The Man
Mifune Sanjuro is a truly withdrawn and professional warrior. He speaks little to others, constantly hiding his thoughts and action from those around him. The guardianship of the swords has made him this way, having to close his mind and body off to the influence of the swords, lest he become possessed by them.
The Legend
Sanjuro is a name that is unknown in his home of Hiratsuka. The shadow in the night simply goes by the title of Dark Dragon. His victims left shattered, soulless and more frightening of all bloodless husks in the wake of his attacks. He was the dark protector of the village, no one knowing exactly who their unknown benefactor truly was, or that he came from a long destroyed clan.
History of the Mifune clan
The origins of the Mifune clan are lost to legend and conjecture. Though today a seemingly prominent family name, Sanjuro's particular clan didn't become known until the late 16th century. The little that is known is vague tale passed from old man to youth and onward. The modern day Mifune clan resides somewhere in the area in or surrounding Hiratsuka, presently located in the Kanagawa Prefecture. The legends of the origin of the clans vary and have been twisted or exaggerated throughout the centuries. The Fall of House Abukara
The Abukara clan were once a respected clan of monks and mystics. The family prospered and thrived based on one sole bit of information. The ancient clan were the guardians of a horrible secret. The family guarded a pair of swords, forged in darkness and Oni blood. Dark magics were cast on the blades to lock the power of the degenerate mountain demons in place making the swords indestructible, yet as evil and black as the Netherworld. The family was entrusted to guard the blades after the weaponsmith took up the swords and killed the small village where they were made.
For centuries the family guarded the blades from all who sought their power. Using holy magic and physical and spiritual perfection to keep the taint of the swords from consuming them, they kept the demon daisho, the katana Matsu and the wakizashi Setsu; Destruction and Murder, safe from the eyes of the outside world.
The Coming of Tokugawa
The rise of the Shogun Tokugawa saw the fall of House Abukara. Rising to power in 1603 he had an underlying hunt started for demonic blades. His inquisitor-like guard set their eyes on the Abukara clan, hearing of the secret that they kept safe. The Abukara clan refused to turn over the swords to his increasingly powerful shogunate. And so in 1605 the Abukara clan was wiped out, or so Tokugawa Ieyasu believed. The clan disappeared into the night with their unholy relics and were never seen again.
The Mysterious Clan Mifune
Three years after the annihilation of House Abukara a clan of shadowy warriors first appeared. Calling themselves Mifune, the remnants of House Abukara turned to murder and sabotage for profit. Their demeanor was different, their warriors carrying yet another unholy secret. The elders of House Abukara had turned to their demonic swords to ensure their own survival. Able to withstand the evil of the swords, the Daimyo of the clan was trained from birth to succeed the previous one and to weild the demon infused blades to ensure the survival of the family. With Tokugawa removed from his position of Shogun before their re-emergence, the Mifune clan erased all records of their past, ensuring that both House Abukara was truly dead and that the name Mifune would endure the centuries.
The Demonic Daisho
The swords themselves were forged by an unnamed weaponsmith. It is unknown whether this was because he was so shamed by his creations that he never signed his name to the blades, or whether he simply didn't have time to after the blades corrupted him completely. Whatever the case is, the true creator of these nightmare weapons has been lost to history. The blades were entrusted to the Abukara family because of their reputation as honorable and holy monks and mystics. No one could have fortold that the honor they were so revered for would be their undoing as well. The swords take an incredible toll on their wielders, forcing the person entrusted with their care to be the pinnacle of patience, honor, courage, and mental discipline. The swords will take over their host should they detect the smallest weakness or hesitation. One of the greatest deceptions that the swords hold is the empowerment of the wielder. Their evil auras empower the wielder in a number of manners:
The blades are blood-thirst. They absorb the souls of the defeated and must taste blood should they be drawn. This leaves the wielder in a touchy predicament for if the blades aren't bathed in blood when they're drawn they will feed from the life force of the wielder. The danger is that the effect is cumulative. The shreds of the wielder's life-force that the swords consume will not be restored. Should the blades consume all of the user's essence they will take control of the body, turning the wielder into a demonic force of nature.
As the blades consume more souls they will go through a transformation. The Chrysalis form lies between the Larval and the Released forms. The Chrysalis form is made of pure demonic energies barely contained from unleashing their power to the world. This intermediary form allows the user more abilities. Again this is simply a deception in order to convince the wielder to feed them more souls.
A Man of Discipline
Mifune Sanjuro was trained his entire life to accept the responsibility of guarding the blades. Having trained mentally, physically, and spiritually to maintain control and discipline at all times he is a deadly, cold, and silent killer if need be. Unfortunately for him and possibly the rest of the world, in the course of protecting those around him, the blades have been quietly gaining power, having recently taken their Chrysalis form. He is now faced with an incredibly difficult decision. Does he continue to fight for the weak and innocent using their demonic power, like many of his family before him have for centuries; often with varying degrees of success. Or does he put the swords down and hope that their evil hasn't tainted him forever. He cannot simply train his replacement for there are no more members of the Mifune line that are able to survive the training necessary.
As the generations have passed, the bloodline has become watered down and weak, most falling to the disciplines of technology and science, forsaking their ancient duty. Time will only tell what his final decision will be. Humanity may never know how fortunate they are.
