Beginning
Kirk is the eldest of 3 children, and the only son of William and Sonya Harris. William worked for a shipyard in Independence Port for much of his life, leaving the raising of Kirk, Jennifer, and Maggie to his wife and father, a cantankerous old Irishman. Oftentimes he would be absent from the home for weeks at a time, depending on how busy work in the yards was. While he loved his family dearly, he felt it was his duty to provide for them, and bore the heartache of missing much of his children's younger years with the period's typical stoicism. Quincy Harris had also worked as a shipbuilder in his youth, helping build battleships for the British during the Second World War. As such, he understood his son's situation and feelings far more than he would ever let on, and happily stepped in to help raise them as best he could. It was, in a way, his opportunity to be the father he had never been able to for his own 6 children. He taught Kirk the value of hard work, honesty, responsibility, and integrity from a young age. Kirk loved his grandfather dearly, and when he died while Kirk was still a young man, he was deeply saddened. A few years later, William was badly hurt in an accident at the shipyard, crippled and unable to continue working. Kirk, freshly graduated from high school and with dreams of college filling his mind, found himself with a painful choice to make; follow his ambitions and attend the University, or go to work and help support his family. The lessons he'd learned from his grandfather were not lost on him, and he set out into the workforce, eventually finding work as an auto mechanic in King's Row. Almost everything he made in his first few years went back home, helping to support his family. It was during this time that he also met Megan Lake, the woman he would eventually nervously propose to over pizza in their favorite local resteraunt. Within a few years, they had two children of their own, Hannah and Alex. Everything seemed so perfect for Kirk. But, like most happy stories, it wasn't meant to last. The Rikti invasion touched the lives of everyone, but struck Kirk hard; his parents were both killed during an attack on King's Row. Kirk did whatever he could to help, voulinteering to help repair damaged military equipment and working with those hit hardest by the attack. Megan, who worked as a nurse during the war, was always proud of her husband's generous nature. After the war, Kirk moved their family to Perez Park, continuing his mechanic's work and also helping fix things around the apartment building they now lived in. Life was difficult, but he was happy. Even the encroaching gangs of Skulls and Hellions, with their incessant turf wars, didn't kill his sense of optimism. Not until Balefire arrived on the scene with his new, ultraviolent interperatation of the Hellion cannon did things fall apart completely. Kirk's life ended in late summer. Balefire, in a play to carve a section of the Park out for himself and his splinter group, hatched a plan to summon a powerful demon and bind it to his service. To make the summoning work, he needed a sacrifice to seal the pact. Megan and her two children had the misfortune of stumbling across the group as it set out to find its victims. Dragged to an abandoned strip mall, Megan, Alex, and Hannah were brutally murdered, their blood and flesh offered up to the powers of darkness. Perhaps fortunately, the text Balefire used to help guide the ritual was not an authentic manuscript, but a forgery. The summoning failed, and the Hellions left, taking the bodies and tossing them into the lake. Kirk was devastated; the police seemed unable to come up with any leads, and a search had not even turned up the bodies of his family so they could be properly buried. Once the police had told him they had no further leads, it was too much to bear. Kirk went home, took his gun out of the closet, cleaned it, then put it in his mouth and pulled the trigger. To his suprise (and, in later years, regret) the bullet simply mushroomed against the roof of his mouth. Several more shots yielded the same result. Other attempts met with failure as well; nothing seemed to be able to hurt him. Kirk's sorrow slowly began to shift into something else..... fury.
A Hero Rises
Kirk's first taste of what it meant to be a hero came when he encountered a small group of Hellions[1] terrorizing an old woman in his neighborhood. Figuring they could give him some answers he badly needed, he stepped in to help their victim. Bullets, chains, and knives were useless against him, and the scared gang members eagerly told him what little they knew of Balefire and his followers. However, Kirk's emergence onto Paragon City's crimefighting scene was tainted by his desire for revenge. Instead of turning the defeated punks over to the authorities, he killed them. Thus began a long and bloody period for the Hellions in Perez Park; Kirk (going by the name Resurgency) showed them no mercy wherever he found them. In time, the police could no longer ignore the rising body count that seemed to follow the tormented young man, and issued several warrants for his arrest. Between the support of a community that was finally emerging from the Hellion's grip of terror and Kirk's own growing powers, they were unable to make an arrest; the young hero always managed to slip away at the last moment, usually leaving behind battered and bloody Hellions. Over time, he managed to track down most of the members of Balefire's group and exact his revenge on them; Balefire himself would slip out of the city and into obscurity before Kirk could corner him, however. Kirk now found himself at a crossroads; he knew that conventional means were almost completely unable to harm him, but with the Hellions effectively destroyed in his neighborhood, he was unsure what to do next. Kirk began spiraling down into depression as he continually launched himself into battle with the strongest, most vicious opponents he could find, with no effect. It was at his lowest point, when he was seriously toying with the idea of smashing his way into an active volcano, that he first met members of the mutant group Evolution-X. In time, the brave men and women and their selfless service to the citizens of Paragon City would help heal Kirk's spirit, and renew his faith in the world.
