Biography

Parents

Emily Winters is the daughter of Philip and Jamie Winters. Her father's company, Winters Technologies Inc., is one of the leading defense contractors in the United States. Her mother was a physicist working for Winters Technologies before marrying her father and giving birth to her. From that point on she stayed home to raise Emily. Both of her parents were very loving and showered her with affection.

Childhood

From a very young age Emily displayed above average mental ability. She was reading novels while the rest of her pre-school classes played with blocks and by the time she reached the first grade her parents opted to remove her from school becaue she had already far surpassed anything she could learn in grade school. Her mother did her best to keep on teaching her on her own but eventually even Jamie Winters mastery of Physics wasn't enough to keep her daughter busy.

At the age of twelve Emily was enrolled in a private university specifically tailored to meet the needs of children with her extremely high IQ. It became readily apparent that Emily had inherited her mother's love of science. She took every opportunity to learn anything she could in almost every field of science. By the time she left the university, at the age of sixteen, she had earned PHD's in everything from Human Biology to Quantum Physics.

She was happy to be back with her parents and content to live at home with them until she was old enough to begin utilizing her knowledge to help people out in the real world. She even began development on an exo-skeleton that could supplement the human nervous system in such a way that it could, theoretically, give back the use of limbs to people who were physically handicapped. Her parents were very proud when she explained it to them, and her father even promised to make sure it would be marketed through Winters Technologies. Unfortunately he never got to see it completed...

The Winters Assassination

Throughout the fifteen year history of Winters Technologies Inc. the company made many technological breakthroughs that could have easily been used in weapons development. Philip Winters, however, refused to allow any of those technologies to be used or marketed. Winters Technologies continued to deal only in non-lethal defense technologies, but many people did not agree with Philip Winters decision. On top of the internal problems within Winters Technologies, they were also experiencing some hostilities from their rival Crey Industries in Paragon City. Some of their products had begun to supplant Crey's and they were naturally displeased by this.

Wishing to halt the hostilities between the two companies the Winters accepted an invite from Countess Crey in Paragon City. Emily, having just turned eighteen, went along with her parents. Their plane touched down in Rhode Island just as the sun was setting. As they were stepping off the plane in Emily suddenly realized she had left her laptop inside and ran in to get it telling her parents she would meet them in the car. Just as she reached her seat and found her laptop she heard two shots split the night air. Emily immediately dropped her laptop and ran for the door to the plane, but before she could get outside one of security guards stopped her and held her inside the plane. She collapsed in his arms tears streaming down her face. Just before he pulled her back she had seen her parents laid out on the ground no more than fifteen feet from the plane...

The Birth of Techno Raven

After the funeral no one heard from or saw Emily Winters for over a year. She handed her father's company over to the board of directors with the only stipulation that she be able to come and go from the facilities as she pleased. Most people assumed her to be in prolonged grieving, but they were wrong...

The exo-skeleton that Emily had been working on prior to her parents deaths now became her sole purpose. She began to incorporate many of the companies technologies into it as well. Pocket dimension portal generators, advanced sensor arrays, high speed computing equipment, and various non-lethal projectiles were all modified to attach directly to the exo-skeleton. Emily was able to make it all work perfectly with only one problem. The various non-lethal projectiles needed a delivery system different from that of common ballistic weaponry. After trying every option she could think of she was about ready to give up when the answer suddenly came to her. She could use a bow and arrows to fire the special payloads she was designing and there would be no chance of them being damaged when fired. Emily acquired all of the video she could on world champion archers. Using the computer system in the exo-skeleton she was able to copy all of their motions into its internal storage. She configured it to use the exo-skeleton's synapse relays to make it so that anyone who wore it would perform with the ability of a world champion archer. That combined with the helmet she was designing, which utilized advanced sensor and video relays, would make it almost impossible for her to miss.

