Early Life
Growing up in the South End of Boston, MA, Colter Grady led a normal life with a middle class family. During his teenage years he entered a disastrous rebellious streak. By the time he was 18, his arms were covered in tattoos, he drank often and smoked a pack a day, and started fights where ever he could. His life almost came to a crashing halt when he picked a fight, not knowing that his target was also the member of a local gang. Beaten and left for dead, Colter found that he had walked a dark path he was not meant to be on. After a year of recovery and physical therapy, Colter immediately enrolled at the University in Steel Canyon where he found that he had a hungry sense of curiosity.
The "Blessing"
While investigating the capture of colleagues on a research team in Afghanistan, Associate Professor Colter Grady came under attack from a local terrorist tribe while staying in a small village. Fleeing for his life he became trapped in a cave while hiding for cover from rocket blast. Certain he would die, he soon found he wasn't the only one in the cave, as it was the habitat of an old hermit named Cyril. For reasons known only to Cyril, he found a certain quality in Colter that felt familiar to him, at which point he provided Colter with what he could only describe as a "blessing". Explaining that Colter must learn the origin of this blessing on his own, he helped the young Professor escape from the cave and point him in the direction of his friends.
Colter soon was able to rescue three of the four team members and return them back to the states. During the rescue, one of the captured described Colter's bright green glow to be the "True Beacon" of hope and thus the name stuck. The three survivors were the only to know True Beacon's identity until he joined Novus ordo arcanium.
New life
Upon returning to Paragon, True Beacon immediately set to work to discover the origins of his mysterious blessing. He also began working with the research team survivors crafting what would be the True Beacon uniform, allowing him to survive the harsh environments he would need to endure so he could grow and fully harness his newfound abilities. He still continued to teach during the day, looking to advance his career as a means of gaining better access to materials to better understand his origins.
Now
True Beacon's exploits caught the eye of Pale Inventor, who took him under his wing and brought him to NOA. It is here that TB was able to find a home amongst more experienced mages, whose adventures have been bringing him ever closer to his own truth. True's unique ability to manipulate energy for healing purposes has earned him a position as a valued field medic, forcing TB to also pick up medical studies as a hobby. In most instances, True is usually found in the NOA library, constantly cramming books and adding to his already massive pile of notes.
Character traits
Personality Traits
TB is kind in nature, often worries about other members of the group. He believes himself to be the most rational person in the group, often looking at group missions as ridiculous exploits, but feels a need to go to protect his friends, plus he usually finds that each mission gives him a chance to satisfy his appetite for knowledge. He is infinitely curious, and often asks lots of questions and is always taking notes, never turning down an opportunity to learn more.
Equipment
True's best inventions were his first and are the trademarks of his uniform. He wears a single eyepiece that acts as a HUD, allowing him to find injured colleagues or detect enemies before they approach. Learning a harsh lesson from being gassed during his rescue attempt on the University Research Team, he also has built a prototype gas mask that fits snugly around his nose and mouth, allowing him to breath much easier, while also helping to hide his identity. His suit is made from stripped layers of Kevlar and is surprisingly mobile. Though it used to be white, with green mage symbols painted on it, it has become so battle worn that it appears a much dirtier grey now. He also keeps utility belts strapped to him that carry not only note pads, but also new invented equipment that he's testing (most of which don't work so well, TB hasn't always been the handiest member of NOA).
Abilities
His paradigm has him see the world as a series of consequences linked by energy. His abilities circle around his unique trait to manipulate energy fields, mostly for the purpose of healing, though they have strong offensive properties too, allowing him to conjure energy surges that deliver powerful blows to opponents. As he has improved his focus, he has been able deliver enough energy to himself for levitation and flight, and even become invisible but only for very short periods of time (during which he cannot attack or heal).
