Message Retransmit – From Waylon Andrews To Lady Emelia Rothchilds, Personal Assistant, Countess Crey ((M’Lady, I’m sending you a copy of this internal memo I was sent by Myron over at Portal Corp. I thought you would find this rather interesting. I’ve included some personal comments in as well, so please forgive me if I stray occasionally….Waylon))
Greetings everyone. I’m happy to report that we’ve had another success here and this is my customary initial briefing report. Naturally each one of your divisions will be getting a more detailed file, but this should do for the preliminaries.
I’ll break down into the standard format for our briefings here in a second, but first, I do have a few personal comments that I’d like to get out of the way. I am becoming increasingly unhappy with the way that Waylon’s department is beginnig to run roughshod over the others in the project. This is SUPPOSED to be a cooperative project, to identify, extract and "convince" metas from other dimensions to work for us, but lately all I’m seeing is his department collect more and more of our subjects. I would like us to be able to get back to the founding ideals of this project.
(W.A : My god…this man is such a tool. You’d think that with all of the letters after his name he would have the smarts to figure this out. But then again..when he does, it might be time to…retire him…))
Section I Project History, Subject History, and Dimensional Analysis of Subject’s Home Plane.
A) Project Gathering Storm was initiated in a joint venture between divisions within Portal Corporation and select divisions of Crey Industries. It’s purpose was to use Portal Corporation resources to seek out and bring to our dimension, superpowered beings who would be willing to work for and use their talents for the benefit of Portal Corp and Crey Industries. Being that these individuals had no connection to this plane, their existence could be kept secret and as they have never been registered, we can use them with impunity. In addition we have managed to, at the time of this memo, place no less than 25 heroes into various supergroups in an “intelligence gathering mode” Some of these operatives are aware of their “participation” in this endeavour.. some are not.
B) During tuning of portal 59 to dimensional instance #35682B, a significant anomaly was encountered. The nature of this anomaly has yet to be determined, but initial indications were of an extreme power surge of not less than a 8.9 on the Phillips Index. During our attempts to shut down the gate before a dimensional breach occurred, an energy backlash erupted through the gate and into the portal prestaging area. Unfortunatly I have to also report that this energy backlash caused the deaths of three low level technicians, (please see attached personel requisition form #236A for further details). After the energy prominence subsided and the portal was shut down. Rescue crews were shocked to discover that in addition to the bodies of the three technicians at the site, a 4th unknown body was present. They were even more shocked do to discover this body was in fact still alive, though severely injured and burned quite horribly. In accordance with Portal Corp Protocols, the subject was placed in to an insolation tube and taken to the analysis chambers for further examination.
C) We were able to get only minor data concerning the dimensional instance that the portal opened to, and further attempts to open the portal to that dimension have been as of this time fruitless. From what we can gather the world the subject is quite similar to our own, however is highly unstable, geologically. The reason for this is unknown at this time, but as we cannot investigate this world further (we are unable to open another portal to that particular dimensional instance, and as the subject seems to have no memory of it's place of origin, we can only make speculations.(please see further down in my report for more about the subjects mental state)
(W.A. And this is perhaps the true tragedy...if we could have been gotten access to more meta's from that world, we would be sitting pretty right now. I do have to wonder if the good doctor is telling us all he knows about this world. I've recieved some conflicting reports from my people in his research group. I'll be looking into this and get back to you when I have more information)
Section II Subject Physical Condition and Assessment
A) When subject #645 came through the portal, our initial assessment of it's condition was grave. The subject posseessed third degree burns over 80% of it's body, and the remainder of the surface area was either fully necrotized or was homehow transmuted to a stone-like substance. X-rays and CAT Scans indicated that much of the skeletal structure was damaged,and damage to the internal organs was severe as well. Our medical personel could not come up with a compelling reason as to why Subject #645 was still alive, and had not succumbed to it's wounds. It wasn't until we called in (*name deleted for security purposes*) from his active position in one of Paragon's more famous Supergroups. He was able to determine that a powerful magical field was surrounding the subject, keeping it from succumbing to it's wounds. In addition, (*name deleted for security purposes*) was able to determine that some of the damage done to the subject had been the result of a powerful magical attack, though he was unable to determine the exact type, as the "tenor of the magic" as he called it, was of a type unknown to him. Further research on our part, using Quantum Signature analysizers, indicated that the remainder of the injuries had a Quantum Profile consistant with that of Class IV through Class IX metahuman abilities. It is therefore our conclusion that Suject #645 was involved in some form of battle against multiple meta powered and magically capable foes at the time of it's extraction. Within several hours of the extraction, the subject began to emit waves of green energy that seemed to have the effect of causing tissue and skeletal regeneration. A quick analysis of this energy revealed it to be of a similar type as known instances of self directed, limited propogation, self healing abilities, commonly seen amongst meta's here. As this power began to manifest, and cellular and structural regeneration was underway, (*name deleted for security purposes*) indicated that the magical field around the subject was beginning to degrade. After 12 applications of the healing energy from the subject (which were separated by irregular intervals, ranging from 5 minutes, to 1 hour) the majority of the damage appeared to be healed. At no time did it regain consciousness during the process.