The Lost Year
Almost as suddenly as he had appeared on the scene in Paragon City, Resurgency disappeared for over a year. Those who knew him speculated as to his fate; some believed he had taken the fight to the forces of evil in another dimention, or in some distant timestream, or perhaps even another planet. Time went on, and with still no word of his fate, the citizens of Paragon City moved on with their lives. Memory of the cocky, reckless young hero faded into the public consciousness; one newspaper even printed his obituary, saying he had fallen in battle against the Rikti near the Crash Site. And just as suddenly he returned, carrying no memory of the past year's events. Those closest to him knew something strange had befallen their friend, but there was little option open to discover exactly what had happened during that lost time. Later events would suggest Kirk had been trapped in the Shadow Shard, although this has never been confirmed, and Kirk still bears no memory of the time he was gone.
Resurgency Today
Kirk has done his best to stay out of the media limelight; he doesn't seek recognition for his actions, he's just trying to keep a sense of purpose. Sarcastic and arrogant, he sometimes rubs his teammates the wrong way, but doesn't pass over any opportunity to help others, considering no task "beneath him." In his mind, defeating giant monsters or thwarting doomsday plots are no more important that rescuing a little girl's kitten from a tree. An avid supporter of Vanguard[[2], he can often be found in the War Zone, doing his part to help keep the world safe for those too weak to fight for themselves. He still harbors a hatred of the Hellions, although he settles for delivering them to the police these days, badly beaten.... but alive. Kirk's story has recently taken a pair of bizarre and devistating twists. During his long absence from Paragon City, he unwittingly became host to a Nictus names Ebonstar. The parasite hid within its host, growing stronger by steadily drawing power from Kirk until it became strong enough to take direct control over him. Ebonstar's plan to detonate the Warburg rocket over a major part of the city and use the deaths of countless innocents for some dark plot was foiled by the Samoan Scrapper, although it was ultimately Kirk himself who saved the day, killing the Nictus by exposing it (and himself) to a gigantic radiation pulse from one of the rocket's warheads. The event also served to help draw Kirk closer to his friends within the group.
The second event was Kirk's exposure to a new biological weapon being developed by Malta as part of their Operation: World Wide Red. One of Malta's scientists developed a parallel project to the nanite ecosystem being deployed as the primary; a retrovirus targeted to the mutant genome, capable of erasing the source of a mutant's abilities. Kirk was exposed to a late stage of the virus when a Malta security agent blew up the sample in an effort to cover up the research. As a result, Kirk was nearly killed and lost all his powers. A long series of anti-viral treatments and gene therapy managed to stabilize his condition and remove the virus, but could not bring back his powers. Once the initial shock of being just a normal person wore off, he began searching for a way to keep active in the city's war on crime. With the help of contacts in the Bureau, as well as fellow Evo-X member Sirens Scream, Kirk was able to modify a Crey power suit to mimic at least some of his powers. However, recent events had taken more of a toll on him than Kirk would care to admit to all but his closest friends. With many of them now tied to other responsibilities, Kirk was beginning to feel more and more isolated. Friction was also building between Kirk and the new head of the Evolution-X Academy, James Winter. After a particularly heated argument one night, Kirk decided it would be best for all concerned if he parted ways with the Academy, striking out to make what peace he could with the world.
Recently, Kirk has discovered that his powers are slowly returning to him. This discovery came during an incident on the Yellow Line, where Kirk saved a young woman and her son from being shot by her estranged boyfriend. Kirk disarmed the gunman, but was shot twice in the process. However, the bullets failed to penetrate his skin, leaving behind only some nasty bruises. Currently, Kirk is wanted by the PPD as a "person of interest" in the investigation; Detective Fontaine, lead investigator on the case, is particularly anxious to find Kirk, for his own reasons. Kirk has also recently signed on with the mutant group Next Gen, although his motives for this are unclear to most who know him.
Preston Bannick and Forestall Industries
Preston Bannick was one of the founding minds of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA[3]), putting his talents to work for the United States during the Cold War. One of the early pioneers of modern power armor and its use, the products of his research can still be seen today, most notably in the Crey Industries Power Tank[4] armor series. After leaving government service, Bannick went to work at Forestall Industries, a key R&D partner of DARPA and the US military. Here he met Albion Forestall, who when he wasn't conducting board meetings and rubbing elbows with the heavy hitters of the defense industry, fought crime under the name Evangelion during the late 60's and 70's. Bannick and Forestall became fast friends; Bannick helped develop Forestall's most advanced suit of power armor, and supported his fight against the Vaztilok, especially a gruesome killer known as the King's Row Carver. Tragically, the Carver learned of the secret base located under the Forestall building in Overbrook, and ambushed his nemesis there, killing him and crippling Bannick in the process. The terrible events surrounding the death of Faultline effectively sealed Bannick off from the rest of the world, and he remained alone for many years, aimlessly continuing his work on Forestall's suit... until he was discovered by Kirk. Now, he's found a new sense of purpose, helping a new hero fight crime in the armor he has worked so hard on.
