History
Project AS-X was a breakthrough in both tactics, and realizations of the criminal element. Studying generations of records and gathering input from often unwilling unbiased parties, a collection of villains and evil scientists were forced to come to a conclusion they'd long refused to believe. One of the Heroes' greatest, most effective tools against evil was not the powers they possessed, or the devices in their belts, but the diligent efforts of the overlooked aides who stood back to back with them. The sidekicks.
While countless villains had employed gangs, even armies of minions to aide with their twisted plots, none of these hired goons had the understanding of their superiors that the sidekicks had of their mentors. Instrumental in many downfalls and failed elimination attempts, these seemingly pesky rats often held the key to the success of many of the greatest heroes in history.
And so, deciding once and for all to even the playing field, if not tip it to their favor, the scientists toiled hard to create 13 Anti-Sidekick prototype weapons: 13 children. Scouring museums, evidence lockers, old battle sites, and former lairs, they gathered fragments of DNA samples of the greatest sidekicks in history. Combining them in different combinations, they managed to create thirteen human children. Born without superpowers of any kind (as sidekicks often are) the children seemed perfectly normal at first. Accelerated physical and mental growth, combined with special schooling, however, revealed what they had hoped for. It seemed heroes had a knack for choosing those with innate potential for the line of work, and the thirteen children showed a seemingly instinctive understanding of heroes and sidekicks, of their actions, trains of thought, and motivations. Many of them excelled at the rigorous physical training they were given between study sessions, and they all attentively listened to their creators lectures on the futility and misguided nature of the heroic morality.
All except one.
The only successful female child created, and their greatest hope, Number 13 found something amiss in her daily lectures. The lessons subconsciously taught by the sidekicks she studied, and the heroes whom they fought with, stuck heavily within her mind. She soon began to realize that villains lost not only because they were severely misguided, but prone to a sometimes fatal lack of judgment. In her short moments of solitude, she sat wondering what it would be like to battle alongside a true hero, to be not a weapon against sidekicks, but a sidekick herself.
She attempted to fake motivation, but eventually her creators noticed a lack of drive in her, and began to suspect that their hoped "Mother of Anti-Sidekicks" had developed a soft heart. Afraid it could possibly be a genetic trait she had acquired from the DNA segments they had used to create her, they chose to play it safe and eliminate the errant child.
As an example to the others, in a fate befitting of a sidekick, she was chained and lowered by wench into a pool of frenzied, starving sharks. However, as had countless numbers of their predecessors, her captors had forgotten to search her thoroughly. With the aide of a lock pick concealed within her right glove, she managed to free herself from her binding, and swing to safety, narrowly escaping the lab and the rain of bullets that sprayed in her wake.
Injured, lost, and half-frozen in the tattered remnants of her training garb, she stumbled through the strange city around her. Wandering into a dangerous area, and on the edge of consciousness, she was found in the Garmet Works District of King's Row by the heroine, Epoch Girl, who whisked the injured girl away for medical treatment. Epoch did her best to acclimate the girl to life outside the lab, the two forming a unique friendship. After her injuries healed she decided she wanted to pursue her dream immediately, and against her better judgment, Epoch agreed to help. Making her first costume with Epoch's assistance, and selecting a name, Scarlet Thrush, Paragon's first freelance sidekick was born!