B) The subject is a female Caucasion, of slight build, and possessing all of the physical attributes commonly found in humans of our dimensions. We were however unable to place a definite determiniation of the age of the subject. Several of the tests we ran seemed to indicate it was in area of 16 years of age, and some others, (quantum signature testing methods) placed the subject's age closer to 29. We are still trying to find a cause for these discrepancies and are quite puzzled by them. We have never had an instance where the two testing methods have encountered such a variation. Diagnostics and base line level testing of the apparatus indicated that the testing materials were all working within nominal operating specifications.
((W.A This would actually fit in with what happened to subject #25, who was send to the Rogue Isles and ended working in the temporal instance known as Recluse's Victory. During one of of the transports to that instance, the subject was de-aged, by a factor of about 20 years. Testing indicated a similar variations in the age between the different testing methods. It's now unfortunate that we no longer have access to #25, but it was deemed at the time that a 5 year old with extensive gravity control abilities was a hazzard and the subject was send to the Bio-divisions to be rendered down her DNA..shame too...she was a pretty one...))
C) In our further testing we discovered that the subject was in possession of 1.45% more genetic material in it's DNA code than in baseline humans. The purpose of this additional genetic material is unknown but it is possible that this code is part of some "meta gene" that gives the subject it's abilities. Enough genetic material was extracted to be able run tests to confirm this hypothesis. This variance does indicate that the subject is genetically incompatable with humans from our dimenstion, thus discounting the use of the subject in our secondary breeding programs.
((W.A. What a shame..too. She could have made some interesting additions to our Paragon Protectors program, if we could have matched her with some our other people in that program.))
D) After several days of unconsciousness, the subject began to come around and became aware of it's surroundings. The subject was cognicent of it's surrounding, questioning of its location and status, and possed the ability to communicate in English, though it does happen to possess a very slight accent that our people are still trying to pin down. It should be noted at this time that the subject has no recollection of the events leading up to it's transfer and no indications as to it's identity. It was at this time we brought in (*name deleted for security purposes*) to run a series of mental assessments of the subject. (*name deleted for security purposes*) was able to to perform several mental scans of the subject, and reported that many areas of the subject's mental landscape and memory sub structures had been modified. (*name deleted for security purposes*) was also able to indicate that the same magical effect that kept the subject from perishing upon it's arrival here seemed to be responsible for the significant gaps in it's memory. (*name deleted for security purposes*) also cryptically indiated the detection of a "darkness" with the subject, though (*name deleted for security purposes*) was unable to provide any more information concerning that.
Section III Abilitiy Assessment
A) During the course of the subject's detention at our facility we were able to determine the scope and range of the subject's abilities. It would seem that the subject is in possession of limited geomorphic abilities. These abilities manifested first when the subject was having some bloodwork done,an accident resulted in a broken needle in it's arm. The subject cried out in pain, and made several protrusions of solid rock form a barrier betweeen itself and the technician. These rock protrusions were formed appearantly through telekenitic control and manipulation of the surrounding rock strata, underneath the facility. Further testing has indicated that this limited barrier projection is the extent of the subject's powers, but we are fully expecting more variations and abilities to manifest themselves in the near future. It was this display of power that enabled us to place the label of Terratonic upon the subject, a combination/contraction of the two words, Terra (meaning the Earth) and tectonic (a greek work meaning "to build"). In addition it would seem that the subject has conscious control of the healing powers at it's command, this was indicated when the subject attempted to break out of it's room, and was subsequently shot by a security guard. The wound was not life threatening, but the subject was able to use it's abilities, to close the wound. It should be noted the the subject was caught in short order and the guard in question was reprimanded for resorting to lethal methods before non-lethal methods were employed.
((W.A ACTUALLY.....the guard in question was found out to be an Arachnos agent... he's been send back to Lord Recluse...though I hear a couple of the packages we sent him back in got delayed a day or two. We were able to get some good information from him before his mind broke and be became incoherent. I once again would recommend to the Countess that some form of strategic alliance between Crey and Arachnos...it might be beneficial for each of our needs)
Section IV Recommendations for Subject Status.
As per the directives of operation Gathering Storm, subjects collected by us are subject to the following options, depending on their condition, abilities and willingness to cooperate.
