Silver Streak

Overview
Silver Streak was one of the first characters I made up when playing Champions table-top RPG, back in the early 80's. Remember that film about a runaway train? Me too - seemed a good name for a speedster when I was.... I'll just say, a teenager. Over the years, he has been resurrected for several different Champions campaigns, and has become one of my favorite RP characters - naturally, he became my main in CoH.
Affiliations
- Morty Hall (manager/agent)
- Supergroup: Liberty League
- Former Supergroup: Legion (defunct)

Powers
Silver Streak's superspeed imbues him with a range of powers, including:
- 1) Superhuman running speed: The limits of his ground running speed have yet to be clocked - although reports of him breaking mach5 are on record.
- 2) Super reflexes: He is a very difficult target, since his speed allows him to easily dodge most attacks.
- 3) Invisibility: He can accelarate to speeds faster than the human eye can perceive, allowing him to effectively become invisible, or seem to teleport.
- 4) Desolidification: He has the ability to control his molecular vibrations, in such a way as to almost entirely break down his molecular bonding. Doing so, he is able to render his body effectively immaterial, and thus immune to physical harm - also, in this state, he is able to pass through solid objects.
- 5) Electromagnetic and Sonar Blackout: Another way he can use his vibratory control is to vibrate at specific frequencies, blinding certain types of sensory devices. He discovered this ability by accident, while routinely entering a desolid state near a gadget-using friend who was using a radar device at the time. The device was blinded momentarily. Through trial and error, they discovered that SS is able to blind infrared, ultraviolet, radar, sonar, and similar sensory functions, in a rather large radius.
- 6) Superhuman endurance: On several occasions, he has been reported to have run across either of the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans, while showing nominal, if any, signs of fatigue.
Abilities
- 1) Acrobatics: SS felt that it was important he do all his own stunts in films, and so he trained diligently in acrobatics for his breakthrough role as Ozymandias in "The Watchmen."
- 2) High Society: After "The Watchmen," SS enjoyed a period as the new hot thing in Hollywood, and found that fame as both a superhero and moviestar meant he received invitations to all the right parties and social functions. SS quickly acclimated to this environment, and learned the social customs and politics of mingling with the fabulously wealthy, nobility, politicians, celebrities, and the like.
- 3) Persuasion/Oratory: SS's communication skills are well-honed, allowing him to tell believable lies, argue effectively, and hold the attention of and convince an audience.
- 4) Acting: ((If you're not sure how acting can benefit a hero, go see "Team America" :) )).
Equipment
- 1) Reflec Armor: SS's costume is a tuxedo with a silvery appearance, due to the reflective fibers interwoven in its textile, which provide some defense against energy and light based attacks.
- 2) Goggles: These are multi-function, and provide both defensive capability and sensory augmentation, including:
- 360 degree vision - in order for SS to utilize his superfast reflexes and molecular control to mitigate damage, he must be aware of attacks. These goggles were designed primarily to prevent the possibility of surprise attacks.
- Ultraviolet and Infrared spectrum vision - additional functionality was added soon after, as SS's missions occasionally required operations in nightime or complete darkness.
- Flash Defense - additional functionality was added to the lenses in order to protect SS's eyesight from light-based attacks.
Weaknesses and Limitations
- 1) Dependence to Caffiene: Immediately after acquiring his powers, SS needed to ingest caffiene on a regular basis in order to prevent his superspeed powers from fading. Over time, the physical need for caffiene diminished, and eventually ended entirely. He still has a strong psychological desire for caffiene, tho he doesn't literally suffer any addiction withdrawal or power-loss effects from lack of caffiene (prominent scientists have theorized that an extra-dimensional force - which they have dubbed the "Speed Force" - exists, and that SS's accident somehow interacted with this "Speed Force" in such a way that it has partially bonded with him, bestowing his paranormal abilities. According to this theory, the dependence on caffiene was only ever psychological - a defense mechanism of Silver Streak's mind, during a period of adjustment to his newfound abilities).
- 2) Accelerated Metabolism: Though his superspeed provides a variety of beneficial abilities, it also has drawbacks. SS's metabolism is so high that he burns calories at an incredible rate, and therefore eats over twenty meals a day. This doesn't take much time out of his day, however, since he mostly eats at superspeed as well.
- 3) Perception: Though his powers make him virtually immune to physical harm, he must be aware and able to react to threats in order to take advantage of his powers - they are not "always on." His goggles have been designed to mitigate this weakness, by enhancing his perceptive abilities.
- 4) Energy-based attacks: Though his powers make him virtually immune to physical harm, he has no extra-normal defense against attacks which are not physical in nature, other than dodging - flame, for example, still burns, regardless of how he might vibrate his molecules. The suit he wears was designed to mitigate this weakness, by incorporating several hi-tech solutions.
Additional Notes
Well Connected: SS has innumerable contacts and resources - moreso than the usual superhero contacts that provide information and clues to villainous activity. His retinue of contacts also includes: his manager Morty Hall, his attorney, his friend Gadget Girl (who makes all the gadgets described above). (In Champions, he had a half dozen more contacts which I can't now recall - people in high places who SS could call on for the occasional favor, because they liked having a superhero/moviestar friend who would make the occasional appearance at their parties or whatever).
