The Last Hunter

Who Is The Last Hunter?

Following the break up of The Grey Watch, Jake Love finds himself once again alone, without a clan, without a calling and ultimately without a purpose. He is a living relic, the last member of a species and a world that is lost and one of the last of an older generation of heroes. After a period of contemplative meditation and realisation from the final words of the Oldtimer he realises he still has some purpose and sets off into the world in order to fulfil it and keep the traditions of the Memory-Keeper alive. To do so he must travel from place to place, learning the memories of the world and the people within. To do so he must travel to where he is needed most, never asking for thanks or recognition, bringing justice to where it is needed most and hope to where it is lost.

His task is a tragic one, for he himself has all but lost hope. But ultimately the purpose of a journey is never the destination but more the journey itself and what one learns upon it.

The Saga So Far...

Book 1: You Can Never Go Home Again

The events of the first book of The Last Hunter occur while he is still associated with the Grey Watch. Approached by the Vanguard he is informed that his long forgotten home dimension, Primordial Earth has been found once more and is currently under Rikti occupation. An expedition is required to assess the scale of the threat and gather what information they can regarding the Rikti force compositions and the risk they pose to Primal Earth.

Realising that this could be his only chance to see his home again he accepts, under the conditions that only he goes on this expedition for it is his world and only he could truly survive what would be on the otherside. Begrudgingly the Vanguard accept the terms and send him through the portal to a world vastly different from the one he was stolen from some six years before. Upon arriving he is attacked by the Rikti, drawn to the portal activity and meets up with Yuriko and Jun, one an old friend from his past and the other seemingly his rival for her attentions in the six years since passed.

Despite his return he is treated as an outcast by the survivors of his world, shunned by the only other member of his species, The Oldtimer and disregarded by the other elders and leaders of the survivors of the Rikti invasion. In response he goes off on his own with a group of the younger ones, including Yuriko to do what the elders seem reluctant and hesitant to do themselves - recon against the enemy. Travelling North they find one of the fallen Rikti vessels and soon learn of the truth of their world. Their camp of survivors are the last survivors of the entire world. Unfortunately for them they are discovered and the recon force sacrifices themself one by one so that Jake and Yuriko can escape.

However, as this was taking place the Rikti assaulted the survivor's encampment with overwhelming force, killing all bar The Oldtimer, who has slipped away to ensure that the younger ones learned the fate of their people. At this time Jake learns the truth of his birth, what the portents of the Memory-Keepers foresaw and what had happened in his absence. Knowing now the true fate of his world and indeed some of his own forgotten history Jake, along with Yuriko and The Oldtimer swear vengeance, determined to make one last strike on the Rikti for their world.

The following day the trio attack the ship, planting explosives as each vents their own sorrows and grief in their own ways. Yet, as he presses in deeper and deeper Jake learns the full truth of the Rikti presence and what they had been developing. Coming under attack by the Rikti Science Chief his blades are shattered and once the Oldtimer and Yuriko arrive more of the truth emerges. The Oldtimer had been the first 'victim' of the Rikti and seeing his old tormenter slipped into a state known as the Gloried Dead, where the only option was death. Passing the memory spear to Jake the Oldtimer engaged the Rikti, buying time for the others to escape and to complete the mission.

Setting off the bombs Jake and Yuriko destroyed the Rikti ship, yet the shockwave knocked both unconscious. When he woke he discovered Yuriko dead and realising he was the last of his world set off toward the portal before collapsing in shock and despair. An unknown amount of time later Vanguard sent a second expedition through and found him, bringing his broken form back to Primal Earth before finally sealing off Primordial Earth.

Book 2 : Legacy

Book 2 begins two months after the events of Book 1, following the break up of The Grey Watch. Once more alone, once more a warrior without a clan Jake heads deep into Woodvale for a period of contemplative meditation, where he considers the natures of fear, monsters, change and finally the nature of visions. Upon coming to a sort of enlightenment he chooses to leave Woodvale, heading out into Paragon City, following the call of the city itself to go where he is needed the most.

