Operative Brand
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Operative Brand's In-Game Bio:
"Dwight Thompson was a smuggler operating in Mercy Isles. On more than one occasion he was harassed by Arachnos Wolf Spiders, Operative Brand being his least favorite for his surly comments and frequent beatings. When Operative Brand decided it would be fun to push Thompson around again, the latter finally had enough. He killed the Wolf Spider in a fit of rage. Thompson knew he was in serious trouble for killing a member of Arachnos. He went to Alan Desslock for help. Desslock helped Thompson assume Brand's identity and sneak him into the ranks of the Spiders. Thompson wonders how long he can keep this charade going as he tries to learn to be an Arachnos soldier.... RP: Some players, like Fortunatas, will know he is not a real Arachnos soldier but may let him get away with it to see if he can succeed or not, or admire his moxxy for attempting this charade."
Never Judge A Man By His Shoes...
Hayden Thompson once said, "Never judge a man by his shoes, because you might be ignoring the great man wearing 'em". Young Dwight held those words his father spoke very close to his chest. Even when the young boy grew older, and into a life of questionable choices that lead to crime, Dwight still believed in those words, or at least the most street version of "Deeds Speak".
Being misjudged and thought little of importance was no stranger to Dwight. For those competing with him for lucrative smuggling deals in the Rogue Isles, assuming he was just some poor hard luck case with no chance of survival turned out to be a costly judgement call.
Even the Wolf Spiders and RIPs that patrolled Mercy Island figured he was a chump, a kick-ball to be played with. Operative Brand, the worst of them all, took particular delight in making Dwight his personal "meatbag" to punch around. But, like many others before him, Operative Brand pushed his luck too far when Dwight finally had enough. In a sudden flurry of fists and blows that actually cracked the Arachnos soldier's helmet, Dwight killed Operative Brand. Once again, the underdog turned the tables.
Shortly after he assumed the identity of Operative Brand, with the help of Alan Desslock, Dwight was asked to join the Arachnos Espionage Division. He thought he was finally going to get the respect he deserved. He fought alongside many senior members of this esteemed military group, showing he can deliver as good as they did, and assumed they respected him for the man he was. He would learn later during an invite to the Black Friday club that was not the case. Members of his own miltary group mocked him when he showed up in his usual street clothes. Once again, he was underestimated and overlooked as a nobody, just a punk wearing ratty old shoes.
As they snickered and taunted him at the entrance to the bar, he looked at them with murder in his eyes, and clenched his fists. While Dwight doesn't remember what stopped him from throwing the first punch, he remembered walking back to the AED barracks to clear out his footlocker and disappear into the night. Little did he realize his departure was watched by a mysterious Asian woman.
One More Reason To Watch His Back
Lord Recluse could care less about the politics of villian groups, both informal and formal, for as long as they did not interfere with his grand schemes for total world domination. But to the leaders of the groups themselves, the departure of members for whatever reason elicted varying reactions. While the response from most leaders would be "Whatever, don't let the door hit you on your way out", some may take it more seriously. The warning from Ara- shortly after she learned of his departure was clear.
"As soon as Matrix finds out, you'll be a deserter and we'll have to hunt you. so... just a heads-up.."
Dwight tried his best to leave on good terms. He left the AED enough salvage as a thank you for the membership with no hard feelings. Apparently that was not enough. Now he had one more reason to be paranoid about his situation.
His trepidation would not last for too long, however. The woman who watched his verbal blowout with the AED finally revealed herself at one of his trips to the AE building. Midnight Warning told him she could arrange it so the AED would not carry out it's promise to hunt him down: she'd just keep an eye on them and monitor their movements. In addition, she'd find him choice contracts and a new SG to join. All he had to do was run some errands for her from time to time.
Operative Brand accepted her offer and immediately felt the glare of the AED lift off his six. But "Momma did not raise no fool", as he always said. He took some time out to ask around ...discretely... about this mysterious woman. He found out two things.
The first was she has a reputation of being a broker and go-between for many villians and rogues, running a network to ensure she would have a secure power base within Grandville, without risk of exposing herself directly to her opponents in competition.
The second was that she was not alive.....
