn’t believe his eyes and didn’t speak of what he saw. Imelda heard it though. The creaking pressure of the spring as the weight of the metal pressed down upon it. The blood vanished. The brown fur was clear again, the blotchy dark patches vanished and Colm couldn’t say anything. And the hare hopped away.
“I felt it all” she told him later. “I felt the blade of the trap, I felt the wounds heal back together, the skin sewn up again.” They were 18 years old, and it was the 14th of April when Imelda’s psychic powers first appeared. You don’t forget a date that important. Simply being around Imelda was enough for her powers to take effect. She began her career innocently enough, gaining a local reputation. And people began arriving throughout the week. They were always seeking Imelda. But this isn’t about her. It isn’t about the 127 people she helped. Rather, it only involves 13 of those people.
It took a week from that moment Imelda helped the hare before Colm’s own psychic powers appeared. Second again. Colm never felt that sensation of another’s pain however, another’s wounds and the clarity which came from soothing the pain. He had something else though. Something he came to cherish far more. What others felt, their drives and baser instinct, was open for him to explore. He could feel their joy or sorry, their fears or stoicism and passion. It was there for him to experience. But he had to force it. It wasn’t open, like it was for Imelda. He had to push his way in, burrow through and the person too, could feel this.
What happens when he pushed too far? He didn't know. He never had tried. Though the temptation was there. Perhaps he could help them out. Colm began to tamper with those who visited the home one day. It was small things. He would simply switch their emotions. It just took a second. A single second and suddenly they felt relief. One for another one. It was simply, he just influenced them like his sister could. But their noses started to bleed. Slowly, a trickle down. They were gone within a day. He didn’t know these people. They came for help. He had tried to help in other ways. Surely they could stand to feel a little better. Feel a little brighter. But they continued to bleed. And it wouldn’t stop.
They would find out what happened. His sister would find out, he knew this. Eventually she did. And that was the end. The thirteenth person had died Imelda felt it immediately, but it wouldn't be until the night of the wake Imelda experienced her vision. It was her brother. Colm McCann fled the country, fled the garda and whatever justice would follow being captured. He had been asking around for where he could go. You can always find where a place to go if you know where to look. And once you get there, it is even easier to find the person you were looking for in the first place. It was on the 26th of October, 5 years from when Imelda first healed the hare. It is another date too important for Colm to forget.
ERA
There is always a time where you feel worthless in a new city. A time when you know no one, and have no way to know how to meet someone. But you get on and carry through. You ask around, see what work falls your way. That is the kind of work that isn't hard to find. You get it, complete it and scrape by, though it isn't the best to make a reputation for yourself. Well, a reputation worth having anyway. One which lives up to expectations. Though it isn't sure who had the expectation in Colm's case. Most likely it was just Colm himself setting them for himself. But these expectations are the reason him and the infamous Sebastian Kain ever crossed paths, so really, they are responsible for all that Colm became.
It wasn't to last though. Sebastian Kain vanished, leaving a power vacuum which quickly consumed the group. Again on his own, Colm took this hard. He had the chance to be somebody at last and it was all gone. The place he had worked to claim vanished. And he was left with nothing. While no one heard explicitly, it is assumed Colm retreated from the Rogue Isles following the implosion of ERA.