1) Full integration into the Paragon Protector program.
2) Placement into a Paragon City supergroup, for the purposes of monitoring and intelligence gathering.
a) With full knowledge
b) After extensive behavior modification and subliminal process implementing
3) Vivesection and rending down of the consitient DNA for research purposes.
4) Simple execution and disposal of the body in the station furnaces.
Since the subject is possesed of abilities that may be of use to the project, I whole heartedly reject option 4, and option 3 would be ill-considered as well. Though the mental state of the subject is sometimes unstable, I feel that it can be used for our needs. Given the subject's predaliction for attempting to gain it's freedom and escaping our facility (three attempts have been made as of the writing of this memo). I feel that option 1 is untenable at this time. Therefore, I believe that option 2, and in specific option 2b is the best choice for this subject and for our purposes.
(W.A...actually there's another option that I think we need to look at.. A transfer of the subject to Operation Spider's web. We have precious few agents at work in the Rogue isles and this subject's proclivity for angry outbursts would make it fit in well there)
(( Further Addendum by W.A - M'Lady Rothchilds, i'm extremely saddened to report the the subject has made a successful escape. Appearantly after the directorate decided for option 3, our dear Dr Jeffries had a slight stab of conscience and made possible the escape of the subject. It was able to make it's way to an outer area of the perimiter and from there, used it's abilities to form a tunnel underneath the containment fence and make good an esacpe. To it's credit, it did manage to stop a squad of troopers that were following it, by collapsing the tunnel it used to escape. It's my understanding that the subject has managed to make to Paragon City and is now currently registered by the Freedom Corps. I deeply apologize to both you and the Countess for this breach, and can assure you that this has been dealt with accordingly. Though a brilliant man, Dr Jeffries has been unstable of late, and his head research assistant was more than happy to fill in his shoes upon hearing of the Dr's "suicide". She is currently living on the streets, but has made several allies in her short time in Paragon City, making an extraction attempt a risky undertaking.))
(((Tertiary addendum, by Lady Rothchilds to Countess Crey. Countess, I have sent you the materials you have asked for in regards to the Terratonic incident. It is perhaps fortunate that she was able to escape, for had she not, and increased scrutiny not placed into Mr Andrews activities, we would not have been able to reveal him to be an Arachnos Agent himself. It would seem that for some time, he has been procuring personel and materials gathered through project Gathering Storm and and giving them to Lord Recluse, using the duplicity we were aware of within project Gathering Storm so hide his deeper duplicity. I am highly disappointed that our internal affairs division had not been able to discover his treachery and that so many of the individuals collected are now in in the pay of Lord Recluse. As per your directives I have ordered the shut down of project Gathering Storm and the liquidation of the personel involved. The subjects who were knowingly working for us in Paragon City will be disposed of as well. The undercover agents and those who have been subjected to psychological conditioning will have their oversight transfered to other projects. Their usefullness is still recognized and they possess little knowledge that can come back to haunt us. As for Terratonic herself..she has now managed to join the supergroup Young Gods of the Golden Age. It's my belief that we should let her stay there for the time being. We can direct (*name deleted for security purposes*) to keep an eye on her wihle they are both part of that group. )))
Affiliations
Terratonic is leader of the Young gods of the Golden Age, and also maintains close ties to the Golden Age Heroes numerous coalition teams. She is especially close to her teammates Hyperion Shield and Colossal Girl, who she regards as her surrogate siblings.
Personality
Powers
Terratonic is able to tap into the ley line energy circling the earth and use that energy to reshape stone and rock. This reshaping can take the form of a simple barrier between herself and an opponent, or completely encase a foe in rock. Lately she has learned how to tap into volcanic processes and can make minor earth tremors to keep her foes off of their feet, or tap into subterranian pockets of sulpheric gasses to choke and render foes helpless. As a side effect of the tapping of ley line energy, she is able to convert the earth energy into healing enegries. With this she can heal herself and her allies, and even bring them back from the brink of death. Additionally, she can again manipulate ley line energy to propel herself through the air.
Abilities
Terratonic somehow is very conversant in other languages, and has been known to talk to teammates in languages other than English. As with most things she has no idea how she knows these other languages.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Terratonic's only recorded weakness to date is an exceptional anger control problem. When she first joined the Young Gods, she was able to control her impulses, but soon outbursts became more and more common. In one instance almost resulting in the death of a Hellion who had attacked her. She was able to gain a significant control of these outbursts with the telepathic aid of Quick Shot Kid.
Equipment
None. Terratonics original costume was fished out of a garbage dumpster during her flight from Portal Corp security forces. Eventually she managed to purchase another one with monies saved from doing a series of odd jobs from Serge at Icon.
