Humble Beginnings
Leopold Presteign was born to German Immigrant parents in a run down section of Buffalo, New York. His parents owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store. Through hard work and good customer service, the Presteigns were on their way to the middle class. The success of the busines attracted the local mob, who attempted to extort money from the immigrants. Leopold's father was a hard man, a grizzled war veteran, who was unafraid of the local thugs. He fought them off time and time again. After numerous warnings, the local mob boss decided to teach the angry German a lesson. He did so by burning the store, attached to the family home, down. Both of Leopold's parents were killed in the fire. Leopold survived. He spent the rest of his childhood in a series of foster homes.
College Years
Leopold was an excellent student, despite his unstable surroundings. He received a full scholarship to MIT, focusing his study on molecular engineering. He soon became a leading authority in this field, grasping the material better than some professors.
Launching a Corporation
Leopold went on to launch a very successful firm, specializing in enhancing current products on the molecular level. Other companies paid his firm large sums of money to improve their product, in attempt to gain a competitive edge. Over time, Leopold, investing wisely, became a billionaire.
The Rikti War
After gaining wealth, Leopold began to want to pay back society. He felt he was fortunate to be successful, but others in his situation would not be so lucky. He thought he needed to do something to fight the growing crime. He was planning on funding an anti-poverty project until the Rikti launched their first attack. He then decided to take matters into his own hands.
Becoming a Hero
Leopold had made a few illicit contacts in his conquering of the business world. Through these contacts, he was able to purchase an exo-suit from the criminal organization known as the Gold Brickers. Using his own molecular technology, he improved and customized the suit, making it his own. He took the name the Tek-Nomad. As he was planning on roaming the country, fighting the Rikti where he encountered them.
Founding the Guard
When the Tek-Nomad heard the plan the Vanguard to fight the Rikti off planet, he was concerned that the Earth would be left somewhat unprotected. He decided to recruit some heroes to form a sort of super hero national, or in this case, planetary, guard. The name of the organization, The Global Guard
After the War
After the Rikti were initially repelled, the Global Guard stuck together, fighting criminal organizations. Though the Guard has lost many members during the Rikti War, they still had a tight knit core, that were a formidable force. The Global Guard apprehended numerous costumed criminals, including a young Hymnal, sending him to the Zig.
The End of the First Guard
The events surround the death of the remaining Guard is still not fully known. What is known is that the Guard was ambushed at their base of operations in late 2007. There were no survivors, though at least one member is still unaccounted for. There is a memorial to the Tek-Nomad and the rest of the original Global Guard at the site of the battle.