Elsewhere, in the ashes of Praetoria Flea Mark Zero begins to put into a motion an as of yet unrevealed plan, one which seems to involve the manipulation of Despair Unbound and possibly deliberate provocation to get the juggernaut of destruction to attack Paragon City directly.

Answering a call from an unknown source Jake arrives in Kings Row, only to watch and study the gathering crowds of human and metahuman from all walks of life that seem to have been drawn to this call. As he does so a plot unfolds in which different warring factions of Arachnos, including Flea Mark Zero begin to play against eachother and other rival factions such as The Lost and The Skulls in order to obtain the physical source of this call. In response the Call itself seems to seek aid from other heroes, though at the same time this runs the risk of bringing in other villains who will attempt to exploit it...

How It Works

The Concept

In comics there are a number of different archetypes and concepts, from the alien outsider to the noble leader to the diabolical mastermind. The focus of The Last Hunter as a 'group' is one such archetype - the wandering Samurai. The idea of a hero who asks for no recognition, no glory and no reward and simply travels along the road from village to village helping others where needed and bringing justice where no others will.

There are a number of examples of this type of character in existence today and it is an archetype that exists in other media as well, most notably in the Samurai Film genre produced in the last century and their 'descendants', Westerns. It is also a common feature of fantasy literature and oddly enough Eastern mythology. Quite often they revolve around a lone hero or wanderer and in time a group of companions builds up around the warrior, lending him their aid when needed, emphasising bonds of friendship in situations where no one really belongs to one particular group or the other.

Notable examples of this archetype in CoH's set genre (comics) are Usagi Yojimbo and Jonah Hex. There are also often times when the 'big name' heroes end up alone, travelling on a journey of self discovery and realisation in much the same manner. On such journeys others are encountered, often from distant lands or exotic cultures and often the hero returns having learned some new technique or skill that was needed to defeat the foe they faced.

The SG side of this is dead and disbanded. Never going to be able to get the prestige together to build the base to what I want. Think of this as more...character support.

Inspirations

There are a number of inspirations and concepts behind this faux-SG from various sources of literature and media and also from aspects of IC character background.

  • The Fleas - One of the strongest sources of influence for this idea is the nature of Flea's species. They were a culture of nomadic warrior clans, often uprooted by other forces and nations and often on the move in order to survive with the changing seasons. As the last of his kind he is simply carrying on their traditions and ways so that they will not be forgotten. He is living off the land itself, letting himself become more connected to it and seeking to exist with it, rather than against it. In addition he is also continuing their codes of belief and behaviour though this is more in an attempt to restore his own lost honour.
  • The Samurai - The history of the Samurai and their ultimate fate as relics from a time of honour and tradition lost to the advance of technology and western influence is a strong source of inspiration. The code of Bushido is also a strong source of inspiration and several of the principles seem the sort of thing that Flea would live by and come across as being very similar to the sorts of beliefs held by the warriors of Flea's people. In addition there are the Samurai films, which often focus on the concept itself which inspired this very group.
  • Modern Animation - A lot of cartoons from the early 2000s had the right sort of theme going for them, were beautifully executed and animated and had significantly more impact that their predecessors. The two that are most relevant to this group are Samurai Jack, which in itself could be considered a modern interpretation of the Samurai film genre and Avatar, with its distinct focus on spiritual natures and the nature of one's own identity and destiny. Considering a lot of the IC reasons for this wandering hero approach these two particular series are suitable inspirations for the goal.

Contacting The Last Hunter

The Last Hunter SG can be contacted in a number of different ways for organising RP and interaction and indeed it is encouraged for you to do so as this can't happen without your help.

  • You can leave a message on Virtueverse either on the Discussion page for this SG or on the discussion page for User:TheFlea.
  • You can contact me in-game on the global @The Flea.
  • When not at work I am contactable on AIM on darkstarsabre.
  • I can also be contacted on the official CoH forums under Flea_Mark_Evil.
  • You can also contact me on any other forums etc. that I may be registered with for various SGs. You'll know if I'm there already.
  • Apologies for there not being any sort of official forum or the like for folk to contact me on but as the plan is not one of expansion and more a solo, proof of concept type SG it seems a bit redundant making a whole site and forum for just me. I'm not sure multiple personalities is something to be encouraged.
