Creator Notes

The character was originally conceived in the summer of 2007. I wanted to have a character who was trapped behind a cold shell. In the begining I had planned on a cyborg; a female cyberneticist employed by the government to maintain a new project which becomes stolen by a robotics obcessed villain. In the process she's mortally wounded but not killed and becomes the villain's guinea pig as he explores the stolen tech.

I found it difficult to roleplay her with the supergroup I was in at the time and scrapped her. Later I began her again as someone who wasn't literally trapped in metal so much as a woman trapped by her own vanity and fear, someone who was once beautiful and proud of it, then had that taken away and is so horrified that she takes to wearing a mask in public.

I think we're all influenced by things we see and don't even realize it consciously. If you were to ask me who's idea this was, I'd say it's mine. While that's true, now that she's done and actively played, I can see how it must seem to see the character and I can see how easy it would be to say "oh you ripped off so-and-so" but it's only now that she's done I can see who she's similar to. The character I intentionally borrowed from was Catwoman, the Tim Burton film version because she's a vigilante, vicious in her implementation of revenge and I love how she emerges from her pastel world as a black, dangerous thing. She's also very physical, an important trait of Rose, very up close.

She also resembles V, from the Alan Moore comic, V for Vendetta, though I swear it wasn't in my mind at her creation, but in so many ways, she is like him, from his origin, to the mask. There are many difference there though as well, but it's uncanny how close I came. Another weird coincidence was her similarity to Violet from Ultraviolet, especially the physical combat, very acrobatic and the fact that she's a lab-created vampire. The irony here is that I only saw the film AFTER I'd made Rose because I initially just thought it was some lame effects-driven future-fu film. When I saw that it was a vampire film (Wikipedia list of Vampire films) I read the synopsis and watched it. Disturbing.

Another influence was 30 Days of Night, a comic I picked up while working at Bosco's comic shop in Anchorage Alaska. I loved the art style and when I thought of Rose and her Crey crafter physiology I immidiately thought of the vampires from '30 Days', with their front teeth all being sharp. Seemed less "Dracula" and more lamprey, a creature made for ripping out throats to get at blood rather than someone who popped a tiny hole in a neck for a sip. When one of these things bit you, you knew it and there was no hiding what you were.

Rose was never intended to blend in. I didn't build Rose to be a classical vampire. She's not going to talk in a Romanian accent. She's not going to lure men to their doom in a satin sheeted bed. She's not going to be part of some 'society of the night'. She's a monster who hates being a monster and won't likely be seen as anything else, which is why it's safer to hide her face behind a mask.