With everything finally done she slipped into the exo-skeleton. It fit her like a second skin. She took a deep breath, and typed in the sequence to activate it. For a second there was intense pain as every one of her nerve endings fired at once to make contact with the exo-skeleton. Then it was gone replaced by a feeling that was almost electric. She could feel the crackle of energy as the exo-skeleton enhanced the strength of her own bio-electric field. Once activated it also gave her an intense jolt of energy which left her feeling more refreshed then she had ever been. Picking up the bow and arrow next to her she relaxed and let the suit move her body. It instantly assumed the stance she had viewed on the videos and let loose with the arrow. The shot was absolutely perfect. After a few more tests she finally de-activated the exo-skeleton, instantly feeling sore and exhausted when she did. She glanced over at the helmet, wings, and boots that she still had to test and smiled despite herself. With these she would definitely be able to track down her parents killer and then... well she wasn't sure she would do, but that wasn't going to stop her from finding him...

There were only two possible people responsible for her parents's murder. The Crey Corporation or the board of directors at Winters' Technologies. Unfortunately in order to determine which one it was Emily first had to find the assassin himself. It took very little effort to determine that he was likely somewhere in Paragon City. With her newly finished exo-skeleton hidden under her clothes she set out for Paragon City.

When she arrived she took up residence in one of her family's old luxury suites in Steel Canyon. She quickly converted one of the extra rooms into a lab that she could use to continue her development of the exo-skeleton, which she had finally dubbed "Raven", as well as sort through any evidence she found regarding her parent's killer. Emily also got used to wearing the exo-skeleton under her clothes, but she kept it de-activated to save her from the negative effects she felt when taking it off.

Walking home from one of the takeout Chinese places in Steel Canyon, Emily heard a muffled cry coming from one of the alleyways. Without even thinking she ran down the alley to see if anyone was in trouble. What she saw was two men holding down a young woman while another held a gun on her from a few feet away. Raven's eyes flashed in anger at the sight and immediately her hand fell to her wrist as she dialed in the key to activate the exo-skeleton. She'd long ago gotten accustomed to the pain from this, so she didn't cry out when the jolt hit her. With the suit activated she used the neural interface to call for the rest of the systems. A bright flash signaled the appearance of the rest of the additial systems for the exo-skeleton from the pocket dimension that Emily stored them in when not in use. The men saw the flash too and looked up to see Emily fully clad in the exo-skeleton complete with all of the systems she had added.

The HUD inside her helmet alerted Emily to the presence of the man's gun and immediatelely targeted him as the biggest threat. Reacting quickly she drew one of her arrows and quickly fired it into the group of men. It exploded in a blinding flash of light just before it hit the men. They all freaked out, tripping over each other as they ran away. The man who had been attacked walked over to Emily to thank her for her help and asked her what she called herself. Emily stuttered for a minute before coming up with something, and from that moment forward Emily Winters became Techno Raven...

Affiliations

A short while after the events which made Techno Raven decide to take up hero work she had the pleasure of working with both Liquidus and Timekick of the newly formed Freedom Force. Upon completion of their mission Raven asked if they might have space for her in their group. They graciously accepted and Techno Raven became one of the first members of the Freedom Force.

Following the dissolution of the Freedom Force, Raven joined forces with long time Freedom Force allies the Galacto-Rangers.

Personality

Emily Winters
Out of costume Emily Winters can be very shy, unless she's around alot of people she already knows. She makes an effort to play down her intelligence when she speaks with others so as not too appear different, but every once and awhile she will 'geek out' a little bit. Also, due to her mind running things over constantly, it's not uncommon for her to 'space out'. This normally only happens when her mind gets on a particularly strong sequence of thoughts, and will sometimes result in her retiring to the lab in her apartment to test her thoughts.

In costume Emily is much more confident. In combat her entire focus is on the moment. She will analyze all possible results of an action before ever lifting a finger and is very good at exploiting weaknesses in her enemies even when they appear to have none. This particular skill makes her an exceptional leader provided she has a team willing to listen to her instruction.

The only other aspect of her personality comes about when the matter of her parents comes up. She is extremely defensive regarding details of her parents lives and has been known to lose her cool with people that debase them in any way.

Equipment

SM190 "Raven" Exo-Skeleton

The SM190 "Raven" Exo-Skeleton
The SM190 ties itself to the nervous system of the wearer. This allows it to augment both the physical ability of it's wearer as well as the strength of their natural bio-electric field. The exo-skeleton can also be configured to store pre-recorded actions that it can than replay through whoever is wearing it provided that the wearer possesses the physical ability to pull them off.

Emily designed the exo-skeleton to interface with any other systems that she might create in the future. The exo-skeleton's synapse relays can be connected to other systems in order to effectively give the wearer increased senses. All of these added systems are controlled via direct neural stimulation of the wearer. Unfortunately each of these individual systems are also powered by the wearers own bio-electric field, which means that the more that is added the more strain it puts on the user.

The exo-skeleton does have some problems, despite Emily's protests to the contrary. It saps the strength of the person who uses it because it draws on their own bio-electric field to power itself. This effect is not felt until the user takes off the exo-skeleton because it is constantly bolstering the wearers bio-electric field up. In addition, prolonged use of the exo-skeleton can create a dependency on it. Emily's desire to continue her hero work as well as avenge her parents has blinded her to these facts. She will swear that her design of the exo-skeleton is flawless regardless of what anyone else says. The long term affects of this on Emily's physical and mental acuity has yet to be determined, but it is highly possible that her prolonged use of the exo-skeleton could, eventually, prove to be fatal.

Additional Systems

Pocket Dimension Portal Generator - Due to the increased size of the exo-skeleton with all of the additional systems attached, Emily incorporated a small portal generator into the exoskeleton. All of the additional systems of the exo-skeleton are stored there until called for by Emily at which point they are pulled from the pocket dimension and automatically attached to the exo-skeleton. Just like all of the exo-skeleton's systems this feature is controlled neurally by Emily.

Helmet Systems - Emily designed the helmet of her suit to be able to break down almost anything she encountered. It contains a micro-supercomputer, of Emily's own design, that maintains a static connection to criminal databases across the world. This puts nearly endless information at Emily's fingertips should she come up against a situation she can't handle. It is also able to wirelessly interface with almost any existing computer system, giving Emily access, and control over, anything connected to it. As an added bonus the visor is configured with a heads up display that monitors vital signs of whatever she is currently targeting, as well as displaying all known strengths and weaknesses. The status of all other systems belonging to the exo-skeleton are also displayed here for Emily.

Thruster Boots and Wings - These two systems were added to afford Emily the ability to fly. The boots provide forward and lateral thrust and the wings help to maintain altitude and flight control. Due to the wings direct interface with Emily's nervous system they have the unfortunate side-effect of causing her to feel them even when they are not actually there. She sometimes finds herself trying to flap her 'wings' even when she doesn't have them active because of this effect.

Pocket Dimension Gauntlets - In order to store her bow as well as the various arrows that Emily uses she designed another small pocket dimension portal generator into each of her suits gauntlets. Her left gauntlet is used to reach into the pocket dimension that stores her bow while her right arm actually has been designed with access to over a dozen different pocket dimensions that Emily uses to store her various types of arrows. Emily only has to think of which arrow she wants at a given moment and the gauntlet automatically opens the correct portal.

Stinger Arrows - Aside from the various payloads that she has to debilitate large numbers of enemies at once, Emily also developed a non-lethal arrow to be used as a standard projectile as well. They are designed with the exo-skeleton's technology just in reverse. Rather than simply piercing their targets they deliver a charge that is both equal and opposite to their targets bio-electric field. They won't fell stronger foes in a single shot but any foe affected by these in multiples will eventually fall due to them slowly wearing away at their nervous system.

Physical Force Shield - The final system added to the exo-skeleton is a low power force field which is tuned to screen out incoming physical damage from things such as bullets, knives, clubs, or even fists. Emily elected to tune it this way due to these being the most common weapons used among the criminals of Paragon City.
